Turning Wrenches / R5B assembly question
September 27, 2019, 12:29:35 PM
In the various manuals I have there is a kickstart mechanism diagram and the part #12 washer doesn't seem to me to have a reason to be there. My guess is that it might protect the seal from the snap ring but there doesn't seem to be a way for them to make contact. Anybody know what the washer does?  Tried to add a pic but my files are too big and this old iPad won't let me adjust them.

I'm guessing by the lack of responses to my post in the eBay/craigslist section that $1000 for a non-running r5 or   ds7 is too much. Unless they are really nice, i think that's a lot. After an engine overhaul etc I'm thinking another grand to get it right, unless the cranks are fine, then $500 or so for miscellany and resell for $2-3k? Am I living I a fantasy world? I got my basket case for $100 and it's pretty rough. Had the crank done and bought pistons and rings and seals/gaskets and a bunch of other stuff so have some idea of the cost to get these going properly.  Is a decent looking stocker with rebuilt engine gonna sell for $2500?

These are close to me. If anyone wants to go in on them I can pick them up.

Turning Wrenches / Input shaft bearing placement
April 25, 2019, 11:32:21 PM
Is it ok to have the trans input shaft bearing on the points side an eighth  inch inside the outer case edge? When it is flush, the gear on the outer end of the input shaft rubs the case and shaves the metal. Seems like a lot of lateral play on both shafts anyway; is that normal?

Any one done it?
Results?

Haus of Projects / 71 yamaha R5

This is the way these cases looked when opened and disassembled, minus the piles of rust between the bearings.  I'm glad I didn't make it run like that when it was together.  That rusty bearing does not turn.

Turning Wrenches / R5B piston styles
February 28, 2019, 05:54:13 PM
Are there two different, or more styles of stock r5 Pistons? I don't know how to reduce file size to post pics. The Pistons I received from eBay are different in that the crown of the piston is recessed to expose more of the first ring land, and the lands are both farther up. The ring will be exposed to combustion with just enough piston to hold it in the groove. Is this the right piston?  Same in other aspects.
