General Chatter / Chamberlain 8 2 stroke Race Car
May 13, 2020, 09:33:56 AM
http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-chamberlain-8-2-stroke-4-cylinder-8.html

This thing is kinda wild.  I came across this because someone posted about it in a Facebook group the other day.  It's a 4 cylinder, 8 piston engine!  The 2nd set of pistons are smaller and I believe control the ports opening and closing.  You need to play the video clip on this page too.  Truly the sounds of Hell!

I was born in a crossfire hurricane!  Wait, what are we talking about again?  Oh yeah, I bought a '71 G3SS the other day!  I actually didn't pay any money for it, I traded the guys some bike parts and 7.62x39 ammo.  This will be my wife's bike if she sticks with riding when she learns, but I still plan to ride it.  I found out from the owner (who was a young guy, probably 19-20) that his grandmother bought it new in '71!  I love those stories, it gives the bike more character to me.  Some parts are in incredible condition.  The chrome on the exhaust is very nice.  Other stuff needs replacing.  Almost 50 year old rubber is pretty stiff.  There does seem to be plenty of NOS parts on eBay.  I'll find out how stiff packaged 50 year old rubber is I guess.  I'll keep my expectations low.  The PO was cafe-ing it, which I'll continue, but cleaner.  There's some decent stuff done to it, but the seat mount is about as bad as I've ever seen.  I can use what he started, the welds look fine.  The real score is the fibreglass TD3 replica seat that came with it!  It's mostly disassembled, appears to be missing a ton of hardware.  This won't be a complete rebuild.  I'll touch up the frame paint, make sure it's mechanically sound and let 'er rip!  I got it to run yesterday, the top end was just rebuilt, but I still need to check ring end gap and all that.

General Chatter / Paint Stripping Options
January 31, 2020, 10:49:39 AM
I've always used Rustoleum Aircraft Remover.  While highly caustic, it's worked great.  My last jug of it has lost it's effectiveness.  I can't find it sold anywhere.  Only non-methylene chloride strippers.  The Kleen Strip one won't even touch the RD's frame paint.  I just found out that last year the EPA (here in the US) banned methylene chloride.  What do I do now?  Are there other strippers that I can buy locally?  Am I stuck ordering online, something like MEK?  Thanks in advance!

Not mine.  It's intriguing.  I'd probably go look at it if I didn't already have too many unfinished projects.

Turning Wrenches / S&W Shocks for RD?
December 17, 2019, 01:31:42 PM
I'm looking at a used set of S&W rear shocks for a good price.  Anyone know anything about them?  From what I read online S&W became Progressive Suspension.  I'll be doing street riding.  I'm not looking for the best shocks available, just something that's an upgrade over my clapped out stockers for the RD400 I'm rebuilding.  Also, from what I understand, these older shocks aren't rebuildable.  Is that accurate?  Thanks!

Turning Wrenches / Bore Gauge Options
November 23, 2019, 07:30:13 PM
I'm looking for some direction on getting a bore gauge that's not Chinese junk, but isn't a $1,000+ Sunnen gauge.  I know that if I wanted the best performance out of the engine, I should send it to one of the pros here.  I want to learn though.  I've been looking on eBay for used gauges, because anything I can afford new seems shoddy.  I already picked up a Starrett micrometer.  Short of scoring a Sunnen or Mititoyo gauge, what are some quality gauges to look for?  Am I correct in thinking I need a gauge that's in .0001" increments to get good cylinder bore readings?

I'm looking at a Yuasa gauge right now.  I know they make quality batteries.  Anyone know anything about their gauges?  I can't find much of anything online.  Thanks in advance!

Turning Wrenches / RD Fork Damper Holding Tool?
November 10, 2019, 11:20:36 AM
I'm pulling apart my RD400 forks.  When I've rebuilt previous damper style forks, I'm able to get the damper loose using an impact gun.  Not so, this time.  I'm looking for some direction on how to make a damper holding tool.  Looking at them from the top through the form tubes, there doesn't appear to be a slot to lock into.  Thanks in advance!

Turning Wrenches / FZR Front End Swap?
October 22, 2019, 10:45:57 PM
So I was always planning on rebuilding the stock forks on my RD400 with Race Tech springs.  There's an 89 FZR-1000 rolling chassis available in my area for very cheap.  Would the FZR forks be a considerable upgrade over the stock RD forks?  Anything I should consider before picking it up?  I know the forks are 43mm, so I'd need to use the triple clamps from the FZR.  I'd like to keep the 400 wheels.  I'll be using a blue dot caliper on the front.  Anything I need to be aware of?  I'm sure this swap has been done before.  Thanks!

I'd go look at it, but I have too many unfinished projects.  I need to get the RD400C and '96 CR125 close to done before bringing another home.

Haus of Projects / Chef Boy-RD400 Project
May 13, 2019, 10:38:10 PM
So this is my attempt to salvage what little there was of my build thread from the old site.  There was a bit of advice given, so I will add that in here and do my best to credit the poster as I go.  This is partially for my own reference and anyone else searching in the future.

In December 2016, I bought this 1976 RD400C.  The previous owner said that it ran, but sat for something like a year.  It wouldn't start when I went to look at it though.  I got him to throw in some NOS seals and such.  Some of these I may not use because of age though.  When I got it home and cleaned the carbs it fired up.  The tires are dry rotted.  The rear brake is frozen.  Rust in the fuel tank.  This thing needs work.  I'll be ditching those cheapo pod filters for UNI foam filters with the stock boots.  According to Chuck Quenzler, those are old DG chambers on it.  I'll be running those, although they'll get repainted and I'll attempt to pop out some of the dents.  Most of the chrome is pitted.  Just about everything needs to either be painted or cleaned and polished in the case of some of the aluminum.

I'll update this thread again soon with the pictures to catch up to where it is right now.  I haven't worked on it as much as I'd like because my wife had a baby not long after I bought it.  I'm hoping to get more done on it this year.  Thanks for following along!
