Hi guys I wanted to ask about the Deals Gap 2 stroke meet up. Is there a place i can learn more about it or?
http://www.kawi2strokes.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=35
bugger... dont think my rd will be ready in may. im looking for something different to do and trucking down there with the rd would have been an adventure for me. maybe i should push to get the bike done and try to make it.
Bring it as much of the roller you can make it to hit the road and we can all pitch in and get the engine running and tune it there!
2 years ago we all had a blast putting in a rebuilt crank and a new top end I built for Andrew and this years hammers a 200 mile day ride on it a year later...

btw, that was reassembled and running before midnight the same day. pete somehow broke the shift drum.
chucks definitely taken it up a notch though for the past few yrs.
That was such a fun time riding with you Chuck. Cant wait to come back, I think I'll bring the rg/rz and a blasphemous cb550 for cruising this year!
That was the day I met Chuck. I wanted work done on my RD and had no clue who to ask or what to do. When I saw him do that in the parking lot and if fried up on the first kick, then rode his bike... I know he was the real deal. My bike was at his shop a month later. Only took so long because I was waiting in SPEC2 for pipes.
My 400 won't be close to ready, but I'm going to try to make it out this year. I live too close to not make an effort to come. I'll be riding a blasphemous four stroke though.
a lot of us bring 4 strokes as well. I was on my cb1100 quite a bit last year. years before i had my ktm390 and also my ducati.
:cheerleader:
I'm a local but I still bring my bike on a trailer. I live 30 miles from the top of the hill in Tennessee. It takes a while to ride all the way up the Dragon from Hwy 411. Burns a half-tank one way.
Some people might like to ride an RD down from Canada. I personally would not...
Chuck and the gang can probably build a total basket-case in the parking lot. If you don't mind slightly inebriated people working on your bike...
We need something to do when we aren't riding. Other than drink and eat.
Trust me it's worth it for the camaraderie alone.
Plus if you need parts someone can bring them and there's a bike shop just down the other side in NC that has small items.
Best time I've had in a long while.

Ooooohhhhh. I thought it was "Irate Dater"! That makes more sense.
The 2 stroke guys always book all 14 rooms annually for the entire week!
ok... you lot have convinced me :)
I'll bring my CBR600F4i with me as well just in case I need it. They should both fit i the back of my truck no issue. I defo wont be driving a bike there! It's a 2 day drive for me from Ottawa up in canuckistan but Id rather take a week off and experience this than going to cuba again (although i find lying on a beach insanely relaxing).
Now... what are the chances of me getting one of the rooms in the bike motel where everyone stays? And if that isnt a possibility... where is the next best place to stay?
See the link Mark posted earlier in the thread. This is run by the Kawasaki triple forum.
The rooms sleep 3. But 2 beds are bunk beds. As far as I understand the rooms go quick. But you can camp on the lawn for a small fee. There are electrical outlets for campers if you pitch a tent. It's a pretty setting but rain is very likely in the region.
There are several other resorts/motels around the Tail of the Dragon. If you search online for that you can find a room if you book now. Other groups use the road too so the rooms need to be reserved in advance.
Last year I slept on a mattress in the back of my enclosed trailer. It was totally posh. Apparently the new owners don't really want this but nobody said anything.
2017 I slept in my car but that sucked. I was thinking I could go home at night but it just takes too damn long to go up and down the hill.
RV's are discouraged. I think actually they are allowed but they want like $50 a day and you can't use the electricity.
Really we are renting the whole resort so they are mostly pretty chill. The staff is really nice in my opinion.
There is a restaurant at the resort with beer that is open for breakfast and until 6pm. They have ice. There are barbecues and a fire pit. I usually bring about 20 lbs of BBQ done in my smoker at home, plenty of beer, and the locally favored beverage in East Tennessee.
IR8D8R
or, rent a house vrbo or rent a room at tapoco, fontana, or in Robbinsville. there no lack of accommodations. me? im sleeping in a tent or a trailer for a week, fuck that (for me). Those days are over for me unless i decide to pick up racing.
The rooms at the KTS site go BLINDINGLY fast, less than an hour when released usually. then it shuffles but you have to stay on it. :twocents:

YES please bring more of your BBQ! I would come just for that.
I have seen last year what your "locally favored beverage in East Tennessee" did so I will pass on that...
Paul,
I think you meant to say "pass out on that"...
Only the finest chicken-feed ingredients. I'm pretty sure there is a detectable amount of 2 stroke oil smoke in there too. It's probably what's responsible for the "special" flavor.

Got me so drunk I fell off my bike in the parking lot.
they try roping me in every year.

