Hello gentlemen,

Timing recommendations for 1979 Yamaha RD400F Daytona?
Yamaha specs 2.4 mm BTDC for a stock bike. I have one with spec II chambers, VM28, and K&N y-boot. Its been recommended 1.9 mm BTDC? What is your modified RD400F at?

My question was about the lower exhaust from the rubber exhaust manifold back to the end. The mounting is the same, its a different design but looks interchangable, I know the cylinder head pipes are completely different, but the lower exhaust part should fit...... was hoping to get input from someone who tried it....

RD400 standard exhaust's do the 400c,d,e, exhaust fit the RD400F?

Hello smokers, My 400F exhaust are crappy looking, I want to keep the center and side stand, will the C,D,E exhaust fit?  I know the front header is different and I have a good one, from the rubber exhaust joint back the mounting points look the same,  it looks the same? The F has brackets but the mounting looks the same??  anyone know?

Turning Wrenches / Re: Yamaha rd400 jetting

Thanks SoCal, already ordered all new jets, even the needles and jet needles, float valves etc, all original Mikuni parts, and not the cheap stuff! Here is a RS250 carb from a project bike I bought on ebay, rest of the bike was like new....

Turning Wrenches / Yamaha rd400 jetting

Gentlemen,
My RD400F is making a lot of progress, from boxes of parts to a fairly complete motorcycle.  The RD400F original carbs are on ebay if anyone is interested. I have decided to use a set of RD400E carbs I found in the boxes, Unbelievable I found every piece! prev owner likes to dis-assemble everything and never put it back together. Will need a bowl gasket set and a new set of float valves. I pulled out all the jets which came out fairly easy, even the pilot jets. There is some corrosion near where the main jet goes on lefty, but I dont think it will be an issue, any opinions? Looking around online the 400CDE jet needle and needle seem to have different values? Mine are 5L-1 and 75P-2, I am guessing they are stock sizes but cant verify that, anyone know? I have stock pipes with a K&N Y-boot, first pass thinking of 27.5 pilot with 145 main.  Looks like I can add a cross over pipe with these manifolds, worth doing?

Greetings smokers!  Been thinking about the exhaust on my RD400F project bike, I would like to try the stock exhaust as I want to keep it as original as possible. But if they are awful like the original carbs then I will find an aftermarket set, any recommendations?? Also I want to keep the center and side stands. Already decided not to use the F carbs, instead use a new set of TBD 28's.

Thanks for that guys. I have heard good things about PWK's but have no experience with them, was hoping not to spend too much time dialing in a different set of carbs. With 28's I already have a good starting point. If I use the 32's do I need to find new carb boots that fit them? I found a bigger  Y boot with a new K&N that fits them, it has an adaptor if I decide to use 28mm

Everyone has convinced me not to use the original 2VO carbs, they are unworthy, so they will be on ebay soon.  I have a new set of VM32 round slides, I dont want to use them as I want stock 400CDE type performance, these will be on ebay soon. Also have a set of corroded 400E oem carbs, that need new bodies as the old ones are badly corroded. So my question to you smokers, should I go with a new set of VM28's or go with TM28 flat slides? Do they take the same jetting? Are the needles, needle jets , pilots, and mains the same? Or do they take a different series of parts?

Chuck, Here is the head, what do you do to it? This one does not look modified, the depth on the edge of the dome is about .03 inches.

Here are my carbs, the 32mm and the originals, the originals gave me a headache after I looked at them. Which should I use?

Hey Chuck,
This is a Florida bike, he had everything modified 10 years ago, then it sat in his garage un-assembled, not sure if you did it though but he mentioned your name, Chuck, what is this hole above the exhaust port, have not seen that before? I found a set of new looking 32mm Mikunis in my treasure chest, is that a good choice? The crank was rebuilt by Falicon in st pete, it looks new. Regards Dave

Yamaha RD400F Daytona original carbs, any good?
Hello Smokers, So far I have used only original carbs in my RD400 and RZ350's and they work well. Just acquired a Daytona project bike, will be getting a set of pipes, originals are MIA, not sure about the oem carbs. I assembled many new out of the crate and did not like the stock bike performance. The previous unrestricted RD400 were better IMHO. So should I use the OEM or find a set of aftermarket. End goal is an original stock bike with chambers, jetting and air filters.

Turning Wrenches / RZ350 puller problem
December 30, 2019, 08:51:24 AM
RZ350 puller problem , starting to tear down my project RZ350. The flywheel puller is supposed to be a 27mm X 1.0 mm pitch left hand thread. The one I have is that but does not seem to fit, maybe 2 threads and it goes no further, I have 2 flywheels and its the same. I seen a 27 x 1.25 mm puller on ebay, does anyone know which is correct, i used this same puller on my RD400 and it fit fine.
