Ok as the title says, did a dumb thing, feel a bit silly, I know I'm not the only person to do this, I hope. so drained oil, put new oil in, did it by measuring, not buy checking dipstick. Not all old oil drained, consequently over filled with oil, ran the bike for a while, but not hard at all. Now after riding it leaks oil for  a day or so but not the entire time, only leaks maybe an Oz every time I stop. some of it runs off the kick stand. My question is where is the mostly likely place it will be leaking from, I have had a look but the oil is so clear its hard to detected where its leaking from. Side cover, I did tighten them, also I did change the drain plug to a magnetic drain plug at that time, could that be it ? Then everyone. Cheers Karl

Turning Wrenches / Needle shims Mikuni VM28 73 RD350
October 18, 2023, 09:41:46 AM
Hey, question about Needle shims, I think a shim or 2 for the needle would be beneficial but I know nothing about them and need a bit of education.

Are they measured in MM or in fractions of an inch?.

I will go and measure this my self but does anyone know off hand what the measurement is between clip segments on the needle?

Does anyone know what the sizes are the shims come in.

I had my carbs set on the 2nd clip, it was good but seemed a bit rich, so I changed it to the first clip, definitely better but seems to have a bit of a flat spot or a lean bog in the 1/4 to half throttle so I was thinking of shimming the needle up a bit.

I'm sure this has been done RD400 Engine in a 350 frame, has this been done? I was thinking I'd love rebuilding and RD400 Engine I really think the RD400's were fugly especially the gas tank unless its a 79 or 80, but the 400 engines are nice and I was thinking that would be nice in a 350 frame. so have many people done this, is there any obvious reason why that is a bad idea, is it hard to get the 400 engine in the frame?.

This all the same plug just rolled it over to show differnt sides.

Turning Wrenches / Plug chop vid
October 03, 2023, 09:00:49 PM
I tried to upload a vid but my phone vids are not compatible, so I uploaded it to YouTube click the link to view the vid of the plug chop.  This was at Half throttle for about 2 miles, using a bit of back break from  to keep me in the speed limit and offering a bit of load on the engine. To me it looks pretty good but would not mind others others thoughts that now more than I do. Thanks and enjoy the vid.

Turning Wrenches / Jetting and Needle clip
September 29, 2023, 06:07:18 PM
Just wondering, if anyone has a similar setup as I do and what settings they are using, Explanation for the question.  Ridding the bike today, first time on a 40 mile ride, bike is good but clearly tuning has to be done on  it. So seems good to half throttle, at half throttle kind of seems like its getting too much gas, 3/4 and up oh ya too much gas starts to slow down, then I roll it back it speeds up so Mains are Too big, I'll do plug chops next week but I think its obvious the mains are too big just based on it bogs when I open it up and then picks up speed when I back off on the throttle, at least this is what makes sense to me. So I'm thinking about dropping the needle from position 3 to position 2 to lean out the mid a little bit and then smaller mains.
I'm just wondering what setup others have that may have a similar setup as my self.
setup is as follows

1973 Yamaha RD350
Dave F mod, with the suggested Needle, Needle Jet and slide for the Dave F mod
220 mains
35 pilots, the pilot circuit seems really good, Air screw is 1 turn out.
Vape Ignition
Y-boot K&N filter
JL Pipes

Open to other peoples thoughts.

I know everybody is different so I'm not basing what I end up doing on what others are I'm just wondering.

Since posting this Last night, this morning I found a "2 stroke world Jetting Poll" I have the info I wanted, however if you would still like to respond to this, please do. Cheers.

Turning Wrenches / Intake spacers,
September 24, 2023, 08:03:30 AM
So a question about Intake spacers, how do they impact performance, I'm reading more lower end torque, also if you put the intake spacers in front of the read blocks if that is a good idea or not ? Anyone have experience with this ?

Turning Wrenches / Oil Pump Worm/Ring Gear
September 20, 2023, 10:43:51 AM
Ok another question, Mostly if there are any tricks tips to this and we are talking bout those little wee springs and Little cylinder things those little tiny so and so's in the oil pump.

Any tricks on doing them, I have done them in the past but honestly I was always drunk when I did it and dont really remember, I do know I glued the tabs to the springs and this made it spring and tab as one unit, I'm doing that now but I thought I would post on here incase someone has a good trick to do this. Thanks Karl

Turning Wrenches / Carbs only get Gas when the choke is on
September 17, 2023, 07:49:02 AM
First Sorry everyone for having so many threads, I cant figure out how to delete old threads, if someone can tell me how to delete I can delete all the other questions that have been answered

Anyway 73 RD350 with VM28 400 Carbs, everything from what I can tell is clean and nice, all the jets everything is good took them both apart again and double checked everything but seems like the carbs only get Gas if they are choked, there has to be a simple answer to this, a blocked vent maybe?

I start it, it runs good then gets boggy, turn the choke on starts to run good, turn the choke off continues to run good for a min or 2 or 3 then starts to bog again then turn the choke and so on. I was thinking maybe it was sucking air from the carb boot or reed block but wouldn't start to die as soon as I stopped choking it?

Turning Wrenches / Dave F Mod
September 16, 2023, 09:59:15 AM
So relevant to another thread this came up but its a different topic its only a quick question.
When I bought the bike it already had the Dave F mod done, relative to the other topic the issue of cleaning the air jets came up.
I removed the 2mm air jets out to inspect and clean them.

Question:

I can see the Needle Jet looking in to the modified air jet hole, I cant really find any answer but from what I gather they should not be that deep or are they supposed to be open to the Needle Jet. Sorry for all the threads I  'll delete this one once someone can answer my question lol but I will have more. :-) Cheers everyone.

Took the bike out for a ride, definitely starving for gas, I can start it with the choke on, then take if off, will run say a block or so, then it will start bogging (starving for gas) I flick the choke then it runs good turn the choke off it starts to starving for gas again after a few min. Pulled the carbs apart double checked everything floats are about 21.5 to 22.5, the spec for float height is 23 - or + 2.5
Air screws are 1 1/2 all jets and passage ways are clear and clean.
its like the with the choke on the bowls fill up but once they the choke is off the engine uses the gas in the float bowls and no more gas flows in
Any thoughts?

Maybe some one on here has an idea. New cylinders, Pistons and Rings
1973 Yamaha RD350
Dave F mod
Have not started riding it yet, just in the Heat cycles did 5 heat cycles.

Problem:
Start up is good but after a few min of warming it starts to bog like its not getting enough gas, I put on the choke and seems to run better.
Carbs are Synced, Timing is bang on, Vape ignition.
Carbs are VM28 from a RD400
JL pipes, 220 main, 27.5 pilot, needle 3rd.

Turning Wrenches / RD350 Oil pump seal
September 07, 2023, 12:22:14 PM
anyone have any success or tricks to install seal on a 73 rd350, the seal at the bottom end where the external plastic gear is? I'm not having any luck with this at all.
