Ported heads...

Someone should rescue these.  A pair of 1970's in Las Vegas.  $2000.

I would love a set of 1970 tins.

I saw one that was running around the pits at NJMSP a few years ago.  Those suckers are absolutely ear splitting.

Tempting.  Even after rebuilding/rebushing my last gen MC rearsets they are just ok.

Regarding the rearset interference.... If you have a torch and vise, they can be bent.
The easy way is to use an RZ kick lever.  It's plug and play.

You have *got* to look at charging voltage and generator brushes.  In the past my R5 would die on the road, the battery was slow draining.  You need to maintain a full charge to run well.

As far as I could tell, there weren't good instructions ever published.  Nick *did* (for some reason) publish "European RD400" docs, which may help.  Also, they aren't that complicated so like Mark said...

Also it's been discussed here a few times...

I am old enough to remember when Panteras were new.  The ads in the car magazines had them listed at $11,250 MSRP if I recall cor.

Regarding front drum brakes, I also had an older front drum Enfield when I got my R5, so was already trained in braking anticipation.

On the R5, a new set of shoes and proper setup ( you can have them professionally done but I haven't) and they work pretty good, again braking anticipation is key.

When bits are polished and rechromed, it sure looks koool...

I ruined my originals by trying to "polish".  Ended up with Buchannons stainless and they look fantastic ten years after Sandy...

Regarding pistons, I got my R5 in 2007 and finding pistons and rings back then was a big chore.
Along came and HVC and Wossner with options.  Seems like after that, hoarders began making NOS Yamaha pistons sets "available" at reasonable prices.

I happen to have HVC's +.75 repops in mine since the last rebuild and have >3000 miles on them (knock wood).  I also put a six speed trans in at that time but continue to enjoy the piston port motor.

Turning Wrenches / Re: Refinishing Pipes…

Finally ready for spring.   Saw a window today for garage time.
All set, I was dying to fire it up but the pipe sealant needs a day to set up.
Spit polished, battery charged, oil changed, heads torqued, aluminum polished, carb leak resolved, pipes repaired and painted.
