Hi All - Just bought a lightly resto-modded '78 RD400. Spec pipes, aftermarket intake, non-stock handlebars, seat & running lights, but otherwise exactly like the bike I drooled over as a poor college student way back in '78! It's a blast to ride, even though I feel it still needs some carb tuning. Starts on just one or two kicks - idles good - higher RPM power is almost more than I can handle, but there's a noticeable flat spot in the mid-range. Previous owner mentioned he'd been fiddling with different jet settings, and I agree there's more to be done there.
But my question concerns the "choke" lever. Is the engine "choked" when the lever is UP or DOWN? The bike seems to start equally well with the lever in either position. ???

Choke is down. Regular position while running is up.
