General Chatter / Re: Snowmobile/ Sled 2 strokes

skiDoo makes a 2T sled EFI and SUPER CHARGED... it's actually a dud, made for mountains and it is tuned to keep the same power output, no matter the altitude.... so the charger does nothing at sea level
BUT all the parts are there....
And it passes California clean air... in stock tune.

They did that to the first TR3s and TZs too

... I TOO find the RDs to be remarkable bikes... but BEST????
There was a LOT of really cool bikes in that decade
The Imola, Laverda SF/SFC, KZ/GS1000,Goldwing, a whole SLEW of dirt bikes, and a TZ was more influential bike than a RD... the TR3 won the Daytona in '72, and was the "prototype" for the RD
And the RD400 IS objectively better, all round, than a 350 (at least before the RD-LC)

Some one should define "best"
"Best" is false economy. "BEST" is subjective

Turning Wrenches / Re: wrist pin press

Something has to locate/center the piston on the pin.
On these Yamahas, as most two strokes; the rod is located by thrust washers on the crank, and the rod "floats" on the pin.
On a four stroke you can locate the rod with a press fit pin and let the big end "float" on the crank.

No one noticed I wrote y'all a poem....

Warm the piston
Cool the pin
A bit of oil
It slips right in

I put grease on then, in the hope they come apart cleaner

You can use 110mm rods
or a 5mm base gasket from Cometic... or 4mm and take the port change

Turning Wrenches / Re: Aluminum swing arm for RD400F

Are the DG RD350 swingers longer than stock? It would make sense.
The DG swinger I have was put together using American imperial dimensioned stock, which makes the ID of the cross tube an imperial dimension... that fits on a metric dimensioned axle, so there is no bearing that fits.
I counterbored the tube and installed metric roller bearings

Before you get TOO excited, no swingarm will fit all those bikes. The Rd400s had that dumb collar thingme that goes through the brake arm, so the slot for the axle is wider on one side.
The Daytona's were different again.
But it does look a lot like the DG swinger I got... I understand there was more than one version of DG swingarms

If you plan on using RZ/Banshee ignition, you gotta know that the RD400's keyway is 90 degrees off the RZ.

I raced RDs with 3J7 cranks for 20 years and never broke one.
Allows you to run RZ/Banshee ignitions too

That's not going to do much for a Yamaha twin crank. Use two V blocks under the center bearings,  do one end, then install and align the other.
... but different cranks use different fixtures. The fixture shown would work well for a single, singles I usually mount a bearing in a collet and hang the crank vertically in the mill... that way I can put several indicators on it at once. I want the crank rotating in a bearing, not dead centers like in the fixture shown