HOW THE HELL did I miss that one??? I need to pay more attn next time.
and Marc, I also am too smart for that. I know how to drink beer but that, nope.
thanks everyone... hopefully i can get my ass down there in may. I would be a great experience :)
so for a broke guy like me, how would one ensure a spot to camp at the gap? lol. would just be me, a tent, truck and bike. Also would need a hand loading and unloading the bike. Would pay in beers. :)
Just email them. they are likely closed for the winter and will not answer. I doubt there will be any issues. it is about 100 percent 2 strokes.
they charge only a few dollars for the hookup/camping. I have a motorcycle camper I may bring depending on rooms this year.
they also have a loading ramp to help with unloading but I am sure you will have 10 guys willing to help you.
https://www.dealsgap.com/
So do some of you guys go for the entire week as well?
I working on getting some time off work but am uncertain if they'll let me go for 2 weeks which i what I'd need because I'd need 2 days to get there in my truck. I'm thinking if getting away for 2 weeks isnt possible Id come for 4 days.
ive gone for the full week for at least 10 years.
ive been going so long, i actually look young here. :dawg: (my friend, who i actually just had dinner with, had lunched the middle cyl on this 380) man this had to be around 2001

ha ha good pic. I love the pics here of you guys dismantling bikes entirely right in the parking lot.
Im a developer for the fed gov up in canukistan and we are expecting a project to be in full swing so a week of is all I may get, and ask for really. I dont want to take off too long cause I'll only shoot myself in the foot at work disappearing too long. I'd love to be there for the whole week though.. would be such a nice break doing things that are right up my alley. I'm the only guy in my town that I am even aware of that's into old japanese two-strokes.
Is there an itinerary of any sort? A meeting to start things off or do I just show up and introduce myself?
just show up. theres guys that do organised, rides, cookouts, etc. I just play it by ear. Just show up, we are a friendly crowd.
The rooms were all spoken for in 12 minutes on the initial offering. There are usually some changes so keep a lookout at this thread on the Kaw Triple Board. http://kawi2strokes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=13989&start=10
Aright, I booked a cabin in Fontana from the 6th to 10th. Really looking forward to this :)
This is my ugly mug and I'll have a yellow 76 RD400 (and probably my black and red CBR600F4i) so if you see me meandering about say hi!
OK. Just stay on the paved roads and do not investigate banjo music in the woods. You should be fine... Best if you didn't stop in Kentucky. Them people ain't right.

Thats pretty funny IR8D8R,...I gotta remember that one!

you'll love it there. Ive rented cabins there, its nice. Keep in mind, its -mostly- a dry county for the most part, so if you want to have any beverage, better to bring with.
the ride down hwy28 to the hotel at the gap 'headquarters' is a great ride. Just watch for wild life. few years ago we had a run in with some (2) russian boar in the road and some other smaller rooting pigs(a pack of them actually). there have been bear sightings as well. But its rare.
Awesome, thanks again everyone.
I finally got all the parts for the bike and I will start tearing it down and rebuilding everything. I should have it up and running for may no problem. Running how well remains to be seen.
17 hour drive for me so I'll split it into 2 days driving and probably do a minimum of 12-14 hours the first day. Thankfully I like driving especially when there will be all new scenery for me. My plan is leave Ottawa 6am sharp and go straight to Roanoke, VA and pass the night there then it's only 4 or 5 hours the next day to Fontana.
Looking forward to getting there in may and meeting everyone and enjoying myself.

You might just be convincing me to make the 10 hour drive from Michigan. lol
10 hours aint too bad!
shit, barry is driving from colorado and aylor comes in from new mexico. :vroom: Theres more... trust me, its worth the trip.
500 miles door to door for me. I can do it in 8 hours towing 2 bikes and hauling 1. :righteous: :righteous:
I have only been one time and had to leave early but this will be a regular event. Group of good people and fun conversations.
plus unlimited great places to ride as a bonus.
Well I'll probably go from like Wednesday through Sunday. I was told they should have plenty of room to camp. So I'll tent it up and put the bike on my dirt bike hitch hauler.
One room is now available for next months meet. See other post in this section but you must act quick if you want it.
i'll be in room 2 sun thru wed.
see you there.
no you cant have any coffee. :dawg:
Come on man! :righteous: :patriot: You have the best java.
:dawg:
:celebrate:
Well fellas, unfortunately the bike wont be ready in time for me to go this year. Gonna camp up in the thumb instead. Maybe that'll distract me for a while. Not real happy about it, but it be what it be.
I might head up Friday the 21st. Are people still around at the end of the week/weekend?
usually yes, but its thinner. this year is an odd one so who knows. I prob will be gone by then. Usually i do 7 days.
Whenever you are in the area, check out Time Warp Tea Room on Central Ave. in Knoxville. On Tuesday evenings they have bike night, and the Time Warp Vintage Motorcycle Club wanders in to look at each other's rides and shoot the breeze. Bikes line up by the curb and up on the sidewalk. The place is all about vintage bikes and has them parked all over inside. Many 2 smokers there. No alky (bars are nearby) but great food and atmosphere and happy characters.
My pics from this year. excuse the clunky album page.

