Title: Like stray cats i tell ya. 72 DS7
Post by: m in sc on December 21, 2021, 11:32:00 PM
Heard about this one yesterday from a local group, contacted seller, Just had a kid had to let go. Paid asking price. Never owned a DS7 before, at least a running one.

this was the 1st fire up, less than an hour after bringing home. swapped in the stock needles after throwing out the yl1 k&l ones, and stuffed a battery in it. everything works and charging.

Anyone on here recognize this bike? was out of ohio originally.

compression was checked dead cold with 'dry' cyls (i did not pre oil them). same left to right.

I got lucky on this one. More to follow. (crank seals etc to come)

The bike is pretty clean, looks like it was stored in a good place.

Merry Christmas to you!

Does this one have a name yet? Midas?
Title: Re: Like stray cats i tell ya. 72 DS7
Post by: m in sc on December 22, 2021, 04:56:39 PM
no name. that usually only comes in time if it happens but i don't 'name' my bikes to name them, i always found that stupid unless it was earned out of a situation. ie: the 72 r5 is the '72 r5'. whereas Angie calls the white lc hybrid the 'white bike of death' as shes sure it tries to kill me. (its also the only bikes ive ever had a wreck on, much less 2x). Th elast tiem i laid it down like 4 years ago, my phone dialed her when i was sliding so she heard it.  :dawg:

Always amazes me that there are 50 year old bikes around with such low mileage. How do people just let bike sit year after year without riding them.
Cool buy though.

shes seen this process a few times. lol. thats her int he video telling me 'you need to order tires from chuck now' (local mc shop owner) after it fired off. lol.

Im not sure i need anything i don't already have. the front rim chrome is toast, and its painted but 'ok'.   the rest is pretty good. the oil injection pump is on there but disconnected  :whatever: , hopefully it tests ok. if not will be rebuilt and used.

Bike is originally from ohio so, who knows.

The new tires you'll need are probably cheaper than the first vet bill. My last stray arrival was more than $600 before I let it out of the garage.

I'm sure the new owner is happy I sprung for that. The new cat did not play nice with the incumbent feline so it was passed along. The similarities are rather funny. I'm gonna use the stray cat analogy to my advantage... I have a $600 credit I figure.

Are you keeping it for the collection?

its very similar thats for sure. and yes, much cheaper. lol.

I'll plan on keeping it for now I guess, depends, i haven't even ridden it yet. like the day before i was talking about paring down selling 2 of mine, the red concours and the 72 R5. then this came up.

But it has the 'correct' mirror on it for the period, that's going on barney. considering the cosmetic stuff is all 'rider quality', painted chrome etc might be a good one to hang onto to mess around with.  I also told angie i could lower it a bit if she want so to try to ride it when shes not using her supercub.  Dunno. I'll dig into it some tonight. I also need ot get the cr motor rebuilt for the kawi. decisions decisions.

Stray cats. Yes I can attest that Mark is a stray cat whisperer...
They actually listen to him and follow commands. Issac if I recall the name correctly used to sleep with me whenever I showed up for a visit.

back on topic.. test ride yesterday went well. everything working, oil injection re-installed and working. def need to reset and tune but it's pretty good . def need tires, 50 year old Yokohama are not inspiring. I didn't leave neighborhood though.

Hell yeah!
Title: crank seal
Post by: m in sc on January 01, 2022, 08:41:24 AM
for preventative, i went ahead and planned on replacing the LH seal regardless. when i pulled the alternator rotor off, you could see there was oil seeping out of the lip already very slight. so, I yanked the seal out and took these close up pics. you can still see the oil on the lower part of the cup.. that's from the motor . keep in mind, this bike ran just fine but this was a timebomb waiting to go off.

also, i included a pic of the ds7/r5 rotor, this shows where the timing marks are on these.

so update, got new tires on this, some IRC period tread tires, its never going to be a ripper but these seem good. needed to replace front rim as the old one looks like it hit a curb, got straightened and welded back. no bueno, so a good used one was procured from ebay and is now on bike.

bought new front and rear shoes from economy just due to age of ones in it, which actually looked new but were for sure original. didn't want to risk having a shoe liner come off... bad bad bad.

dgorms  hooked me up, very graciously  :gentleman:, with a correct 26mm LH carb, so now that i had a matching set, i put them both back to stock, all fresh and cleaned.  also have new airbox joints coming so i can take it back to the land of bone stock tune wise.  yeah, i know but still.  :haw:

since im home all week quarantined from work (fine no issues for me, Angie feeling it a bit but not bad), I have tons of time. Of course, it iced and snowed over the weekend, so until today, wasn't even really keeping the garage door open, and the driveway was a sheet of ice.   but today it hit almost 60 so much better wrenching day. AND more testrides.

