Title: Oil Pump Gear
Post by: Milan on August 29, 2022, 05:49:36 PM
Is this oil pump gear supposed to turn back & forth a little, until tightening the bolt?

Or is the tang on the washer, that locks it in place,  below it worn?

Just wanting to know if its supposed to fit firm prior to bolt.

I've never seen that arrangement before. What bike is this? If the crank spins in the normal orientation, then I take it that bolt on the end is l/h thread?

Normal thread shoulder bolt with star washer
Primary gear turns clockwise.

This is the washer that locks the gear from the back.

The tang sticks into a recess in the gear.

Mine is sloppy, so the gear wobbles right - left until tightened.
I went ahead & ordered a new one, to see if the old tang was worn out.

you just need to tighten the outer bolt correctly w the lock washer under the bolt and it wont move. Also use blue loctite. ive never had an issue w one of those out of all the triples ive owned. the tang is a 'hail mary' incase it ever comes loose, as yours did.

I concur. I started working on Triples in the 70s and have never seen one loose. Blue loctite and tight as stated.
