I just tig weld dabs of weld on top of the tap to make a post, then weld a nut to it.

Sometimes it's easier to weld a washer onto the broken tap first and then weld the nut onto the washer.  You don't have to build up dabs as high or reach down into the nut.

You can also use a flat piece of steel instead of the washer with the appropriate size hole.  This lets use a larger piece of metal with a hole the size for the tap and you can get a bigger nut on it if need be.

you can just mig a blob of wire on from the gun, thats usually enough to grab especially with an m4 or 5.

Yes that works good if the base metal is aluminum, gets a little tricky with a tap that small and the mig gun when it's steel.
