Turning Wrenches / Re: Damaged DG Perf 4 Heads

Just an FYI, I sent Scott a text rather than calling him as I really didn't want to bother him if he's retired.  I have not heard back.

Turning Wrenches / Damaged DG Perf 4 Heads
October 02, 2022, 10:42:26 AM
I bought a set of DG heads a while back and want to use them.  Both domes have piston and ring shrapnel damage.  I read a post some time ago about SCR saving a set of heads like this.  Does he still do this type of work?

If my memory is correct that piece is screwed to the back of the lock and covers the hole the latch goes into so that the latch will be spring loaded when closed.  When you unlock it, the latch is pushed out.

Probably just frustrated when he wrote the listing.

If it hasn't moved at all, I think the rust just has nowhere to go and the heating isn't expanding the holes enough to slide by the rust.  If the penetrant you're using has not dribbled out between the case and the cylinder base the rust is in there pretty solid.  I'd take the engine apart so all that's left is the top half of the case and the stuck cylinder.  The bottom of the cylinder liner is exposed and you can use an aluminum block and hammer on it directly, if carefully.  Then I'd flip it upside down and clean the holes out with brake clean to get the penetrant out, flip it back over and fill them up with evaporust.  Leave it for a day, pour it out and see if anything comes out.  If so, repeat the process.

I recently took an R5 engine apart and the cylinders did not want to come off.  They did move a little and I was able to work them up and down so the rust fell out of the bottom of the holes until they came off.  I was surprised how much rust there was.

A couple of weeks of some pain. But everybody's going to react differently.  When I had mine years ago, the doc did not have me numb enough and when he cut one of the tubes, I about hit the ceiling. He says, oh you felt that?

Skat is a brand.  The dust deputy is a small cyclone.

Thanks for the tips!  I have a Skat cabinet with a dust deputy between it and a Skat dust collector.  The collector exhaust vents directly outside so my exposure is pretty limited.

Thanks for all the responses.  I picked up some 80 grit glass beads at my local HF to try out.

General Chatter / What Blast Media?
August 07, 2022, 11:07:59 AM
I finally got my blast cabinet running and put what I thought was walnut shells in it. Thus was new media I got from the PO of the cabinet.  I blasted a rd350 side cover as a test and the finish is way rougher than I wanted. It's making me think that the media was not walnut, though I did have the pressure at 90 psi.  I'm looking for smoother finish that I can leave as a final finish on engine case halves. Any suggestions?  If I had the coin, I'd buy a vapor blast setup but that's not in the cards.

Got a set of originals years ago but have not used them yet.  I thought I might put them on a 350 with a set of Denco's I have for an old school look.
