Hi guys,
I drive from Ottawa to a town exactly 100 km's from me and it takes 8.5 liters. That leaves 2.5 liters before reserve. That leaves 29.5 km's in the tank for a total of nearly 130km's per tank in the hwy..
I'm almost 100% sure that driving around town I can get to 160km's easily.
Is it possible that HWY driving at a steady 5500 rpm (100kmph) can suck more gas than bombing around town and talking it easy?

5500 rpm seems a bit high at 100 km/h , especially if it is an INDICATED 100 km/h on a stock Speedo. I prefer around 5000 rpm at an actual 100 km/h on my 350. Which gives 170 at the 8500 rpm redline.
thats pretty normal on stock rd. ~5500 @ 65 indicated.
gearing helps as said.
Yup, its 100kmh as per google maps which is very accurate for me as I see in my truck.
Ill look into dropping the rpm by 500 next summer. From the get go I felt the bike could benefit from higher gearing. I find it too revvy on the hwy.. like I wished it had another gear.
If you're #1 goal is fuel mileage you're on the wrong type of motorcycle. :twocents:
Add some engine mods and watch the mpg plummet. Worth it though

Exactly! :taz: Who cares about fuel consumption?
I get a solid 35 mpg on my 350 :whoop: About the same as my 1100cc FI bike.
lol ya wrong bike for mpg :nana:
but its not be mpg im worried about trying to improve.. Ive just never seen a machine get worse millage on the hwy compared to around town. just couldn't believe my eyes
My RD400s average 8-10 L/100km. (30-24mpg)

It's a 2 stroke. Nature of the beast.
Believe it or not... Proven, My STG 2 RD400's builds get close to 38 miles per gallon on the highway at 65-70 mph. (with a few hit it hard race your buddy and passing cars)
16-39 gearing, YZ85-VF reeds, TM34's on Uni-Pods, Vape CDI
Chuck
I've found two strokes to always be heavy on the juice. My RD400 is about 10/L per 100kms and my Bridgestone 350 is up around 12L per 100km!
Hardy
yeah, it all depends where in the rpm you are at hwy cruising and how well its tuned.
believe it or not, i get consistent 33-35 on the grom with a 250 quad motor, which is way better than i expected. my lc gets somewhere in the high 30's as well. strong ignition helps a bunch here as well.
Agreed. I found once I fitted chambers (home made) and dialed
In, fuel economy became better. I put it down to making more power or the engine being more efficient.
Either how, fuel economy is not for me, I only ride on vintage rallies or the odd back road blast.
