That method sounds excellent:)

I'm guessing this is the overflow tube. It's pointed directly to the side of the leak, so I'm figuring that's all it was. I'm just going to ride the damn thing.

Below is a pic of the dipstick. The red fluid on the towel shows where the level is currently on the dipstick (cold).

Well...I thought I was ok. I just checked the bike and there is a long line of trans fluid coming from the left side of the crankcase. It may be the seal under the front sprocket (counter shaft seal). The drip seems to be coming from that area. I hope that's all it is.

I checked the fluid level when the bike was warm and it was perfect. I just checked it cold and it shows that it's over filled (Is that supposed to be the case?). The RD350 owner's manual says to check it warm. I hope I didn't cause a huge problem over something as simple as changing trans fluid. ugh.

I cranked it up and ran it for a bit. Afterwards, the fluid level went to where it was supposed to be. Thanks again!

The dip stick is sitting on top of the threads vs. it being screwed in.

I'll crank it up and check it again after running it. I thoroughly measured out 1500ml using a measuring cup just in case.  I also had two 1000ml bottles and the left over bottle shows just over 500ml.  Thanks again for the reassurance. It's much appreciated

I put 1500ml of fluid in. It's been siting for over an hour now and is still about an inch over where it should be. Ugh.

I just changed out my trans oil for the first time and noticed it was extremely overfilled. I added just under 1500ml of fluid and leaned it from side to side and etc. it's gone down a little but is still well over the mark.

I let it drain for about 2 hours. The bike was level and every now and then I leaned it from side to side and etc to make sure all of the oil  drained out.

Should I start the bike to ensure the fluid fills the case properly or just wait a while for the fluid to settle?

Long story short, the yamaha dealer gave me an AGM battery for free since my old conventional battery was under warranty. The one I got is the same (or very close) height and width as the old battery. The height and width fit perfect in the battery "mount/holder." I couldn't find the right foam, so I  added some bike inner-tubes like one of the guys suggested to make up for the shorter depth.

The battery part number is CTZ7S Fire Power (replaces YTZ7S). 12V 6ah.  If you are interested, I've attached a picture. Thanks again for all the great info!

I finally had time to install it. Hopefully I'll be shredding the streets soon  :metal:

ah.... I see its 4.5 not 4.0 for the sigma you sent over. Does the 4.5 inch width fit into the battery box well?

The stock yuasa dimensions are:

Length: 4 1/16 in.
Width: 3 9/16 in.
Height: 4 1/2 in.

arrg. I typed in the wrong battery part number (12n5.5-3b vs. 12n5.5A-3b) and I'm thinking the motobatt will be too large to fit in my battery box.

Does anyone have part numbers for a powersport battery that will fit? I looked at the sigma tek, but its seems like most are 12v 4ah. I haven't looked at the alarm batteries yet. They look like they are an easy fit, but I really don't know where to start looking on those.

Does anyone see anything wrong with either of these batteries? Is it bad to go a little over on amperage? My conventional battery is 12v 5.5ah.

ugh. I think I was mistaken about the direct fit for that motobatt. It looks like it might be too big.

I also found this one. Although it is 7ah, it says it's a direct replacement for my yuasa battery and that it will fit the RD350.

I found these Motoclassic batteries on Amazon. One is not quite 5Ah, but the size seems compatible. There is also a 6.5ah version, but am not sure if the amperage is going to be too high.

Great! I think I'll try the AGM. The yuasa I have is 12v 5.5ah. I'm guessing the safest bet is to match this exactly.

General Chatter / Maintenance free battery for 73 RD 350

My conventional yuasa (12n5.5a-3b) battery life crapped out recently. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a maintenance free alternative?

Thanks. I just set them in the middle at .022. I have a set of those br8hix plugs but haven't used them yet.
