General Chatter / New oil topic - Air Filter Oil!
June 09, 2021, 01:48:47 PM
I just got some Uni foam filters. Been using Y-Boot with a K&N filter that doesn't really fit my RD 350. Uni included a warning about "severe engine damage" if not oiled but no suggestions on what oil. Obviously they want you to buy theirs. K&N usually includes some.

I know that I have to oil the filters but what can you use other than the Uni filter oil? I have used plain motor oil in the past per OEM instructions. I was perusing various forums and the topic was rather hotly debated. It was fairly well agreed that K&N oil was not OK for foam. Belray has some. There's something called No-Toil (that's widely out of stock it seems), Maxima, Klotz, and Lucas. Some people (several) said to just use 2-stroke oil ostensibly because it will be harmless if ingested by the engine... Others said 'any' foam filter oil. Some disagreed. You know how it goes...

Don't really feel like buying Uni's secret oil unless it happens to be available at a local auto parts or cycle store or it is agreed by all to be A#1. Their filter service kit is ~$25 for oil and cleaner. I don't want a dirt bike product designed to be washed out and reapplied every outing. I got the feeling that No Toil was more like that. It is water soluble and "plant based" so it can be cleaned with hot water. They also have a classic oil product with an associated cleaner.

Recommendations?

Looks like a good price for a cafe conversion. $7500.

He is calling it an unfinished project but it doesn't look that unfinished to me

General Chatter / RD hub casting flanges
June 01, 2021, 12:26:13 PM
I never even noticed the casting flash(?) on the inside of RD hubs. It makes cleaning them up a drag.

Is there any structural value to these? I somehow find them aesthetically offensive.

I've seen talk of people removing them on other forums. I was considering having them cut off and the inside of the hub skimmed in a lathe.

So are they sprue remnants that Yamaha was too cheap to grind off or intentional ribs to add rigidity? Their placement right on the parting line makes me wonder. I assume these were produced in a multi-gang mold and there don't seem to be any other sign of gates or runners.

Advice ranges from "Don't do it" to "I always remove them". You can see that the factory just jammed them into a grinder to finish.

The 4-Stroke Blasphemy Forum / Vcyclenut ECU flash
January 13, 2021, 09:53:07 AM
Anybody have experience with Vcyclenut ECU flash?

https://www.vcyclenut.com/.

After installing an Akrapovic exhaust on my XSR900 I am getting a ton of popping and backfires without the cat. Especially bad with the cold start active. It mostly goes away when the engine is warmed up. It has been suggested elsewhere that this can be mitigated by flashing the ECU with a new tune.

There would seem to be other benefits available as well as optional add-ons. Now would be a good time to have an idle bike while the roads are icy. Other options include dyno tuning and things like Power Commander V.

Yeah so I want one of these pretty bad. Really bad... It needs to be on the Dragon.

https://www.thedrive.com/news/38410/the-tipo-184-kit-transforms-your-miata-into-a-30s-style-grand-prix-racer-for-less-than-11000

I have a "spare" '63 Giulia Spider. I wonder if Ant can build one to use that instead of a Miata donor. It has real Alfin drums. And a real Alfa engine too.

It wouldn't be a 450 hp 1.5 L straight 8 but it seems better than Miata power.

I've seen a real one running up close at Monterey. It was a moment.

eBay/FB Marketplace/Craigslist watch / 1998 Aprilia RS250
November 30, 2020, 03:31:15 PM
It's from that John Hollywood character in Vegas $14,995

1118 miles claimed on it. I knew a gal 25 years ago who inherited a '69 Dodge Daytona Hemi from her father that still had the original redline tires on it and 17k on the odo. I was rebuilding the fuel system when her brother took her to court over it. I just wanted to drive it once. Why do people buy things and stick them in a shed? This was probably behind the couch...

This guy looks like a used car salesman to me. He also has that "NIB" Euro RD400 for $12 grand that has been around.
https://atlanta.craigslist.org/sat/mcd/d/las-vegas-1976-yamaha-rd400-european/7234024017.html

I don't actually know what these are worth but $14k seems high to me. I'm sure it's a great machine and all. Don't think I would pay that much for any 250. This has a Suzuki RGV 250 IIRC.

I'm tempted to get this one myself. It's really clean and the price is very fair.

Would look great parked in line at the Gap.

I don't know exactly where to put this. I found it on a chopper forum.

It is a listing of Japanese bikes matched to the sizes of rear axle, steering stem bearings, and fork tubes. Separated by the numerical sizes.

Chopper guys were wondering why they needed Jap parts info...

I cleaned it up some. It was mashed together and pasted into HTML directly on a forum web page.

Only reason I am putting it in the Speed Shop is that it is not primarily separated by make.

Mark can figure out the best place to put it. One of those things that has probably made the rounds. No idea of the original author.

Turning Wrenches / Wheel building information
September 09, 2020, 02:33:08 PM
Guys,
I am contemplating building a set of aluminum rims for my '73 RD 350 cafe bike using stock hubs/drum rear brake. I have spares. My stock wheels are wobbly and old.

This is for street use. Everyone seems to have high regard for Buchanan. Are there other sources I should consider? One-stop has a lot of convenience.

I realized while perusing the Buchanan site that there are many different options and I don't know which things to select or why.

--Rim type, brand, and size. 18". What is the upper rim width limit and tire size for an RD rear wheel with stock swingarm?

--Spoke type, material, and gauge. I was thinking stainless...? Are there optional lacing patterns or do you reproduce the stock wheel?

--Nipple material. If using stainless spokes is there a superior choice? Stainless steel to stainless steel threaded joints can cause problems.

What are the pros and cons of shouldered, dimpled, Vs. non-... rims. Leaning towards non-shouldered. No idea why dimpled or smooth.

Sun, Excel, Borrani? The differences in appearance are not all that significant to me.

I don't need polished, painted, or chrome. Matte aluminum color is just fine for spokes, nipples and rim.

A discussion similar to the recent swingarm thread would be great. What have people done for wheels? The collective knowledge here is a wonderful thing!

2 stroke liquid cooled 6 speed 50cc.

If your 16 yo daughter needs her first 2 stroke motorcycle this is it!

https://charlotte.craigslist.org/mcy/d/marshville-1990-honda-ns50f/7178086529.html

Says 1 year only US 1990 model. Nice shape and it is not an MB5.

Cute. 90's Teenage cheerleader color scheme. but $1000 more than I'd pay if I even wanted one...

Probably fast for a 50 if you weigh less than 150 lbs.

Not my bike etc.
