General Chatter / NGK Plugs
April 01, 2020, 12:33:58 PM
I always thought a B8HS was a B8HS, etc. I've seen plugs with/without the nut on top but figured there weren't many other options given size, heat range, reach etc. Apparently my pack of plugs has a way different gap from the factory than my usual prescribed gap. Like it's at 1mm (.039) I'm looking for .55mm (.022).
When I adjust the gap these plugs have a goofy looking strap.

Run em?

Turning Wrenches / Closed throttle
February 28, 2020, 10:12:26 PM
Excuse my basic bitch question but how well do RDs handle higher RPM closed throttle?
Is it best to dis-engage the clutch?
Does being on an oil pump have a effect?

Common sense tells me yes to all three but never heard it mentioned...

How bad of an owner would I be if I took my 50 year old R5 out on our salt encrusted roads?
Highs in the mid 40s, extremely salty roads, and a full grown man with little willpower...

I suppose I have other bikes with more plastic but I'm just excited about getting this one out.

Show Off / My R5
February 13, 2020, 08:04:45 PM
I'm coming down the home stretch on this project. I bought it three years ago or so it was a slightly neglected, but nice R5. It surprised me with a 6-speed transmission and early RD cases, later 7(?) plate clutch, R5 ignition and RD crank. With the R5 top end on its first bore (.25mm).
I've been playing with this bike a bunch and learned a lot about two strokes in general in the last few years.
Then I bought a stage 2 RD350 Dr. Chuck top end off this forum and tucked the bike into my basement to keep me busy. Chuck (and many other) helped a bunch with getting the old girl setup and I ended up going with an RD400 trans, TM32 flat slides, HPI ignition, Spec2 Classics, XS-1 front drum laced to an R5 rim, fresh Supertune crank and a bunch of other crap I'm sure.
I can't wait for spring unfortunately it's like 0 out right now...

General Chatter / Rear stand
February 11, 2020, 08:39:48 PM
Anybody have a rear stand they use that makes it so you don't have to remove the exhaust on an RD?

My old cheap stand doesn't really work...

eBay/FB Marketplace/Craigslist watch / GT550

Don't know anything about these but price seems realistic.

Team Scream / Supertune, Superdude
January 25, 2020, 03:14:36 PM
I just wanted to give credit where credit is due. I bought a top end that Chuck had worked some magic on from somebody on the forum and needed a few things done to my bike, and Chuck helped every step along the way and was/is always quick to answer any questions to a relative noob like myself. Everything he sells is reasonably priced and given the once over before sent out.
Now I wait for no snow and few final touches on this thing before I can give the old girl a proper flogging.

Turning Wrenches / Pressure Test
January 24, 2020, 08:30:13 PM
I've got my RD350 project assembled and pressure tested. I cannot get these reeds/reed spacers to seal. I'm not too bad but at 6psi I lose about .4 psi in 7 minutes. I can only find tiny leaks between the reeds and spacer. I've tried twice with the same results. At this point I'm using a healthy bead of Mega Grey.

Good enough for the girls I date?

Turning Wrenches / Crank Seals
December 15, 2019, 10:21:11 AM
There are basically three crank seals on an rd350. Big one, smaller one and the keyway o-ring.
Do you guys put the two main seals in dry on the outside?

Also, which way does the nub go on the o-ring?

I thought I had a pic of the o-ring...

Thanks

Turning Wrenches / Swing arm bearings
November 30, 2019, 03:41:57 PM
I cannot feel any play out of my swing arm, I know that most Yamaha 2t twins get there swingarm bearings replaced with the bronze bushings.

I've always thought my old R5 handles pretty damn good for what it is.

How do you guys determine when these bearings need to be replaced?

Turning Wrenches / Petcock upgrade
November 11, 2019, 07:47:27 PM
Looking to run a higher flow petcock on my R5 tank. I vaguely remember on the old forum guys putting Pingel valves but, I'm pretty sure there is no direct fit.

What's the cheat code?

I'm open to any recommendations.

Turning Wrenches / R5 vs RD350 Crank
November 02, 2019, 07:16:27 AM
My R5 project has RD350 crank cases and transmission, with R5 stator/ignition timing.

My question is how do I tell the difference between an RD and R5 cranks?

General Chatter / All things being equal
October 31, 2019, 08:02:01 PM
Ok, all things being equal when making fun, useful power on an air cooled RD what proves the most beneficial?
Exhaust tuning: chamber, etc
Carburation: round slides vs flat slides, manifolds, boost bottles, reeds
Port timing:
Compression ration: reshaped head/combustion chamber, milled/decked cylinders etc
Ignition: better spark, ignition curve

Let's say AFR is spot on with good quality street gas.

Better yet give a percentage to each!

Turning Wrenches / 350 vs 400 transmission
October 26, 2019, 09:09:37 PM
I'm about to get started on my RD350/R5 project and am torn on what to do for my transmission. RD350 or RD400...
I've been recommended both.

What's your guys' experience?

Turning Wrenches / XS650 front brake/hub
August 30, 2019, 12:47:44 PM
Has anybody ever mounted an early XS650 (XS1) front hub and brake assembly to an R5?

I'm looking for better brakes but while still keeping it old school. I see the drum takes different shoes and the exterior looks bigger.

Turning Wrenches / Fresh Seat
August 15, 2019, 01:42:57 PM
On the old forum there was a guy who reupholstered his R5/DS7 seat. Apparently there is a trick to removing the metal trim piece.
Anybody have experience with this?
