A banshee engine builder that did Pikes Peak hillclimb for years told me he jetted richer on the right side because of higher heat from gearbox oil on the right side. As if jetting wasn't already hard enough there.

When 2 strokes got really fast in the 60's it took a while for the engineers to learn how to design a gearbox that didn't generate too much heat. Some did and some didn't so they figured it out pretty quick. Kevin Camerons story of the first KR250 race bikes with compact cases around the gearbox that looked really cool but got so hot the paint came off comes to mind.

Turning Wrenches / g3 100 piston, ignition
April 26, 2023, 02:27:21 PM
I was hanging out at the track with friends i only see a couple times a year and Jack was there on his I think 1971 Kawasaki G3 100. He says its the first year for the 100 and he can't find an oversize piston and rings, says it has a smaller wrist pin thats hard to match. I did some searching and yeah maybe they are hard to find so can any of you help me point him in the right direction?

He was also talking about the 6 volt electrics and I brought up Vape and HPI complete systems. He had never heard of them so I did some searching and see them for later KE and KH 100's. So once more can any of you tell me if the tapered crank end is the same on the old Kaw 100's? The bikes in great shape otherwise and it buggs me he rides it too easy so it doesn't break

Looks like a Monark 125 in second to last pic. oh boy wish I was there

See if your honda shop can get tires for a Dream 50. 2.50x18 Bridgestone bt39's that all ahrma racers use on little bikes. No they wont wear out in a month but have fun trying

Hey Tim, they don't idle at all on their own. You have to keep the throttle cracked like idle screws would do. They don't like running much below 1500. I'd rather not mod original TZ carbs, and slides aren't cheap. As little as it will be ridden I'm leaning towards leaving it as is.

It might make it harder to start if the slides dont close all the way. I'm thinking back to easy stall cr500's and if you made them idle they got harder to restart

Turning Wrenches / Re: 2 stroke tuners guide

i remember as a kid looking at my 125 elsinore cylinder and thinking WTF? Then the guys who I thought had a clue started slinging shit and I wondered if anyone knew WTF. I started working in a machine shop, not auto related my senior year 1978. One of the engineers helped me take apart and put together my brothers bmw 2002 motor. He explained the function of every part and how cam timing works. We were also setting up screw machines cycling several tools with cams all at once but not interfearing with each other. Then he showed me how the 2 stroke was the same only different with less parts. He had never seen the inside of one. I was on a Maico 490 by then and most of what he said was way over my head but as years past I clued in to each thing he taught me. I stumbled onto an add for Jennings book in the back of a magazine and freaked out, you mean people write books on this? I started searching magazines and buying books. It was 20 years later I found a Weber carb manual and realized what Bob the engineer was trying to say about port velocity. But back to Jennings book, its like Blair and they were formulating equations to be used in computer modeling that hardly existed yet. When I got Bell's book it was down to earth, these are parameters all good running motors share, how to adjust things and stay within what should be a good range compared to other features. How to decide what feature is the bottleneck holding things back. But yeah Jennings book is a must read like knowing math but use a calculator. Hell I hope to learn how to use dads slide rule before i'm gone

excited alternator, thanks Mark, I'll do some reading. Now i can concentrate on grafting a full new HPI or other ignition charging system to my oddball stinger and bridgestone

Turning Wrenches / Shindengen sh775 rectifier regulator
December 21, 2022, 11:50:31 AM
I'm much more mechanically inclined than electrical so I tend to follow others advice when wires are involved. On my 73 Norton Commando with zenner diodes and stuff the easy low charge voltage fix is the shindengen sh775 rr. It takes the 2 or 3 wires from the generator and connects + and - to the battery. They originally came on Polaris 4 wheelers and gained popularity with the old school 4 stroke crowd. Nowdays I see on forum's for modern bikes with stressed charging systems they use the sh775 or the next version up. Why am I not hearing about these on old 2 strokes like RD's?

Thanks for any feedback and Merry Christmas!

General Chatter / Re: Off-Roading at my age?
December 21, 2022, 11:21:10 AM
I have a lot of experience from a young age and backroads go on forever in Colorado. I recomend an old XR200 or 250 to start with. You can ride from your house in Salida and not go more than 30 miles away taking different mine roads each time. I like paper quadrangle maps from the US geological survey so I can pencil in roads I know. Later I like to compare with goggla earth satellite view. Big adventure bikes and lots of gear ruin the whole thing for me. I like to keep it simple and enjoy the ride kinda like rd350's do

I've got the same handlebars on a rz500 with r1 forks. I think the upper fairing is same as an rz350 that came with full fairing. Should be a good fit.

Coupla hours on a bridgeport mill. An endmill and center drill to keep centered. Left handed drill a little under stud size and a couple of those will screw out before you get to the bottom

Just my opinion but it looks like your right on the borderline minimum clearance and you got lucky. Hone it a half thousandth and put new pro x pistons in. I bet it doesn't do that again

Is that what they called twinjet back in the day? I've been fishing for a small Yam twin and pulled in a 125 Stinger and a Bridgestone so far.
I watched a couple videos of past events and hope to be there next year. Not on bookface so if theres any other rides give a heads up

General Chatter / Re: Repairing fork lowers

I have forks from my 73 kh400, i'm swappping wheels and suspension. Tubes are good just a couple rust spots hidden by triple clamps. Cheap plus postage from Oklahoma.
