did this yesterday and the day before. for anyone familiar with FPP's, great pipes, but the early ones like to launch the spun aluminum silencers. the aluminum is very soft and the clamp method really just doesnt cut it.
these came up to buy, and i grabbed them. I figured worst case, would put on some tyga silencers but decided to try to save the cans. I'm by NO MEANS a great aluminum welder, and the 2 different grades of aluminum were.. tricky-- to get together especially since the cans were dirty metal.
the sleeve i made is actually a hydraulic filter body (we sell these at work). these are old leftovers from the old cnc machine from work that are sort of everywhere around there
the ID is 1.125", and the narrow part is 25.5mm. I modified them to make stronger ends for the cans, and to thread in some bolts to use for the springs (for a KTM). they are really strong, waiting on the other 2 but it basically doubled the engagement on the stinger. I also shortened the body of the filter by about 52mm.
you cna see one of the can ends was pretty mangled when i got it, i heated it up and straightened it out w a torch and mandrel (socket) before making the new sleeves.
the bolts do NOT act as set screws, but could.
now i need to get the pipes cleaned up and these are bound for the 72 R5. :toot:
That'll do nicely
Excellent :patriot: :patriot:
 doesn't look like that's going anywhere now
Nifty! Nice work! Are FPP pipes worth saving? I have a newer set for my RD400. Pipe tore open around the mount and needs welding.
IMHO, yes hey are very close in performance on a stock-ish motor to tapered head pipe specII's
Nice work!
Uh oh...
These have survived on two different RDs for the last 40 years or so.
However, I might have to get creative.
ive launched them, and also ride my bikes almost every day. (well not this time of year). i mean, FPP changed the design themselves... there was a reason.
Cool project. Be sure to post the final product. I love seeing things come back to life.

Sounds great! You definitely made an improvement to the stock silencer mount (understatement...)
I have some questions though:
Are the stingers as short as the visible part, or do they extend into the chambers?
And, did Spec 2 pipes come with both straight and tapered headers? If so, was that the only difference between them? And how much difference would tapered vs straight headers make?
as far as the pipes/stingers, they were about 2~2.25" long total, ID of 23.5mm. they did NOT go into the belly of the pipe. the stinger went into the can a bit over 1" and the can + stinger length (also with an ID of 23.5mm), total, is about 15"~15.25".
yes, specII pipes came with both straight, early, then later tapered head pipes. I've run both, the tapered headpipes def improves midrange transfer, the 'hit' isn't as abrupt. i havent measured them pipe to pipe but otherwise, i think thats the only main difference
Did you get the dents out of the silencers?
nope not yet.. might not.. but will try. torch and a mandrel and a light hammer
Mark I have two new unmolested FPP silencer canisters if needed. CHEAP.
I appreciate it. but i already have these modded up. are they the small bodied ones or the later large bodied ones? if smaller, may be interested.

PO of my FPPs dropped his Daytona off the lift and dented the can with the axle/nut.
He took a large socket that fit in there pretty close and hammered it through. Came out satisfactory. There's a little bulge where it wandered a little sideways.
ones I have are large diameter.
ah. i appreciate it.
have a few sets of these on the way, impossible to find so i reproduced them on the computer. yeah, they are actually supposed to look that janky on the font. lol.

:metal: :metal:
pipes are cleaned up and painted as well. a few dings down low where you really cant see them don't bother me so i just left them.
luckily the rust was all surface and really didn't pit the metal.
sand paper 1st (150 git on emery cloth type paper, light), then wire wheel on a drill and then laquer thinner. literally took 45 mins to do both, maybe.

cans cleaned up waiting for final cleanup and then clearcoat.

