Really cool bikes but dang are they expensive. Even if you found a "project" bike the cost of parts is out of my budget. I'd like to ride one for the experience but don't see myself ever owning one. Cool piece of 2T history.

The RZ500 is the epitome of Yamaha 2 stroke cool! ( next to a TZ700/750) I have had some seat time with one and while it is cool, I like my RZ350 better. And yes you will have 3 times the cost of a 350 in a 500. So in my book the 350 is more bang for the buck. But the 500 will draw more of a crowd when you pull into your local haunt.

Whenever I get nostalgic about the 500 I remember my talks with the old racers.  They would easily agree the 350 was a much better bike.

That 500 motor is amazing and is very neat+original but the riding setup on those bikes was terrible.  One of the few bikes out that there would feel twitchy yet refuse to go around corners.

NS400R was another dissapointment.  Had 3 and would rather have my RZs.  I ultimately found hte TZR250s were the most fun i've ridden so far.

I've never even had a go on a TZR250, but know lots of people who have. Never heard a single bad word about them. Great bikes by all accounts.
First production bike to be 200 bhp/litre.

My son had an RZ500 for a while and tried really hard to like it, but the handling sucked, brakes were so-so and power was lacking.  He sold a 120hp 900, so that was understandable. It was hard to get them to make much more power but a guy in Australia Russel Malley IIRC did a sterling job of letting a lot more ponies out of the stable.

I did borrow a friend's NSR400 for a weekend and it was a lot of fun to ride around winding country roads and infinitely better than the garage load of RD400s we had back then but it was too smooth and needed a few more horses to make it interesting. I am glad I had a chance to ride it but don't regret not buying it.

The RG500 is much better street and otherwise, power and handling. The flywheel on the RZ makes you have to rev and slip from a stop. Ironically I think Yamaha did it too make more street friendly.

It's true, the 91+ v-twin TZR250 is the best of them all.

I very much regret selling mine, and just don't see being able to afford another.

Certainly, a well set up RG500 with modern suspension would be the holy grail, but at $20k+ they're a little out of reach for the average guy.

I also got to ride a NS400R for a quick spin. I thought my RZ was faster.....

OK, I'll be content with my RZ and maybe leave a little inheritance for the kids.
