Lightly scuff through the coating at the front and the back of the piston skirt. That is where you can measure your piston for clearance. The coating is sacrificial and should not factor into your final clearance measurement.

Front brake on my AHRMA F250 Yamaha.  TZ500 front disc (thinner and MUCH lighter than an RD or XS disc) on XS650 carrier.  Grimeca caliper with homemade caliper hanger.  Forks are RD350, but swapped sides to better route the brake line and move caliper to back of fork (aesthetic benefit only).  RD350 hub, so everything is Yamaha and bolts right up without having to figure out any spacers or adapters.

General Chatter / Looking for dual-sport riders
March 30, 2022, 10:13:58 AM
Any dual sport riders in the South East interested in doing the Smokey Mountain 500 loop the first full week of June this year?  3-4 days off road and camping.

General Chatter / Re: Yamaha Logo

Yamaha also partnered with and sold Asahi tennis shoes in the '80s (maybe longer).  The Yamaha name and tuning fork logo was on the boxes.  Probably because Yamaha was also in the tennis racquet business.  But, all the Japanese motorcycle mechanics wore Asahi shoes in the pits. First time I saw a pair, they were on Eddie Lawson's feet.

General Chatter / Re: RD400 - changing tires
February 11, 2022, 12:11:21 PM
With good tires, a properly cleaned and prepared rim, and proper tire lube, I've had them pop on with as little as 12 psi.  I always have to add air after the beads pop. I've never had to overfill them and then bleed air off to get to the pressure I was planning on running.  For old grodie dirtbike rims, I use a soft wire wheel chucked up in a drill and clean the tire seating area of the rim.

I have a Baja No Pinch.  Very cool.  Using it this weekend to change (and charge for) a tube on a vintage BMW. But to be honest, never pinched a tube since switching to these   https://www.motionpro.com/product/08-0409

General Chatter / Re: What switch is this?
February 09, 2022, 10:38:21 PM
Looks very add-on aftermarket to me.  Easiest thing to do is pull the headlight and see what color wires go to it.  DS7/R5 wiring is super minimal and easy.

On the wiring diagram, the "Right Switch" is mislabeled.  It should be Left Switch.  DS7/R5 don't have a Right Switch.

Turning Wrenches / Re: Rz350 spec II pipes
January 22, 2022, 05:41:55 AM
When they point outward like that it usually means they are mounted on the wrong side. Left on Right and vice versa.  Don't use stickers as a mounting reference since the cans are removeable and my have been put on the opposite pipe by mistake after a re-pack.  :twocents:

Turning Wrenches / Re: What's the answer?

The Left or Right shifting was an  option for a couple of reasons and mostly available on 'race' inspired models.  All early Yamaha TZs came with a double ended shift shaft installed (a nifty rubber boot covered the right side splined end).  This was so European racers could shift on the right, since early British and European bikes had Right side shift, and that is what they were used to.  Sheene and Agostini (and many others) used Right side shift in their GP careers.
Yamaha DT (and other off road singles) engines also have the option of Right side shift.  This is because so many were used for flat track racing, and those bikes all shift on the Right side, for obvious reasons. Any why some factory heads have Two 'spark plug' holes.  The extra hole was never meant to carry a spare plug, as many think.  It is to install a compression release for flat track racing.  It was unique sound to hear a bunch of two-stroke singles heading into the first turn of a flat track race and everyone hitting the compression release...

My problem isn't the paint scheme; it's with a grown man, especially KR, wearing Crocs!

I also have some DS7/R5 Clutch side covers which have the 'boss' for the optional Right side shift.  Some are not drilled out or machined for the seal, and some are machined but have a solid rubber seal in place (same seal as the shift fork rods use on the left side).  Both are original from the factory that way.

Some DS7 & R5 & earlyTZ engine side covers have the recessed area some don't.  Not sure of the years with either.  I have some of each.  It is not for a rubber seal.  It was for a felt 'washer' dust seal.  Just like the on in the rear arm for the drum brake.

Felt washer is shown with the shift mechanism.

US sites list the part, but CMSL shows pictures of the individual parts.

Race Discussions / Re: MotoGP - going to "green" fuel
December 16, 2021, 10:46:12 AM
As long as there is 'fuel' involved, it should evolve into something we will enjoy.  I have had a MotoGP Videp Pass for as long as they have existed, but I have never watched a MotoE, qualifying, race, and whatever else they do.  Battery powered electric motorcycles are boring and pretty useless to anyone who likes to go for an actual ride: street or dirt.  I like 'fuel cell' electrics.  Not sure why they have not taken off.  Good technology since the '60s.  Probably infrastructure issues (maybe manipulated or not  :umm:)
Remember; the Stone Age didn't end because they ran out of stones.  And the Fossil Fuel age will not end because we run out of fossil fuels.