last thing i needed to do was replace the clutch. I had a gasket set on hand, and a spare set of new fibers. went ahead and pulled cover off and... there was no old gasket. ffs. somebody had just used orange rtv on it.  :dawg: :bang: but had scraped the gasket away

so, replaced clutch, threw rubber rings out, checked everything in there, all good. replumbed oil pump with new lines and painted sidecover.

took out on testride close to home with uni in a y boot and it ran really good ! new brakes, tires, chain, proper tune and seems like a good one . still going to put airbox in but hopefully thats all the mechanical stuff adressed.

still in under 1k on this bike total.   :metal:

"went ahead and pulled cover off and... there was no old gasket. ffs. somebody had just used orange rtv on it.  :dawg: :bang: but had scraped the gasket away"

Hope you got it ALL off. I hate that crap! Cost me a head and cam on my GL1000 custom. Tiny bit that I had missed got into the flow restrictor for the right head stopping all oil flow. The '72 Triumph T150V that I'm rescuing now even had it on drain plugs. Whhhhyyyyyy???
Title: Re: Like stray cats i tell ya. 72 DS7
Post by: m in sc on January 20, 2022, 08:55:05 AM
thanks. yeah, i got it ALL off. I have seen that stuff wreak havoc as well in oiling systems. I found some in the 390 when i rebuilt it in the car as well, bits of it stuck up on the oil pickup and swathed around the rear main (?) that still leaked. lol.  luckily that got hot tanked and all thats NEW, who knows how long it had been there. always the orange and red. Luckily the era of everybody using the blue stuff seems to be over. that shit was prolific in the late 80s.  :rant-1:

Post by: rodneya on January 20, 2022, 10:28:33 AM
The Katana motor I stripped down had that blue stuff all over the carb inlets and engine covers. The guy must have used a full tube on just the sump.

Post by: pidjones on January 20, 2022, 03:17:23 PM
Blue stuff - Hylomar? the Brits on the Triumph sites talk like they use that like no tomorrow. Even on gaskets. All I usually use with gaskets is silicone grease to keep them from becoming one with the flange. Of course, on joints designed for it I use Hondabond (or Yamabond or whatever equivalent is recommended). Rubber gaskets (not o-rings) that need stuck in place get a little Indian Head (which comes off quick with acetone).

received the rubber bits from Sumo rubber, so the airbox is back in and connected. also got some sidecover tabs, and fork seals & viton gas cap seals.

few pics, carbs rebuilt using the 26mm carb i procured on here, and the stock airbox with a good fliter (its better than it looks in the pics) jetting set back to bone stock.

prior to cleaning it up a bit

also installed a vintage smoke Dyna that i bought from a member on here that tested ok.

the way -i- wire them, is i ran a power wire up the stock harness boot, and used a bullet connector from vintage connections  at the joint boot, then ran it along the stock harness sleeving as well . made a plug in junction between the rear brake switch power  (brown lead) that makes it a plug in w out cutting any wires.  I also replaced the points wires from the stock 4 pin plug to new ones and used bullet connectors under the LH cover. all reversible if need be.  No scotch locks!  :dawg:

fired right up, but need to verify timing and repaint LH cover.

bit of an update.

bikes been running well, so i really hate painted chrome, it just irritates me. so, I had a rear fender from an rd already, but decent front r5/ds7 fenders are hard to find. also, the gauges were rough and soembody had previously opened them so the glass was loose. some guy on the FB ac rd group was parting one, so i bought the fender and gauges pretty cheap. also dug up some stock rear signals i had buried, and a grab rail. lastly, i needed to swap the bars as the honda nighthawk? were bent.

seat should eb ready in a week or so, and then i need ot figure out a paint job. want to go stock but got quoted a ridiculous price, so i'll do it myself.

swapped all this out and took it for a nice ride to Charlotte yesterday, zero issues. def not fast.. lol.. but smooth and a fun ride.

straightened:

painted original gauges & headlight ring replaced (with h4 reflector and led bulb) :

new bars, rd fender and r5 grabrail.

will probably replace tail light mount as well, but not a priority.

definitely not show quality chrome or bike, never will be, but id say im probably 80% done. paint and seat and i'll prob be good since EVERYTHING  has now been serviced.

thanks.

finally got the recovered seat back. new foam and cover, all hand done locally. Ive been riding this pretty regular. over the late winter/spring, been pretty good so far.

this was a spare 72 r5 seat i had (was flat and crunchy), so just gave bill that pan to restore it for the ds7.  the ds7 seat just constantly shed foam bits all over the underside of the bike.

bill left me to do the rail, not hard at all. i had the square washers, used stainless button head allens and nylocks with fender washers on the inside.

also, the stock mirror was getting floppy, so i installed a bar end that looked pretty good on the bike I thought. works well too.

as much as i like the seat, it really points out how badly it needs a good oem paint scheme/job.
