I have been recently contacted by doug johnson owner of Moto Carrera. He offered me his pipe stampings and all on hand materials for a reasonable price. I have excepted his offer and we are currently finalizing the deal.
Dough went through surgery roughly 12 weeks ago and is still healing. He doesn't have the real energy to go about the business of building pipes and managing what's happening. He is ok though for those who are wondering and I plan to visit him in roughly a month.
Nothing will tie the pipes and Moto Carrera together anymore and I will be the sole owner of the design. With thi I will update features about the pipes that need addressed.
One of the things that always seems to be an issue is the exhaust manifold. Even buying high end jl pipes you get a crappy cheesy manifold. The design will be changed to have a thicker flange for strength and no spacers or washers and sealed by an o ring with machined tolerances for a quality fit. Also the silencer will be completely re designed. It will be able to be un bolted from the main pipe and sealed by an o ring in this connection point. From there they will welded on the bottom and the end cap bolted on for easy re packing and no more rivets.
On top of all of this I plan on doing all fabrication in house myself for quality reasons for a professional fit and quality controll.
I checked last time these were listed for sale on economycycle and it was $699 plus shipping. I have a target of $599 plus shipping per set. I will post updates after I get the raw materials that have already been made and start with the updates.
Thank you Garrett
Hi Garrett,
Nice to hear you will be keeping the Motocarrera pipes in production. I hope you will also continue with the Motocarrera decals for the pipes.
I also saw your post about modifying DG Heads. I have a set for RD400 and hope to have that mod done in the future. That is, after I get one of my RD400's put together and running.
Outstanding News Garrett
Good to hear Garrett!
Sounds like your on the right track to updating the needed design changes...
Chuck
We definitely need a pipe with a price point sitting between the DG and the JL. If the quality and improvements are good I think it would winner.
Good to hear these will continue.
+1 if you built a side stand to work with the pipes
And if there's any way to produce one for RD350s that allows retention of the centerstand, I'll definitely take one.

That usually is not possible when using dies. Stamping dies are very expensive to make on the front side, then are cheaper to mass produce to keep cost down.
Fukui is the only new ones I know of, and don't see the 350 model?

Sounds like some great upgrades that would make them more desireable. The price point would be very atractive too. :science:
I think that's a great price point. The fact that they would have better flanges would be the icing on the cake.
I'd buy a set right now if they were available !
I think I'll just look for a used set of something for now until they are available..
I'll keep my eyes out when you get into finished production.
I saw your FB post on this matter. Excited to hear about the WIP.
Thank you. Yes I did go and get all the raw materials this past Monday. Know that I have them I'm able to get a better idea to finalize my upgrades to my manifold design and to the silencers. I'm excited to start the process.
Garrett
Your prototype spigots look great. Are you going round or oval with the silencers?
They will be a round silencer and will come in 2 lengths. I figure an option would be a great thing to to have.

Nice!
What kind of powerband is to be expected on a non-ported 350? Power dropping off before any major mayhem occurs?

I ran these pipes on a stock ported 350 with cut heads and 30mmcarbs and had A solid 5500-9500 power band.

So I got my quote back and I was pretty blown away at cost. It was going to be $385 per set in machined parts. That's a total of 10 machined pieces per set of pipes. I have decided to use the burned flanges and a piece of 1-1/2 od tubing. The pieces welded on to the pipe will still be machined and seal with o rings. The tubing is surprisingly round and with work fine as well as be substantially cheaper. I believe it will still tied a high quality pipe at an affordable cost. Still shooting for 599-649 range.
Garrett
Looks good!
However, I do wonder if the machining cost would be lower if the o-ring grooves were on the spigot, and the piece welded to the pipe was just a piece of larger tubing, or a straight bushing?
Just seems easier to cut grooves on OD, rather than ID.
:twocents:
I really like that TZ style design with twin O rings but it's an expensive way to do things unless you are set up with a CNC lathe.
Single external O ring suggested by Dvsrd might reduce cost a bit. Check out the Jim Lomas design for a simple version of single external O ring.
On my RD drag race pipe I was able to use some chopped down TZ "headers, but for production, costs need to be low.
Actually the piece with the o ring grooves is not bad price wise even with a lower quantity of 20.
Yes I see how loomas does it but that sealing actually sucks. Owned a few sets and his flanges suck. I wanted to do better than that. I'll get some more picture up tomorrow for what I came up with.
Garrett
Tyga silencers are only $50 each retail.
They'd probably cut you a bulk/wholesale deal and sell em to you without the nameplate if you ask nice 🤷🏻♂️
Having more of a dirt background, I'd say check out how pro circuitdoes there flanges. I never had issues with the head pipe sealing until I met my first RD. 😂

