Just curious what color the rear fender is on a stock 79 RD400 Daytona.

Is it a satin black or a black semi gloss?

I think gloss black is too shiny.

Thanks....

Definitely not gloss.
From the Yamaha parts book:
   RD400F
1A0-21610-11-98  FENDER, REAR    Remarks: LOW GLOSS BLK
Same finish as front & rear wheel, handlebar clamps, triple, and handlebar switch assemblies
Yamaha color code: 0098  LGB  LOW GLOSS BLACK

I think satin is going to be your best bet (unless you want to spring for the high-dollar Color-Rite matched product). Personally, I'd rather pay $7 for a can than $40 and be close enough.  :twocents:

Thanks for the reply Russ - I did a google search on "Low Gloss Black " and found this from Autozone which maybe better than going with a can of Satin.

I just went through this myself after finding a clean daytona rear fender. I debated powder coating vs rattle can and decided on trying spray paint first.

First i used VHT brake caliper paint (Black Satin - PN SP739). I thought the color/sheen was about right. I let it sit for a couple months before I touched it. Discovered that it scuffs far too easily just from handling. This was not going to work for me.

Next I used  VHT Epoxy paint (Black Satin PN SP652) . I had used this before on other things and was really happy with the durable finish I got. The epoxy sheen is slightly more glossy than the caliper satin but still looks good on my bike. . Its much more durable so Im happy with it. You can always do some comparison test samples before spraying the fender.

Thanks for sharing the info King 2

for what it's worth and to hopefully save someone a trip  - I went into Autozone today to buy a can of the low gloss black paint and on the label it actually says "Flat Black"  ???

I has hoping that it may have been a close match to the Factory Yamaha low gloss black paint but obviously Flat Black is not going to work for the fender so I opted for the Black Satin.

Thanks again...........
