Fired up ol' Rusty and his oil pump has started clicking. Anybody know what causes that? Smokes more since it started clicking. I wanna ride! :bang: :taz:
Every day above ground is a good one.

At idle does the shaft come back to rest? It should just barely be moving at idle. They get hung up sometimes, especially if your spring is stuck or if the seals are fresh and not bedded in.

It does. If I turn the cable wheel manually, the plunger moves a lot, like it should. It's not a loud noise; maybe I just noticed it.  I don't think it was happening the last time I rode it.
Should I pull it and check the output so my engine doesn't break?

Yep that's abnormal. Manually spin the wheel and see if it still does it.
Do not underestimate the power of a two-stroke.

It does. So if it clicks with wheel then it's the pump, if not then the drive gear? Wonder why it clicks. Guess I'll have a look-see!

has the pump been rebuilt? if so the main ring gear might be backwards. I cant say as ive ever heard one click before.

Greaser Greg

Not rebuilt by me. Didn't click when tested before running engine. Clicks when spun with wheel, about one click every quarter turn, roughly.  I'll find the pump thread and check it out. Stay tuned!

I don't know if he still is but he was a member on the rd/rz 350 site. He is the master for auto lube pumps

R5's,and 350's and the first year '76 400 did click some due to the spring pin arrangement to be able to have the prime wheel. Works like a one way clutch.
Later 400's and LC/RZ came with no prime wheel, omitted the spring pins and went to a fixed pin config and don't click.

I rebuild them all the time, see my testing video here...