Looks like a lot of fun!
Nice pics...
I WILL make it there at some point. The stars wouldn't align for me this year. Next year?....
I recognize maybe Paul's 400, possibly the good Dr's 400, the gorgeous T500 and the psycho Grom.
Is that the two bikes you brought M?
paul and chuck were in the room next to mine. I brought the t500, the grom, and my buddys 75 rd which he rode when he got up on monday night.
Timmy, we missed you guys. and Demshock, sort of. :dawg:

Hey......wait.....what?.....sorta missed me? :umm:
Thanks
Demshock and me sorta missed you too.
We only have to wait 9 months for the next one. Bright side...
I only wrecked once with minor damage to my exhaust and a few bruises.
Sadly one death on the hill during the week (RIP Lisa Renee Green of Clanton, AL).
Overall a fairly good week on the Dragon. The company was the best part. All you guys were great to be around. A bit rainy but that's expected here.
I love the Foothills Parkway! Cherohala Skyway is awesome too! Already looking forward to May 2021!!

I didn't know you crashed. after i left i assume? hope all is ok.
next year i plan on bringing a big bike, the lightweight? and ? maybe the cr85 kawi g3? who knows.
Yes, 9 mos. :metal: :toot: :righteous:

We used to loose only about one a year on 129. Now it seems we loose one a month in the summer.
The foothills was super fun with you Andrew and Paul. Thanks again dude for having me. I'm planning some 17 in wheels for the gamma, 9 short months to go
Mark,
After you left yes. I was setting up for an inside curve going down the hill and my glove stuck to the throttle grip when I reached for the brake and blipped at the wrong time. It stood me up and I went straight into the ditch. Still getting used to the super sensitive throttle response of the FI bike. I was in "A" mode and it's worse on that setting. Somebody makes a progressive throttle mod to lessen the effect.
https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/g2-throttle-tamer-yamaha.
...I probably won't use it. Others have the same issue.
Yeah I was probably going too hard but I was having fun. I have been using Nike 'Barry Bonds' batting gloves because I like the feel and fit. They are super grippy and so are the handgrips. What I needed at that moment was slip not grip. Probably I should get purpose motorcycle gloves.
The ditch fortunately was lined with duff, leaves, rotten wood, and not rocks. I stayed in the seat until it stopped so the bike doesn't have a scratch except for a dent in the header. I got very lucky. Kept riding...
IR8D8R
Thanks to covid my big plans to drive down from Ottawa, Canada to meet everyone in NC got cancelled.... and I didnt have any hopes for this year either but now that it looks like the dems are getting in I suspect covoid will cease be the end of the world and the border will reopen.... fingers crossed I get to come and meet you all in May 2021. I recently bought a Palomino 1251 truck camper so I'm all set!
Anyone on here going this year?
we booked a house, all week as per usual. as it tim and a few others.
I JUST texted Chuck to see if he is in on sharing a room again. If he is I am coming and staying again for sure. If not, I am still coming up for sure just not sure where I will stay.
Last year my wife and I came up 2 weeks after the last meet with the Goldwing AND my RD. We stayed at the Fontana resort. After riding all day with her I would go out right before dusk and no one was on the roads. Best riding on the gap ever.
Hello guys, AJ here. I was thinking about going again this year, but I left my very old visa expire early last year. Right now the US embassy here in Brazil is working at a snail's pace because of covid. I don't think I'll be able to get my visa renewed in time. All you guys have a great time there!!
Hi AJ! Was nice meeting and talking with you at the Gap 2 years ago. Hope you are doing well.
whats up AJ! hope you can make it, we met last time as well. :vroom:
Good to see you posting AJ!
Hope all you guys are doing very very well!! I constantly remember all the great conversations we had at the meet.
I haven't done any air travel last year, I can't even imagine the craze it must be right now on the airports and places with a lot of people. Unfortunately my Visa will probably require an interview, because I forgot about it for almost a year now. All the USA embassies here were always very busy before covid, sometimes you had to book 3 months in advance. I don't know if I'll be able to get it done in time for the meet.
here's hoping. good luck!
AJ, I used to work with students from all over the world. The best advice you can get is #1 DON'T USE AN AGENT!!! They will just take your money. #2 Go on the US consulate web site for your country and follow their instructions to the letter. Re-read the instructions (they change from time to time). Having a COVID vaccine is probably going to be required. Would love to see you here this year. I live about an hour's ride from 129.
we'll be there.
Im combining this with the other gap thread.
FWIW, i'll be renting a cabin at Fontana Village (not staying at base camp)
Tick Tock!
I am ready. My bikes are not. But they will be.
Well.... maybe not for me. my bikes on the wire already lol
FYI, there is an indoor car and motorcycle show May 8th in Knoxville if anyone hangs around.
Long time no chat...
Looks like I had to miss the DealsGapp gathering for 2021 as well thanks to covoid. Thats 2 in a row now :bang:
The plan now is 2022.... I have purchased a truck camper now as well so I should be all set to go unless, of course, they decide that the evil variants will continue to destroy economy after economy. Fingers crossed! Really hoping to come meet ya all.
Don't know if any of you met up with Warner Brannon (on left) at the Gap while there. He was a regular. I sat with him Tuesday at the Time Warp. He did his final lap on the Dragon, Friday around noon. Details are still unknown. A positive, supportive gentleman who will be missed, but left great memories.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211226/f5ad36dba8ac503cfe4a96b74852bd37.jpg)
