This cover came with a project bike and I'm wondering how critical the flatness of this surface is. It's where the kickshaft comes through and the washer over the spring retainer clip rests.
Every day above ground is a good one.

This is a different cover. I'm no welder but am pretty sure the heat from a weld will ruin the seal (oil pump test cover if not useable otherwise) and maybe warp stuff.  Am I a fool to consider a chemical repair? Something like jb weld or epoxy come to mind. The clearance to the pump is tight, but I definitely don't consider jb weld inside the cover to be a good idea. It doesn't leak, yet.  What say ye?

welding it will be fine but you would need to remove the seal then replace it with a  new one. however, just clean it a lot and pack the crack with case sealant.  as far as the kickstart boss, just file it where it feels smooth, it will be fine.

I would guess that it is OK as it is.  Effectively it's a combo of bush (support) and end float control.

If the kickstarter shaft has too much side end play, put a shim on the shaft and if not, just use it as it is.
