Quote from: 85RZwade on February 19, 2024, 09:41:30 AMGenerally, the countershaft and shift shaft seals, neutral switch and shift rail plugs would be your likely suspects. Specific to your situation, it's likely to be coming from the breather tube.

Thanks for the heads up, it gives me a place to start, hopefully if its one of the seals it someing I can resolve with out having to split the cases, we will see.

Ok as the title says, did a dumb thing, feel a bit silly, I know I'm not the only person to do this, I hope. so drained oil, put new oil in, did it by measuring, not buy checking dipstick. Not all old oil drained, consequently over filled with oil, ran the bike for a while, but not hard at all. Now after riding it leaks oil for  a day or so but not the entire time, only leaks maybe an Oz every time I stop. some of it runs off the kick stand. My question is where is the mostly likely place it will be leaking from, I have had a look but the oil is so clear its hard to detected where its leaking from. Side cover, I did tighten them, also I did change the drain plug to a magnetic drain plug at that time, could that be it ? Then everyone. Cheers Karl

Quote from: m in sc on October 18, 2023, 11:01:05 AMi think i used m3 washers that were .020" in the past, but TBH, i rarely use shims in a final tune.

lol I was wondering if anyone used washers, I was thinking about going to an electronics store and see if I can get any. hmmmmm I'm surprised I thought it would be more common to use spacers. Thanks for chiming in, I appreciate it. I just get concerned about going too lean, I know what the out come is when your too lean at the top end, not sure of the consequesces of being too lean in the mid range so I'm trying to tread carefully. Mind you these are china pistons so I'm not too worried but on the other hand that bike is running good, its a fine line. lol :umm:

Turning Wrenches / Needle shims Mikuni VM28 73 RD350
October 18, 2023, 09:41:46 AM
Hey, question about Needle shims, I think a shim or 2 for the needle would be beneficial but I know nothing about them and need a bit of education.

Are they measured in MM or in fractions of an inch?.

I will go and measure this my self but does anyone know off hand what the measurement is between clip segments on the needle?

Does anyone know what the sizes are the shims come in.

I had my carbs set on the 2nd clip, it was good but seemed a bit rich, so I changed it to the first clip, definitely better but seems to have a bit of a flat spot or a lean bog in the 1/4 to half throttle so I was thinking of shimming the needle up a bit.

This only fixes the symtom, not the problem, however, I just turn the gas off on my petcock, if I dont' I'll have a few drops of gas under my bike, my problem is, I think, the gas line not having a snug enough fit over the nipple on the carb, I dont have clips for them anyway it may help or maybe you are already doing this. good luck buddy.

Quote from: m in sc on October 12, 2023, 10:43:39 AMrear mounts will be a bit off but not much, pretty easy to make it work. the bigger issue is the 400 flanges have a wider bolt pattern but you can slot the flanges to accommodate the 400 . will the pipe themselves work ok? more than likely yes, ive run 400 pipes on 350s and vice versa seem to work just fine but technically not ideal.
Thanks.

Quote from: m in sc on October 11, 2023, 06:57:55 PMcommon swap over the years, i had one.

rear upper mount doesn't line up (cam make on that does though) and the charging system is different but otherwise, direct bolt in. dont forget to ground motor since its rubber mounted.

will the JL pipes from a 350 work with a 400 in a 350 frame? Engine position is the same ?.

wow that looks perfect, nice.

I'm sure this has been done RD400 Engine in a 350 frame, has this been done? I was thinking I'd love rebuilding and RD400 Engine I really think the RD400's were fugly especially the gas tank unless its a 79 or 80, but the 400 engines are nice and I was thinking that would be nice in a 350 frame. so have many people done this, is there any obvious reason why that is a bad idea, is it hard to get the 400 engine in the frame?.

Quote from: m in sc on October 04, 2023, 05:18:23 PMI don't do a drive, the sites (technically and practically)  mine and I pay out of pocket, which isn't bad, i don't mind. I -need- to do another t shirt order though, i have sold them int he past to absorb some costs. . Mine are getting a bit ratty myself lol.

If you want to donate, cool. if not, don't sweat it.

pm me if you want to donate.
I'd be in for a T-Shirt, when do we order or when are you going to do them?.

Thanks so much for your help, you got me through this, it turned out well, even with Chinese Cylinders and pistons, I'm pleasantly surprised.
