Alright, I know its ok to start another project while another is nearing completion, only because I have read about others here. So, I have just scored is a R5 frame and swing arm, I have RD350 wheels and forks, also a RD400 engine. I need to find a tank, seat, and other bits. You guys have some input on direction of this project. I am thinking alloy rims, and follow a stock appearance.
I've got ki da the same situation.
A bike I'm doing mostly stock but enough parts to build another but not enough to be normal. I think street tracker style with modern suspension and wheels.
Good luck .. looking forward to see what you come up with.
Thanks for the input, I have my project that has a mono shock and front fork swap well underway, I am thinking sorta a stock look with subtle changes, maybe :umm:

Minimalist!
I like it, alloy rims. Painted hubs or polished? I need to locate a disc for the front. I plan on using stock RD350 hubs. What
year and model rotor fit? I guess I need to search the site more, I am sure it is hiding in plain site. :vroom:
stock brakes or large?
fzr 600 or 1000, and some ducati rotors fit but it makes the caliper adapter needed and a spacer behind the rotor. I have a bunch of stock discs i'll never need as well.
Bigger disc for front and updated caliper. Mark did you have a file for a caliper adapter? What years for the large rotors?
it sin the tech library, look for the dxf. mid 90s fzr600, etc.
Mark thanks for the info. Well spent some time to get the 400 parts ready for reconditioning, cylinders going to John for his finesse, and not sure who to have rebuild the crank. Lyn is not able at this moment.
Are you having the heads massaged as well?
Yes the heads will be worked with the cylinders, John informed of the details of his offer. I am tickled to have him work on these parts.
I now have to choose who to build the crank.
How about Wilson? I think he does cranks
wilsonperformance.net
Thanks for the info, I went to his site to investigate. I have a question for those in the know. The 400 crank I have needs building. here is the state of the crank. the ignition side bearing is no longer a press fit, I could slide it off by hand, the shaft shows no sign of scoring from the bearing seizing, it has a polished appearance. will the shaft be ok to rebuild?
Lyn Garland can rebuild the crank for you - he is just south of Atlanta. You can send it to you m and he'll be able to evaluate it.
He's a member here Yamaha179.
Thanks for the info, I live in the area of Lyn, he built my last 350 crank, he is not doing work at this time.
Recommended Ed Toomey , I guess I will contact Ed also.
new pistons made it in today. off to John to perform the work.
Well I have to say work was unfun however I had the chance to meet John Ritter during my Tennessee tour and boy what a treat. I returned home today with treats in my mailbox, new ignition from Treatland . Items arrived quickly.
I've not met the illustrious Mr Ritter, but I have dealt with Treatland. Great outfit, aren't they?
I agree, they processed the order and got it out the door. Thanks again for the tip Wade.
Today was a good day for the progress of my R5 project. Mr. Ritter has performed his work on my RD400 cylinders and heads, I really enjoy seeing quality workmanship, and what a delight. Wossner pistons and some Ritter work. Just need more money :bang:
well all I can say it has been hella good week, and the cherry on top is the 400 crankshaft that John Ritter rebuilt, arriving at the house today.
If you need crank work jump in quick, he is lining up work now. Hard not to be excited about quality workmanship :olaf: :metal:
Looks good !
Thanks. I agree
I could not leave well enough alone, I sent the rd400 cylinders and pistons and heads back to John for more aggressive port work. I received Carbs today, I went with Keihin PWK 35's. Now it's time to clean off a bench and organize to start the reassembly of the engine.
More aggressive port work and 35s? Better order a longer swingarm.
Wade, that takes all the fun out of it :celebrate: can you say mouse trap? LOL. I agree, This engine may find its way into my RD with ninja suspension swap, the swing arm is longer on that setup. swap the 350 engine to the R5 project. I am having fun with the possibilities. :righteous:
Mouse trap! love it
started to round up all the items to assemble the RD400 engine for the R5 build. I am sure that something is missing somewhere but I will find out when final assembly occurs. John performed some port work and head rework for a spirited machine.
here is a side by side of RD reed cage and a YZ85 reed cage. cylinders have been opened up for the yz cage.
Checking the cache of parts I have been collecting over the past few months, and hoping it all there :umm: any way the reassembly is underway.
looks really good, you're going to be very happy w the results.
Ive got a 73 that Iam cutting loose.. Cheep !
I have slowly been reassembling the rd400 engine, and have made it to the HPI ignition install. I am sure there is some info on here about an install on this , looking for input on HPI install quirks. I am using Vape on my RD350. first install of HPI.
I have been looking on eBay for a tank, they either want too much, or the tank is too rusty. I found one that looked rough but was not rusty inside. so repair on the tank begins. Plenty of prep and sanding ahead.
I never much understood how dents get in the tops of tanks like that.
looks like good progress.
believe it or not, I used an old exhaust head tube from the kz project and was able to insert into tank and coax almost all of the dent out, had to be a good 3/8" down. When it started returning to a more normal position I was worried it was going to oil can and revert back to some of its previous shape..

my guess would be a womans boney ass ?!?!?!?! :olaf:
My guess is a fist print because some rocket scientist who did no maintenance couldn't figure out why it wouldn't run like a new one and attempted to beat it into submission.
you guys are killing me gotta love it both excellent hypothesis :umm: I'm voting for the boney one
alright I have about 3 hours in the repair of the tank and its making good progress and for 45$ and shipping of 30$ I'm liking the choice. It still needs additional filling and sanding however it is so much better than when it arrived.
could of been something like this maybe...maybe. NOT :celebrate: Sorry I digress ...
Looking good!
well took some time after work today to look at the 350 tank on the R5, I also purchased a saddlemen tail section and seat for this project and now think I might do the same for my 350 project.
i think im the only person int he world that doesn't like tracker seats. upholstery looks nice.. tank looks fantastic.
LOL. I grew frustrated with other seat challenge and went with the tracker seat. I know comfort is not gonna be there with this combo , Mark do you know if a r5 and rd seat will swap?
they absolutely do. all the r5/rd250/350 (75 and back) body work will actually swap and in any combination.
Im waiting on my texavina seat to come rolling in any week now for my 72.
That's the one I have been eyeballing. how long has your wait been at this point?
few weeks, it typically takes 4? or so.
