Classic '80's RD400.
Needs fork air caps.
It's true. Shocks are too modern, and also needs crappy steel rearsets and Dunlop K591's to be proper 80's.
Regardless, that switchgear wiring routing is giving my OCD a tic.
The auto-parts store coils on the downtubes was a common mod long ago, wasn't it?

And then I read another thread which referred to Oregon Motorcycle Products and found the answer to my question. Apparently it is still done!

Here is a 80's classic, complete with NASA approved made or whatever it was oil cooler dipstick. --- (https://i.imgur.com/z50GkuV.jpg) --- (https://i.imgur.com/nIgxM8b.jpg)
I dig that completely useless front fender. It doesn't look strong enough to count as a fork stay. Lets call it a "water separator".

the seat on this was a shorty one that i added the fiberglass 'nose' to on the front. was on stock mounts with a subframe under the 'glass, worked pretty well actually. Not cushy like that 400 though.
I bought those coils at Discount Auto Parts in Niceville, FL.

yes, sort of...actually, you bought 1 in the pic. the other one got replaced that 2nd day after it shorted in the rain that night before. I bought the replacement from what is now that hellbender gas station at fontana. that year it was still a repair shop, and the tech had a boat with (of all things) a 460 ford motor in it, he sold me the coil off that for like 15 bucks.

Strategically cut the part that would keep water from spraying in their face.
on that 400, note the reverse style silencers on the fpp's
I didn't member the rain incident until now.
2003 was 17 years ago? Ha! Love the classic pics.
The yellow 400 in ebay/cl reminded me of something I thought about a few days ago. At earlier time powder blue must have been quite a fad, I don't know how many I've seen over the years with engines, side covers even jugs, heads (as in this) etc. some or all these. --- https://www.ebay.com/itm/73-74-75-YAMAHA-RD350-6-SPEED-ENGINE-MOTOR-REPUTABLE-SELLER-VIDEO-SIX-GEARS/254534187128?hash=item3b436b7878:g:rYQAAOSwC4xeZAZA