Super stoked!!!
Favorite pipes, next down would be Factory Pipe Products.
Keep up the good work, and do what you feel is best.
small update. I have the flanges done. Unable to do the aluminum due to price but have done nicely lasered ones now out of 3/8 mild steel.
But right now I'm in the process of moving do it's going to take time. This will be my biggest priority once moved.
Garrett
A small update. I have since moved and had baby girl number 2! New place is turning out to be awesome! I'm in process to get my sub panel in the garage for power for the tig welder. Spigot pieces are at the machine shop to be machined hopefully next week and enough to build 15 sets of pipes. I also just got some silencers in for mock up and silencer flanges. It took 4 days to get parts from japan. Is fedex. I'm still on the fence for price though. So I'm thinking right around $650-675 with silencers plus shipping.
Pics to come. But the ball is definitely rolling now.
Garrett
That's awesome, keep updating! :righteous:
Congratulations on your new daughter, Garrett.

Can we call you old 2 smoker guy yet?
Congrats Garrett!
(let me know how I can help as you still have some shop $$ credit on file)
Chuck
Congratulations on the new baby
Looking forward to seeing the pipes!!
Thanks for all the words guys!! I'm hoping life slows down a bit. I have almost spent the last 5 years and every dime I had fixing my last house always fitting big things with it. New house is much newer and I pray way less maintenance for more family time and shop time. I'll keep you guys in the loop.
Garrett
Good luck man! As a guy in a similar spot as you, I appreciate your desire for more shop and family time.
All the best, Health, Family, Work.
Cheers, 50gary
Sub panel now has power and now welder has power!
Still trying to get things straightened out though and finish up existing engine work. So hopefully I'm welding next week.
Garrett
Just had my dad pick up parts from the machine shop!! Should have them in my hands by Monday or Tuesday!

Are the pipes and silencers stainless steel or mild steel?
Pipes are mild steel and silencers are aluminum.

First I've heard of this look great, hope 400 set is planned.
Yup 400 350 250 r5. Or mix and match. I have everything for any combo including Daytona.

That is beautiful work. :patriot: :patriot:
Nice job. I just noticed this thread. Great to see the millenniums live on. I have a set and it sounds like you've addressed the weaknesses (poor seal at the flange, rivited canister. Any plans for a stainless option?
Looking good, I assume the piece with the silicon o-ring is welded to the end of the pipe. I did something similar with the DG pipe fitted to my YZ465H when I bought it as I hated how bad the fit was - too long & poor fit over the cast in spigot
These are beautiful.
It is interesting how my 100cc Go Kart engines use pipes that are bigger in diameter and volume than the tuned pipes for my RZ350. .

All depends on what the pipes are made to do.
Look at the size on this Drag Banshee.
Damn, I'd like to hear that thing eat. From the saddle, preferably!
Are the side exit pipes available as well??
Thank you!

I have had numerous people ask about this. I have decided not to make them. Reason being is every picture you see off them they hang out the right side of the bike probably 5 inches. I've worked in 2 bike in the past that had them and the other thing you don't see is the left pipe was completely smashed in to get it to exit out the right side as well. Not worth it guys. Unless you only turn left.

So good, just so good. Hats off to Garrett and congrats to the new owners of his fine pipes
I just wanted to give Garrett a long overdue shout out and thank you. :whoop:
He rebuilt my 85 rz engine and is currently rebuilding my 84. The 85 engine came back looking like new. I actually had it in the middle of the dining table for our Christmas dinner center piece. Well, just to the side. Yes, my wife is pretty understanding.
Still working on getting the jetting right. Garrett is also giving me advice on that.
Thank you Garrett for your quality work.
