Wasted crank bearings

are there enough rod kits, bearings and seals available out there for rebuilding personal cranks that aren't trashed beyond repair?

You can get the 4 main bearings from Yambits for about $100 a set plus shipping and tarriff. OEM is double that. The rod kits are about $100 each. No problem getting that stuff.

thanks, good to know Given that, it kinda makes the idea of commissioning someone like Vito's to build a minimum order of 500 with huge upfront cost less appealing.

I wonder if these guys would ever make a run of RD400 if contacted? They do a LOT of 250/350 new cranks. I even bought 2 of them and they look really well made- but haven't installed yet to rate them.

its cheaper to rebuild a 350 crank as well, if you can do it (i can) but honestly,  not worth my time to save the 150 bucks, and no dealing w those stupid pressed in weights

Just thinking out loud but has anyone looked at a +10mm Banshee crank as a place to start.  That's a 64mm stroke but I assume that they use the smaller diameter banshee/350 sized crank wheels and 115mm rods, so it would need 350 cases and a 1mm lift plate and a little crankcase shaving to squeeze the crank in, but it has to be an option.

You could always weld up the cases to take a 68mm CPI top end but that's getting into silly money. I also don't know if there's enough metal in the cases to be trenched for that long pf a stroke.

to that point.. vitos could do tthe same w the 350 crank, just use offset rod pins you'd gsin some crankcase volume, hut it would be negligible

Just out of curiosity, have you weighed the Vito's crank vs an oem RD crank? It must obviously be lighter, but by how much?

Chuck did a topic about rod bearings and using Suzuki RM125 small end bearings a while back. Economy Cycle had some at one point I think.

 Someone just needs to go to China with a 400 crank and commission a lot of them. A factory drawing set would be helpful too. They are surprisingly accommodating and business is down. The unit price is lower with economy of scale.

 The question is, how many would people buy one right away to recoup the investment? Setup costs are much lower than you'd expect and they have low profit expectations compared to the West. You really have to go over there to get the best deal. But then they'll never stop calling you...

this is why vitos needs to do it. they already have the factory contacts and purchasing, and can deal w quality control with an already in place system. w out that, its anybodys guess.

fwiw,  i have had machines being commissioned all month here from China.  its a.. joy. :/
