Turning Wrenches / Aluminum swingarm quest
September 01, 2020, 09:18:07 AM
Aluminum swingarms come up from time to time; we all seem to want them, but they're hard to find and/or $$$. Jim recently posted a link to a site in Japan auctioning a ZRX400 arm that was relatively cheap, aluminum and designed for twin shocks. I've looked for years at and for Zephyr 550 arms.
I'm thinking of RDs, but information for any twin-shock bike is of interest.
Besides the DG, Calfab and custom-made beauties, what else is out there in the OEM world that people have used? What did it take to make it fit?

Not mine

That's dirt cheap, but are they a better alternative to...?

Events / Angry Bees 7
August 02, 2020, 10:14:32 AM
I had the good fortune to be invited to the 2020 iteration of Angry Bees, a 2-stroke ride put on by Garrett's dad, Charlie.

I think we started with 23-ish bikes, from memory:
3 RZ350s (I'm sure of that)
1 Bultaco Metralla
1 Kawasaki H1
1 Kawasaki H2
1 Suzuki PE175 (didn't ride)
1 Yamaha DT175/YFS200 hybrid
1 Yamaha RD250
1 Yamaha RD350
2 Yamaha R5s
1 Yamaha XS400
1 Honda CB200
1 Ron Wood framer w/SR500 engine and lights(!)
1 Husqvarna 300
1 Sweet little Yamaha DS-7!
And several gorgeous Yamaha RD400s, one with 1600 original miles AND TIRES!

85-ish miles of fine Washington back roads and bits of mountain highway with beautiful weather, a good lunch, a surprise visit to a local collector's cool bike and muscle car hoard (we kinda crashed a bridal shower), good fun and great people. Throttle cables were stretched!

Thanks, Charlie!

I posted elsewhere a picture of a Kawasaki turbo; this Suzuki was parked next to it

It's been there awhile, I think they're having trouble with it. The owner told me I could ride it if I could fix it.

J&Rs, right? I imagine it sounds wonderful...

Show Off / This Old Gear
July 02, 2020, 01:14:38 AM
I found these in a tote, they were the first street gloves I bought after graduating from work gloves, circa 1988. They seem to have shrunk!

They protected my hands admirably in The Incident but suffered some. I sewed that palm patch on myself as an underfed college student, then color-matched it with an el marko.
Anyone else have some vintage riding togs to show?

The 4-Stroke Blasphemy Forum / WTB: CT70 K0 parts
June 17, 2020, 08:32:22 AM
My buddy is going to re-live his childhood and needs some parts. 1970 K0 Honda CT70, he needs a carburetor, intake manifold and the entire airbox. I found most of it on eBay and Partzilla for him, but the manifold has been elusive. Does anyone have some old Honda parts with which they'd, uh...part?

Turning Wrenches / Bearings??
April 19, 2020, 12:42:57 PM
:help: Getting a shopping list together, mostly bearings, seals, gaskets. Looks like LC bottom end/transmission bearings are the same as RZ, and all are available from Partzilla/boats.net. Might see if I can still get a little break from the Yamaha shop where I used to work, otherwise is there another source for OEM Yamaha or equivalent bearings that is recommended?

I'm available to pick it up and offer long-term storage if anyone buys it...

The 4-Stroke Blasphemy Forum / New Arrival
April 09, 2020, 01:19:54 AM
So I tightened my belt and decided to do things on my project bikes that cost $0...and she bought a bike. A freakin' four-stroke, at that! A friend had this '04 Honda CRF250X and needed a few bucks, we have three full-size boys and only two full-size bikes, so I came home to another carburetor to clean. Stinky, green used-to-be-fuel  :brownseat:. And 'kin 'ell, what a carburetor to get out!

Flip the subframe up, three cables, a fuel line, a TPS cable and 106 vent hoses later and it's finally out. Taking it with me to work tomorrow (the carb) for a date with the ultrasonic cleaner.

Cages, Floaters and Flyers / Found the problem
March 11, 2020, 09:28:37 AM
:bang: been slowly rehabbing an old motor home for a couple of years now: brakes, tires, batteries, toilet, floor repair, fuel pump, new fluids and tune-up. I was going to drive it to work Monday to fill the propane tank, but it wouldn't start, just cranked and cranked.  :umm:
Last night, I discovered why:

It absolutely REEKS of stale gas, and there's a bit of water in that crap.

This rat bastard looks like it'll be way more fun to clean than a motorcycle carb, and then I get to clean out the fuel tanks!  :(

Turning Wrenches / Hey, RD400 guys...
March 07, 2020, 01:53:34 AM
My buddy has a 76 RD400 project he's building, and somewhere along the way he acquired a set of cylinders with, supposedly, Banshee sleeves installed.
1) is this possible, probable or maybe even common?
2) if so, why would it have been done?
He's got a set of stock cylinders as well, and we're talking about which set he should bolt up when the time comes. Thanks!

Events / 2020 One Moto Show, Portland OR
February 09, 2020, 10:03:16 AM
My son and I attended the One Moto Show and indoor flat track races yesterday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, OR yesterday, and it was pretty great. Plenty to see and do, lots of cool bikes, good people-watching and good racing. Ran into some old friends I hadn't seen for 20 years and made some new ones. Had a conversation with a man who who knows a guy who knows Garret of GRA, and he invited me to ride with the Angry Bees. Saw one of Julian's bikes in person, finally, after reading about them for years.
I was happy to see our favorite kind of bikes pretty well represented, so in case you couldn't attend this year, I hope you enjoy my photographic attempts:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/133325415906

These are for H,J,K and some later TZs, not compatible (that I know of!) with RDs, RZs or LCs. I'd be happy to be proven wrong and happier still to sell this stuff. There's a list of part numbers on North American Two Strokes, Buy/Sell/Swap, 5F7 parts available.

Anybody have personal experience, strong opinions, general observations or sneaking suspicions regarding WSM pistons as sold by TDR?
