Title: Need verification for Supertune jetting on stock RD400C
Post by: gardenhosebusabottle on June 28, 2023, 11:55:33 AM
Current jetting:  130 main jet, 175-P2 needle jet, 5L1 needles on 2nd clip from top, #30 pilot @ 1-1/2 turns out. Timing @ 2.0 BTDC w/ zenon strobe. 92 octane non-ethanol gas. stock airjets w/ brass plugs removed.  Airlines removed from the top of airbox and hanging in the breeze.  both carbs have drain lines hooked up (side & bottom of carbs) and routed w/ crank case breather line to back of motor.

Anyway, can anyone verify if this is the current correct info for stock bike carb tune on crap gas??

Setup:  Stock pipes, Uni filter in stock airbox, banshee intake manifolds w/ banshee crossover tube, YZ reeds, XR700 ignition (Crane Cams)

It is so easy to miss the "tiny" details in a post.   Previously, I had the bike jetted w/ a 145 main jet, 175-P4 needle jet, middle clip, 27.5 pilot....if i would have read the old post from 2020 closer, it was for a stock bike w/ DG pipes.  With this setup, the midrange had phlegm past 1/4 throttle.  God help you if you got above 50mph or freeway riding.

When mine was bone stock with the same airfilter, 130 main 32.5 pilot.

Thanks Scully.  Supertune did mention between a #30 and #32.5 pilot.

What needle clip position were you @ and airscrew settings?

The less i have to fiddle about, the better!!!!

Note: I believe the pistons are banshee Vertex.  Local guy/ ex-racer Charlie Brown re-built motor....good thing i did a pressure test, the left side seal, although new, was cracked and leaking!

funny thing.....don't run a bike for a couple years and then put it back together w/ a dried out oil pump.  I synch everthing before the maiden voyage around the block.  after the first ride, the oil pump was now off 1/4" and the gap was too narrow after I come back and re-check it the next day.  Gap is now a comfortable .009 and lined up w/ the mark @ WFO.  I did properly bleed the main oil lines and injector lines to carb before trip to get all the air out.

I kept needle in mid position and if I remember right about 1 turn out on Air screw. besides surging a bit on decel ran great. switched to chambers and 145 mains and god rid of the surge and runs even better :)

oh and running the yamalube injector oil....would have liked redline race (nice smell), but too DAMN expensive.

Ok....always better to start out richer.  I'll try the stock clip and 1.0 turns.  I was like gritting my teeth w/ 2nd clip position....as in "seizure later"....i could just see it coming down from a freeway run and then it "pulls the elephant".

REGARDING CHAMBERS:  Indeed, but this is my GF's bike.  So she likes it stock.  I'd probably do the full Dave Freist mod w/ chambers.   I did do a mild port on the reed cage for smoother flow from the crossovers at top...helped w/ my old bike.

Clip and airscrew are going to be something that should be fine-tuned for each bike and location.

Thanks SoCal:

Temps in the high 70s to low 80s right now.  What sucks is the johnston ridge side of Mt. Saint helens is shut down.  The other side has a bumpass road and some of it fell off, big chunk.   Detroit, OR is still blocked off from that big fire from awhile back.

the good news is Carson, WA to Cougar and back to Battle Ground, WA is good and OR35 to Mt. Hood is fun too.  Might also try Alsea Highway in OR if funds permit.

You guys would LOVE the backside of McClellan Viewpoint.  super twisty nice pavement.  haven't seen a sasquatch yet.  Old man pass, Wind River road....sounds good...and it IS!!!  Going up is a dream...better be on your toes going down...things happen fast!

Saw that you have a crane and realized I have your old bike.

Shy town!  You ride that 350 and then ride a modern bike.  It's like going from a Ford Model "A" to a Tesla Model 3...:)

Yeah, the GF wanted the 400 running (lighter), so now I'm back to fiddling about.  Tried 3rd clip...too me, more smoke and Not really crazy about the idle on the stand....read: seems a bit rich.

I'll try it, if it burbles, back to 2nd clip from top.

The best part about this being my first bike, nothing to compare to. Granted, I have ridden a few newer bikes, but that was years ago, and my memory is shot. :umm:

My 1st was a Yamaha 1972 R5.  Orange and black, w/ factory pipes....thing hit 120 back in the day.

Jetting Update:  Bike likes 1-1/2 turns w/ the 30 pilot.  Middle clip below 50 mph feels pretty good.  Much better w/ the 130 main jet.

Won't really know about the clip until i get up to highway speeds, but didn't feel any burbling Like i did w/ the 145 main.

I taped off the throttel in 4 increments, so will be watching that...comes out to almost 10mm a per quarter turn.

Will update.

I R DUN.

Bike runs very well now.  So:  130 main, 175-P2 on middle clip, #30 pilot @ 1-1/2 turns.  Not many two strokes around heeyah.  People notice them quick like (old peoples that is).

Guess I need to go to Big Bone Lick State Park. Where's that pic @ Mark?  :humpty:

anyway, everywhere I went ye ole guys were coming up to me in P'ups and Howlies...eyeah bouy!

Judy's gonna have fun on this motor.   :celebrate:

Thanks for the help guys!

If you decide to do the Alsea highway don't skip Marys Peak its a nice ride to the top and a great view of the valley.
