Title: New to me work space
Post by: 85RZwade on February 05, 2023, 12:50:01 PM
We're all moved into the house we bought...except all my stuff in Dennis's garage! I now have a little garage all my own, and I have to fit all my good shit inside, as well as find space to work on things; organization will be critical! Some before and after move-in:

Here's what I've perpetrated so far:

Looks like you need to get some Barrina LED lights in there

nice. get shit tons of led shop lights. totally worth it.

i have 16 2' strips in a 2 car garage. the more, the better.

I have convinced numerous people to get some LED shop lights and every single person has come back and said it was one of the best investments they have made in their shop. For like a $100 you can really light a 2 car garage up. They work great for working under a hood or beneath a car too. They aren't fragile like a standard bulb style shop light but they also create a much wider range of light. I glued some magnets to one, glued the cord into the socket, it's handy and was like $8 all said and done.

Remember the law of "stuff" - stuff multiplies to occupy all space allotted. Then continues multiplying.

I have four 8' fluorescent fixtures and some instructions to convert them to LED. I totally agree that lighting is paramount; my eyes need all the help they can get! There are also plans to build shelves, cupboards and benches, as well as divest myself of some stuff.

cheaper to get the barrina ones. those conversions are a pain the ass. i did it once, never again. https://www.amazon.com/Barrina-Integrated-Fixture-Utility-Electric/dp/B07DNPL2VC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=3TZQ6GJO3OMUW&keywords=%286+Pack%29+Barrina+LED+T5+Integrated+Single+Fixture%2C+4FT%2C+2200lm%2C+6500K+%28Super+Bright+White%29%2C+20W%2C+Utility+LED+Shop+Light%2C+Ceiling+and+Under+Cabinet+Light%2C+Corded+Electric+with+ON%2FOFF+Switch%2C+ETL+Listed&qid=1675696927&s=hi&sprefix=6+pack+barrina+led+t5+integrated+single+fixture%2C+4ft%2C+2200lm%2C+6500k+super+bright+white+%2C+20w%2C+utility+led+shop+light%2C+ceiling+and+under+cabinet+light%2C+corded+electric+with+on%2Foff+switch%2C+etl+listed%2Ctools%2C109&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFUTzlMOVpERDRWQUcmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAzNTA0NTUzREJQNVZOU01DWUEwJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA2OTc0NTdSVzE1QkpRTzVOVCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

and you can link them all. best thign i ever did and yes, i was one of those on here that took the suggestion.

Conversion*is* a PIA, I know from some 'farming' I did.  I converted and old fluorescent rig to LED and found that new fixtures is the easy way to go.  Rip those old ones out and start fresh.

Same lights I use, love them. When we moved into this house 7 years ago, we picked a house that I could build a bigger shop. I blew out the back wall of a 24X30 garage, and added 24X32 to it. Still not enough, good luck with your new space, we all need more room.

I recently had a ballast in one of my 8' fluorescent fixtures smoke up. That was a bit alarming because it melted a big hole in the metal ballast case when it shorted and could have burned the place down. I went and bought a fancy Chinese $40 solid-state ballast and a couple of 8' LED replacement tubes. Installed the ballast before I read the box for the LED tubes that said "You must remove the ballast transformer from your fluorescent light fixture before using".  :bang:

I'm super anxious to get these lights installed; it'll make building shelves a bunch more pleasant. More pictures to come!

Only four of sixteen lights put up, and I clearly have more than I need; I think twelve will be more than adequate. Put shelving across the back wall with brackets supplied by the illustrious dgorms. Each bracket is rated at 500 pounds, so I think my crap will stay up there.

Then I put up a second, shorter shelf above the first, level with the top plate of the rear wall:

I know, it's kind of hard to see. Believe it or not, there is some semblance of order up there! I tried to scribble something on the end of the boxes as I put them up for future reference. There is more and more floor showing, and I'm anxious to start building the work bench. There are the two dirt bikes parked on the back wall, and I THINK there will be enough room for six bikes along there when the old bench and my tool boxes get out of the way (KTM, XR200R, RZ350, RZ350, RD350B and RD350LC). Dennis right now is wondering where the three bikes I'm storing at his place are going to park...

About a year ago I bought a Barrina 8-pack and put a few up. I love them so much that I'm now planning to rearrange the previous lights I already had up and add the rest of the them in the areas where I do most of my work. And I'm considering getting another package of them to really make the place bright.

Glad you have decent place to store all your parts and stuff... and a place to work in.
But like the rest of the US it won't last long. More will be needed before long.

I do the same, I am more surprised that so many people walk by my garage without stopping.  They can definitely see whats going on as I also fell victim to the Barrina amazon deal and put up at least 16 of them :celebrate:

OK this thread is getting too deep, LOL. If any of you fellas were my neighbors we'd be the best of pals. A.) I like bikes and B.)I don't have a garage. Dam I wish I didn't like in such a homely part the country, too much winter and surrounded by breeders, the few who do ride bikes are mostly all on Harleys that barely ever need much more than a oil change cause they hardly get ridden.

Gotta have a surface to beat on things, right? I have been toting lumber home from work for weeks to use in my shelving and now workbench projects; one nice thing about working at a tractor dealership is all the crate lumber that is available...free.

I read somewhere that if you're going to build a workbench, it's best to overbuild it. Or maybe I made that up.

I'm told these posts are Eastern oak; I don't know, but they are super dense and heavy. Should support two-stroke twin engines adequately.

Title: Re: New to me work space

Thanks guys; I would  to insulate and sheetrock the place (I do know a sheetrock professional ), but it's not in the budget. Maybe someday, but I have thought about a little wood or pellet stove...if I stumble across one cheap. I do have the aforementioned source of free pallet and crate wood, but not a lot of room to store a firewood supply.
I'm still beavering away at the bench, and hope to have some substantial progress to show soon. The weekend is coming!

Get some insulation and drywall up in there Wade.  Otherwise it'll be hot as hell in the summer and cold as ballz in winter.

Buy the materials, beer and pizza, and be Dennis' gofer.

You know you'll regret it if you don't.

Another marketplace find; listed as a shop box, it turned out to be a shop FOX. My idea was to eliminate some things from my newly-built workbench.

In addition to a bench grinder and vise, I have a drill press and belt sander crafted by the talented (and deceased) father of an old friend. They use 24 VDC army surplus motors, powered by a converter that turns 120 VAC to 24 VDC.

I made a top for it, then mounted the converter inside the box

A portable workstation that can roll out into the sunshine (yes, we get sunshine here)!

another update: my progress may be slow, but at least it's gradual. I think I'm finished with the garage lighting, as I feel the need to wear sunblock 30 in there.

yeah, it's still cluttered, but, believe it or not, it's getting better all the time. Threw some stuff away, gave some stuff to the neighborhood tweaker, sold some stuff and arranged a bunch more.

shelving made from John Deere crates are my favorite, unless they're old, yellow and made of aluminum:

It's been a good week. I won't bore you with all the details, but I am a happy and grateful man. My boss retired one of our lifts as "scrap" and let me know that I should make it go away.

It needs a hose repaired and one pivot tightened up, and it will be ready to go! It's a Handy motorcycle lift with 8" side extensions (not pictured), so it will handle riding mowers nicely. Good things come to those who wait.
