Turning Wrenches / Throttle cable
March 16, 2023, 05:22:03 PM
Hello,
I'm trying to install a R5350 Throttle Cable from HVC. Does anyone have experience with their cables or those from Economy cycle?
Seems it is too long. Carb slides are bottoming out. I have throttle adjuster by the handle grip all the way backed out and adjusters at top of carbs all the way backed out

May be I need a guide to throttle cable installation.
Any advice appreciated as the weather is getting very nice where I am

Turning Wrenches / Re: Rebuilt R5 Engine break in

Didn't do a leak down test.  The engine was running fine before the rebuild so I guess I figured the crank seals were still good.
Will do one and report back

Turning Wrenches / Rebuilt R5 Engine break in
February 01, 2023, 06:14:04 PM
Hey again,

All the advice I've gotten here has led to me now starting my 71 R5 and breaking in the fresh top end. Wiseco pistons and bore.

Problem is that the left cylinder is overheating.  Running 32:1 premix. New vape ignition with key way to set ignition.

All went well for two start ups and slow undulating revving of the engine. I go for the third start up after letting the engine cool till warm and the rpms climbed higher and higher to 5k without touching the throttle. So I killed the engine, started again, and the same thing happen. I tightened the carb boots, started again, and it stayed around 2.5k.  The left cylinder got really hot quick and the right cylinder was warming up normally.

Any guidance to fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for all the input. I will put them on, run the bike till their nice and hot and have a go at sliding the baffles out then. I'm lucky enough to still have the crossbar on both baffles 👍  May need to craft a slide hammer
Roger on torching the baffles only when they are out.

Thank you very much!

Evans Ward,
Did you cut of the header off the pipe and then weld it back on?  I wouldn't be able to manipulate a broom stick through the curved header as is right now

Hi,
Am wondering what kind of heat stock chrome R5/RD pipes can take. I can't remove the baffles due to years of carbon buildup. Can I soak the inside of the pipes in diesel fuel and then set it a flame to let the carbon burn off?  Or simply heating the pipe with a propane torch until a flame takes then fanning it...Either way, can I start a fire in the pipes without damaging their shine?
Caustic soda diluted helped some but not as much as I'd like.

Thanks,
Tommy

Turning Wrenches / Top End Rebuild Help
December 05, 2022, 05:38:41 PM
Hi,

First off, thanks for taking the time to read this!
Straight to the point, and backstory after;

I need new pistons for my R5 top end rebuild & I have a few questions.
1) In regards to pistons, which piston would be best for a simple straight out of the box rebuild with a 64.25mm oversized bore?  I ask this because I've seen forums of people mentioning filing and grinding down piston skirts/ports for cast vs forged pistons and my head is spinning! I just want a piston that'll work out of the box with a simple R5 cylinder jug rebore to 64.25mm.  Is this possible?

2) Forged pistons, Wiseco, I like the sound of them - are they fitting for a street bike, every day rider?  The price is no issue.  I want something reliable and forgiving.

Thanks again!
Finally, after much creativity and heat and time and leverage and heat and elbow grease, I managed to get the original cylinder jugs off the motorcycle.  Over 50 years of crud on this crank studs! A local machine shop in town helped me.  Jacking power off the crank to exhaust port with rounded off hardware against the exhaust gasket - this is the way folks.
Before beginning with this rebuild, I purchased and got running again this motorcycle and managed to put 50 miles on it.  I could tell the rings were worn out pretty bad so here we are.  New top end! First time for everything

I appreciate the help.

Turning Wrenches / Re: 71' R5350 Is Electrified

Voltage at 2000 is about 13.6 volts.  Doesn't exceed more than 13.8 when revved to 4000.  Stock rectifier/regulator.  I have an aftermarket combo that I've been meaning to slap on.  The wiring harness looks beautiful under the tank - will run the bike with an auxiliary tank and watch for arching.
I'll stick to 32:1.  That left my plugs looking pretty, pretty...pretty nice and tan!

are the coils stock? or are they aftermarket ones? this def needs to be addressed.  I foyu look at the tech section, the sv650 coil mod is an option, or new ones from john at economy cycle .

coil & wire package (direct bolt in):

I have a set of original coils with original wires and caps - Are those of the resistor type?   I have that aftermarket coil you linked; would matching those coils with stock spark plug wires pose an issue? (Assuming the wires are not defective)

Thank you both very much! The links are helpful, m in sc.  The coils are aftermarket & have been sitting on the bike for years now without use.  I may find replacing the spark plug wires and plugs as being beneficial.
The problem is definitely not present before the bike warms.  I thing recently I ran into a fuel issue as I tried a 20:1 premix ratio.  Maybe I'll stick to a thinner 32:1 or consider a larger pilot to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks again,

Turning Wrenches / 71' R5350 Is Electrified
September 17, 2022, 09:52:00 PM
Hi there,
This will be my first post on this forum - happy to be here.  I have a few questions that when answered should leave me with a pretty solid R5.  Pics to come for you fine folk.
I have a 71' mostly stock R5350 that recently I've starting running & riding again - the catch is that when the bike has warmed, after roughly 10 minutes of riding, it will cut out and struggle to start again.  Recently this has been paired with a pretty nasty shock when I touch the metal of the bike, for instance when reaching to turn off the fuel - hurts.
Wonder if anyone might have some input on this grounding issues I seem to be having?  Overheating coils?

More importantly, possibly, is that I am running premix with a oil pump deletion - I may be running to lean as I have stock carbs and now oil in gas.   Should I increase from the pilot jet #40 and main jet #110 I currently have?  I can't seem to find larger parts readily accessible.

Thanks a bunch,
I'm enjoying exploring the forums,
Cheers - Tommy
