Turning Wrenches / R5 Fork Oil…
April 10, 2022, 12:52:55 PM
Doing spring maintenance.   I drained my forks to replace the oil.

The "book" says 10w/30.  I have 10 weight fork oil on the shelf.

It's an R5 without any fork mods.  The springs are likely 50 years old.  Street ridden.

Any consensus or opinion which way to go?

Ten years on from losing my Griso to Sandy, I have gotten a new Guzzi.

It's a 22 V7 Special.  New this year is the (detuned) V85 850 in this frame...

I'll bring it home next week when the weather changes....

Turning Wrenches / Loose Can on Milleniums…
January 21, 2022, 01:51:37 PM
Time for winter maintenance.  One to-do is fix the loose can on one of my MC Milleniums.  The pipes are from Dougs last run, purchased new from him in 2016.

The can is riveted to the pipe via a flange,  but the flange that it's riveted to is 'loose'.  I'm able to rotate the can a few degrees back and forth.  An attempted JB Weld 'fix' lasted about five minutes on the road.

I checked with Garret for his opinion but as they aren't his version, he can't say what the fix is but suggested I drill out the rivets and take the can off.

It looks like the flange  that  the can is riveted to is letting go, but I really can't tell how THAT (see arrow in pic) part attaches to the pipe itself.   Is it welded?

Events / Deals Gap 2022 Check-In
January 14, 2022, 10:33:18 AM
I have the green light to go to the Gap in May.  I (we) need to book very very soon, places are selling out.

So, who is committed, who is thinking about it.  More importantly where are you staying?  It would be great to know where people are staying and create our own vibe.

Personally I like a cabin spot at one of these MC friendly places.  It looks like places are generally between 80-150 a night.  Again, if there are already some 'friendlies' booked, post where you'll be.  What I've seen so far is:

Robbinsville:
Iron Horse
Dragon Rest Cabins

Bryson:
Nathalie Village

Waynesville:
Oak Park Inn

General Chatter / Pass the Torch…
October 17, 2021, 12:14:23 PM
My 3 year old granddaughter was with me all week.  She had a new interest in peeking under the bike covers and saying she wanted to ride the motorcycles.

I started the 200 first, and she really enjoyed a short ride.   The R5 scared the pants off her at first, but later she decided it was ok to hear again, which led to a ride on it too...

Spotted on Ebay, not sure if it's what it's being called - RD350 aluminum swinger?

Turning Wrenches / Low Speed Surging…
September 07, 2021, 08:54:09 AM
R5 runs great overall.   For some time I've meant to catch this one issue on video but I've never gotten around to it.

At low speed, (little/no throttle) or while slowing down on local type roads the bike has a very distinct surge, like a wha-wha-wha-wha with some appropriate jerking.  It smooths out with a little throttle.

I assume this is too small/large of a pilot jet?

I rebuilt with 100% new Mikuni brass last winter and my invoice shows 35 pilots now.  The mains are nicely dialed in via chops.

Thoughts?

Turning Wrenches / Uni Filters: Cautionary Tale…
July 08, 2021, 09:25:21 AM
After going through the RD200 I knew I needed a new set of Uni Filters since I had found a deteriorating foam in the easily accessible right side box.

Yesterday I went in to change them both.  In the 7 years I've had this bike I never looked in the left side box, since it is not easily accessible.  Getting to the left box requires dropping the oil tank.  Not a big deal, just never did it.  Shame on me.

Check out what I found in the left box.  Complete mess of oil, goo, and a former filter.  An hour or so to clean out the box with alcohol soaked rags.  I'm good to go now and magically I feel like the bike is running better!

Show Off / RD200...
June 22, 2021, 04:49:04 PM
I recently noticed that the shed my 200 lives in was smelling like mouse piss.  I got a chance yesterday to clean the shed out, relocate a mommy mouse and babies, bleach then power wash the inside of the shed.

Meanwhile I had moved the 200 into the garage and today I got degrease, deep clean, and wax it which was long overdue since it was not cleaned and covered before it went into that shed.

Results were good.  This is a very original bike - other than the fork gators it's pretty untouched.  I never attempted to polish any of the clear coat which is fairly well gone.  Polish is saved for the R5.  It runs really well and it felt good to give it the attention it deserved.

Trivia:  76 is the only year 200 with a front disk brake.  According to SocCal250's Production Numbers doc it's also the lowest production model of all US RD models over the years.  Serial number is 877 of 2000, I've only ever run across 2 others, both online...

Here it is camping at a race track...

General Chatter / Jawa showed up....
June 22, 2021, 08:43:10 AM
At work the other day and I see this pull in.  The guy has owned it 30 years, it's all original with less than 3000 miles.  He told me he has two 175's at home...

Are they supposed to have some sort of retainer to keep them in place?  Mine seem to fall right out of their seats.  They came with that little clip but my old ones didn't have that so I took the clips off....

Turning Wrenches / RD200 Exhaust Stud Repair...
March 29, 2021, 02:52:27 PM
The previous topics of pipe mounting motivated to repair a broken mounting stud on the 200.  It's been broken since I got the bike years ago, but was always in the back of my mind.

I pulled off the right pipe.  Drilled the stud.  Found an appropriate nut and bolt, then added rubber at the pinch point.  All done.

Looks pretty darn original.  At the current bid, prices are climbing....Too bad I built a hot rod instead of a resto.

I do see that the front brake cable is improperly routed, lol.

Turning Wrenches / VM28 Choke....
February 24, 2021, 04:13:21 PM
Is there *always* a spring inside the choke plunger assembly?  I seem to be missing it on reassembly, and don't recall if it was or wasn't there when I took them apart.  The lever works properly, lifting/holding/lowering the plunger.  The exploded view shows a spring, but there are so many VM variants....

Turning Wrenches / R5 VM28 Float Height...
February 24, 2021, 09:24:02 AM
Going to reassemble my carbs today.  There is no reference in the R5 manual for float height.  I did find "15-17mm" in the VM tuning manual.  Is that correct for the R5?
