Title: Tech tip: fuel scent as a diagnostic tool (crank seals)
Post by: m in sc on June 03, 2024, 04:06:05 PM
was discussing a potentially blown inner crank seal with a non forum member and suggested throwing some grape fuel scent in the transmission to verify the inner seal had gone south on his GT500. (i knew it was dead by the video he sent, but he wanted verification). Suggested he pick some up, he put some in the transmission and lo and behold, left pipe started smelling like a grape pospicle. yes, suzuki 500 twin middle bearings are lubricated by the transmission oil. (and i think GT750 ones as well)

So, if in doubts.. and this really only applies to the RH seal on a yamaha for us RD folks, its a quick and undeniable way to verify its cryin time.
