I am trying to run Tavian Barrels which are Indian HT Spec , exhaust at 31mm , with USA Heads and we are thinking the compression when engine is on is too much to handle for the Points ignition.

I am not able to get hands on a HT Indian spec HT heads which has around 1.5mm squish compared to USA spec heads ..

Have anybody tried thicker head gaskets? like 2 mm thick ?

General Chatter / DG exhausts mount on rd350
March 04, 2023, 02:07:08 AM
Hi ,

One of my friend is keen on using DGs on rd350 , just not sure if the rear mount is same ? I know the center stand needs to be removed , but does the original mount matches the dg one ? Or we need to make a bracket ?

Any pictures will be very helpful

Turning Wrenches / OKO Carbs on RD350 Cafe
December 13, 2022, 07:42:03 AM
HI all ,

Been few years  , I bought these OKO 30mm from treatland.tv and been sitting there ..

I am running my RD350 cafe with DGs , MZB , Mild ported 2mm BTDC and UNI Pods ... woule like to try the OKO carbs .. these are black carbs with yellow choke if that helps ..

SC helped me with starting point but I lost the post I guess in old forum . I want know for Pilot , Mains and Needle profile and needle clip , where can I start ? I have bought the jet and needle kits we well and am really keen on trying these carbs on. : )

and any special tips if anybody has with experience ..

Another challenge is my standard 44mm ? UNIs don't fit in on the 50MM back of these carbs : (( so another project of getting them imported ..

One of the many doubts ,

I have been using UNI pods on my cafe racer bike and every year they dis integrate , the RED layer wears off in few months and then the second stage black foam pod also tears off ..

I dont use my cafe daily and mostly in summer , so she's parked a lot of time , and I don't oil the filters , so that is the reason they go out of shape ?

I had been holding the K&N POD filters for long and heard that they don't work well due to metal plate .... is there anything we can do to make those work ? like adding some extension between carb and filter ?

I don't want to replace UNI Pods every year : (

Turning Wrenches / Exhaust Leaking from Crown Nut
August 05, 2022, 03:02:54 AM
Experts ,

This has been a life long pain for me and may be many others , the exhausts leak from Crown Nut  sounding the bike fluttering ...

DO we have any specific sequence on installing the joint ?

I need to loosen both Silencer mount bolts and also exhaust studs to put the crown nut easy way as the exhaust loses the alignment when stiff
And once i out everything back and tighten the bolts 1 Exhaust Stud Nuts 2 Silencer mounts Front and Rear( Hanger ) the Leak starts  , its a hit and miss scenario so just curious its a pain in USA models also or its just here ?

We use the Flat gasket which is wrapped around the pend pipe and over which the crown nut goes .. later RX models ..What is the ultimate packing to be used or whats being used in USA ?

Hi all ,

Just wanted to check what is the best thing to do when it comes in to replacing old condenser.
Wien pitting is increasing in points surface , due to arching ..
Will the original NOS stock ..say 20 30 years old will perform better over new ones of same value ?

Or its good practice to use new ones which are recently manufactured?

Turning Wrenches / Timing Drift
March 23, 2022, 06:35:28 AM
Hello Experts !!

I have converted my RD350 to points ignition and am happy I did .... I enjoy the character the bike has now with points : )

One issue as I think all have is setting up the timing ..

My issue is every time is set timing to 2~2.1 mm BTDC  after say 20 ~30 km only the timing drifts back to 1.7mm BTDC. Points are NEW and Cam is in excellent condition, all the screws are hand tight at wrist torque..

Now is this normal ? has anybody actually checked the timing after 20 km ? just for the sake of it ? am curious to understand the reason for  this timing getting retard so quickly. Though she still gives a back kick as you Switch ON power to the coils ..and starts n rides okay  but its kind of annoying to have the timing at 1.7mm BTDC

General Chatter / Crank bearings preparation ?
October 15, 2021, 09:07:30 AM
Ok so I have ordered bearings from ebay ....usa n uk

Middle bearings are NOS bit stiff and the 30 40 years old lubricant has turned sticky brown :)

Is it good idea to soak them in 2T oil overnight  before building the crank?

Or just use them as is and they will smoothen up ?

Turning Wrenches / RD350 crank pin hollow vs solid
October 15, 2021, 04:57:06 AM
Hi All ,

I am going to rebuild my crank now ans I got 2 options on crank pin I bought from eBay are the solid crank pins and one I get locally are with hole

My machinist told me we can't use solid pins as they will imbalance the crank .. I don't understand this properly .

What pins you guys use when rebuilding the crank ? Existing pins reused ? Or new pins ? Hollow or solid ?

General Chatter / Rd350 A/B crank pin 8G8-11681-00
September 23, 2021, 10:11:59 AM
Hi ,

I have to rebuild my crank due to issues as it seems the weight is lose or my webs are rubbing in cenak case giving silver flakes ..very fine ones and powder like lead deposition on to head and piston top area ..even my right plug is silver grey ...

I have been looking and found the part number 8G8-11681-00 but this one looks to be solid pin and the ones came in bikes in India were hollow ones .

Do we have any part number to look for hollow crank pins ? and can I use these solid ones in case I don't get hollow ones ? Any impact ?

Hello Experts ,

I have come by to a set of exhausts which are locally made as copy of RD 350 Exhausts and are quite popular as I can say ...

The main difference we found is the USA/Indian Exhausts has holes in first baffel from engine -- USA ones has 4 each - left and right and Indian exhausts had 4left and 6 right

And the copy I have seen doesn't  have any holes but just 4 plain baffle plates spaced in the exhausts that too is not similar to Yamaha specs..

Now as per my understanding the holes are made to handle the back pressure and if there are no holes it may cause overheating of the engine-- STOCK ENGINE ..with Stock porting and ignition and fueling ...

Anybody can share any consequences involved in such design without any holes ?

Turning Wrenches / Crank nose Play and Points Timing
September 01, 2021, 10:07:33 AM
Hello Experts ,

I have been working on Getting my bike converted back to points for past 3  months ..

The cam I got had the PIN removed and i had to time it at 2MM BTDC and was successful but then it slipped ..

So I put the pin back and now with the standard cam pin its firing at 3.5 MM BTDC fully retarded points plate.

Then I checked my crank with Dial gauge and magnetic stand and it found 0.15mm deviation on the crank nose .and as per the manual I have its limit is .03MM

Now question is will tat affect the timing ? or add up to the timing ? I am about to open my engine and have the crank balanced ...the question comes in my mind is my CDI set up was working well and firing at 2mmBTDC but not the points .

Need some guidance on what direction I should go and whether the crank rebalance will help .

Set up

Stock RD350
Original new points set to 0.35mm gap
Original new cam
Generator and Magnet is used but in good condition no issues there as the battery is charging , voltage is around 13 to 14.5V during the ride ..the first time before the cam slipped...

Hi All ,

I had to remove the clutch side cover to install the oil pump gear.
I removed take pedal in the process, now it's not going without removing exhaust as I have to test the brake shaft forward and install which I can't do without taking exhaust out
Is there a way ?

Hi folks ,

As am going on oil pump setup frst time ... I am trying to clean my oil tank .
The inlet rubber tube was broken and what not has gone inside the tank

I am worried about the rut chips n particles those are coming out as I am giving a petrol wash from inside by pouring 50 60 ml of petrol n shaking it and trying to flush it from either inlet or Dip stick holes .

The out let hole looks to be free ...

Question is how you clean such oil tank ?
