kick lever not coming back up

been noticing when I kick the bike the lever will only return half way.  I have to help it along with either my foot or my hand. I removed the side cover and didn't see anything suspect. Am I missing a small detail here? Is the kick lever gear timed?

Did you open up your gearbox recently?

... make sure the very thin washer that goes behind cover on the kickstart shaft is in place.

ding ding ding, we have a winner. I pulled the side cover off as I was going to repaint it anyway. I spotted the missing washer and figured this was the cause.  thanks