Oh! I'd better get off my dead ass and get out to the garage, then! Thanks for the reminder, and the FPPs look great
and done. (except the can decals)
Very nice!
 Excellent!
That is such a well done, nice clean bike !! That may be the next one I do, as I have that bikes twin sitting in my shed (sadly for like the last 10 years or so) I even have a set of FPP pipes hanging in shed, but they look like they were thrown off a cliff, not sure if I can bring them back.
I appreciate that. :gentleman:
from this morning. raining today but did take it out last night, needed to raise the rev limiter a bit.
Looks and sounds good.
Oh yeah is that the bike you considered selling this past August?...I have to say I like the R5 better than the RD's. Just the styling, aesthetics of the meters, tank, cases, gas cap. I wouldn't know the difference in gears or performance. They're all pretty rare where I live which is a bummer for me. I wish I had more like minded folks locally. Then I'd probably have a small fleet of RD's myself.
yup. thats the one. thanks!
its an rd motor, its had an rd lower end w a 6 speed for the past 15 yrs, and i added the reeded top end last year. also, w the disc front end, its virtually otherwise mechanically identical to an rd350. I agree, they are prettier.. to the point both my actual rd's don't have remotely stock bodywork. But the 2 r5s have stock paint/bodywork.
Just outta curiosity I keep wondering if the r5 was ever used in a Hollywood movie?...I keep thinking of this movie I saw many many years ago it was a sort of biography of Bruce Lee and I swear I thought he was riding one or maybe it was at least a 70's era Yamaha.

In the opening few minutes of 'On Any Sunday' there is a guy in a suit riding a white and gold DS7. And in the Amazon series 'Wayne', the main characters head from Boston to Ocala, Fl on what looks like an R5 or DS7. although it is a bit of a bodge bike as the sidecovers look to be off a different bike.
@ drew, thats an RD200 actually in 'wayne' which makes it even more ridiculous.
Your pipes sound great, nice fab work. :clint:
^ thank you very much!
Decals finally came in, really happy with them. I reproduced these off a picture so they may not be 100% but good enough for me :)
Min order required me to get like 12 sets. lol. but was pretty cheap overall.

Those look good! Who did you use? I was looking for someone to possibly reproduce a NLA decal.
thanks Russ. :gentleman:
well, i did the linework and sent the vector file & a pdf. It was a place online, stickerapp.
Those turned out great!  :bacon:
Damn I should get another R5. Marc what kind of shocks are those?
thx
They are actually 2015? ish take off new yamaha SR400 shocks. I just added the ring below for some color goofing around one night off a set of cheap RFY's i had laying around. I do have a set of progressives but TBH, these work pretty well.
You sure about that phone number?
Factory Pipe Products is, and was located about 100mi north of San Francisco, in Ukiah, CA.
Should be 707 area code. 🤷🏻♂️

Yup. I'm sure that's what i intended. :clownshoes: :dawg:

That really is a really nice looking R5.
thanks guys. it's really nothing too terribly special but its a solid rider. since no one bought it it just keeps getting nicer parts thrown at it when i'm bored. lol. i am -really- happy with the texavina seat on it . the FPPs were a spur of the moment opportunity... so i bit. This is the down side / up-side of not having a big project taking up shop space or budget
Your can's exits look a lot different than my early FPP's. Unless there's a trim cap I'm missing
Mark's stickers came out nearly indistinguishable from the originals.
You almost never see these cans with the stickers intact. Probably because they keep falling off and get torn up.
IR8D8R
Those decals came out great, if you still have extra I'd buy a set or two.
I tried the same process when I put smaller cans on my JLs but the site I went through to copy the sticker didn't end up well. And I think I had to by 30 sets... :haw:
IR8D8R, your snap ring fixed guts in the FPP can is actually much easier than the factory original. The end cap is fixed in with a wire, which is HARD to fish out. Steel wire in a groove that has to be pulled/scraped out against aluminum. Makes one wonder how many more times it will hold.
Rather than trust the hose clamps to hold the cans on, I rigged up a spring kit with rivets yesterday. Gonna see how well that does. Stickers from Mark made me realize how valuable the cans are. No way I want to lose them on the road now:
looks great steve :vroom: :toot:
Wife spotted that polished stainless band material in a 30 ft roll at the Amazon bin store. I would have walked right past it. It is excellent for this spring application. Have plenty extra, of course.
Yoshimura spring :burnout:
steves fancy like that. :gentleman:
Yoshi is very good to order from direct.
Got springs, spring puller tool and a couple of their stickers.
All packaged in cool individual logo'd parts zip lock bags which come in handy later
I've been wondering what cans would be best to replace these with if you had to. The stinger is partially in the can originally so I presume that you should try to match that length? Then you'd need to weld on a longer stinger of similar length to other pipes to use a slip-on can? Or would it make a difference?
IR8D8R
I wasn't sure i was going to be able to save mine.. if not, was going to go with Tyga cans. it requires the 3 bolt flange to be welded on the stinger, but thats no big deal. here's a link to the page and some screenshots below. lots of options.
