Turning Wrenches / firing on one
May 21, 2020, 07:30:15 AM
folks,
solve one problem and......
rd/lc hybrid engine. starts on right hand cylinder only. nothing at all from the left. swapped the orange coil wires over and the plug leads and the problem stays on the same side.
I assume that this test absolutely rules anything electrical out, I have swapped the plugs over as well.
so I am thinking to start looking at the carb, however the plug is always wet.
any ideas??
thanks

Lads!

sussed it. replaced the points and condenser, points were not that bad, so cudos to barrie. started third kick and first thereafter.

so, so summarise, what can appear to be a flooding problem at starting, can indeed be an electrical problem.

cheers for all the help, on to one of my other three projects now.

hi,

if it was me, firstly I would try standing the carb on four nuts, one in each corner and give the top a "slight press" whilst protected with wood. you might see it straighted out enough to seal with a good gasket. its bin fodder anyway!.

hi again,

I have new points and condenser to go in,  but have lost my flywheel puller, so I am waiting for a new one to arrive and will post the result soon enough. I really hope it is one of the two.

cheers folks

I will persist in solving this problem, and then I will post what it was, as I don't think that happens enough, threads just seem to run dry and leave me wondering what cure was!

cheers for now

Dvsrd,

I will check the magnets when I pull the flywheel to fit the points/condenser. yes, it is just a one wire ignition. how do they re-magnetise them??

such a simple engine, I cannot believe that I cannot find what the problem is, I will end up changing the whole engine!

Me again,

definitely not fuel leaking into crank case, drained, stripped, tested everything, filled with fresh fuel. exactly same problem. tried a brand new coil, still the same.
I am now going to replace the points and condenser, and while the flywheel is off, I will have a look at that too.

I am hoping that a weak spark can appear as flooding.

if you look on the last pic of the ebay ad that I attached, they are about the same.

dvsrd,

its not a new pad, it came to me with used pads and I have no idea what the measurement of a new one would be, however its got about 3/4mm on it, so its not far off.

dvsrd,

just putting a dt400 engine in a tdr125, I have the caliper  in my hand. it has a twin sliding front caliper, on the left. measuring from the surface of the rear (pulled) brake pad to the rear of the caliper is approx. 25mm.

might help

Turning Wrenches / dt250mx poor starting
April 22, 2020, 02:50:54 PM
Good day folks,

question on my dt250mx. recon engine, good compression etc.

starting from cold with or without choke, it will fire ONCE and then appear to flood. if I remove and dry the plug it will repeat the same fire once. I can start it by bumping and it will run very well after that.

I have changed the carb for a brand new one, and messed with jetting/mixtures, same problem.

so my question is this. could a weak spark get flooded out and then fail and appear to be caused by flooding. if so I will start replacing electrical parts one by one.

any advice appreciated.
thanks and stay safe folks.
