Let's say its 80 degrees outside, or whatever. How long do you all let your bikes warm up before taking off?
On another note, haven't ridden bike in 6 weeks, selling house, moving, etc... how long is premix good for? I rode it today for a bit, finally in the burbs where there isn't a stop sign or light every fing block. I basically kicked her over, waited 15 secs and took off. Ran light shit the first couple minutes, then got better. But still wasn't what I remember 6 weeks ago. Is it the premix?
The neighbors on both sides are both retired, I know they are thinking with my 4x4, my sports car with loud exhaust and the RD... who in the hell moved in next door. lol. And for the love of God, he isn't going to really hook up those Cerwin Vega D9's in that garage, is he?
Thx.
5 mins or so minimally after it has sat. break in your neighbors now.
Oh wow, then that explains it. 15 secs isn't going to cut it.
I take right off after starting mine, but it is barely off idle going putt-putt. After about 2 minutes the cylinder head temperature gauges are up above 160. I also used non ethanol premix that was 6 months old and nothing blew up or seized.
heres why i warm it up that long aside from obvious reasons.. if there's any fuel or oil settled in the crankcases, this will give it time to burn off a bit more. also, get a little heat into the pistons. whys everyone in such a hurry? lol.
what oil are you running in that pre-mix? Do you put any Stabil or similar in if you know it won't all be used up for some time? I've read reports pump gas starts to break down in ~ 2 weeks. I know pre-mix also separates from sitting and needs to be shook up for later use. I've run everything from cheap Wal-mart Multipurpose 2-stroke outboard oil (TC-3 I think is minimal standard IIRC) to Lucas, Yamalube, Klotz and other synthetics and castor in my dirt bikes. Pump gas to VP110 race gas for VMX races and normally end up with leftovers that sit. I add Stabil if I know it won't be run for a couple weeks and shake it up good before each use. Seems fine in my older bikes for trail riding and never had a failure, but a lot more smoke and wet plugs. Careful if you have Castor or blended castor sitting in your bike. I recently had a couple badly gunked up carbs and wonky petcocks from old race gas using Klotz/Castor blend sitting over the Winter. ALL my leftovers routinely become parts cleaning use only after 3-6 months no matter the gas used.
ive had premix bikes sit 6 mos and fire right up no issues, but i tend to run honda GN2. :twocents:
In my experience pre-mix has a much longer shelf life and doesn't breakdown as quickly as straight up gas. (I use Motul 710). Our crappy gas (if you can even call it that) here in CA goes go bad very quickly. I have made a habit of shutting off the fuel around the corner when returning from a ride so it runs out of gas in the driveway, and the the carb bowls are empty when parked (regardless of how long the bike is going to sit).
not empty, just empty to the pilot jet height(for the most part). .02
folks,
in ireland now we have e10 and i premix all of my two strokes, i never have a problem with them starting after sitting all winter (six months here). i also turn off the fuel and let it run down a bit, though not to empty carb as i fear some "cystalisation" might block a jet next time.
i was told that premix will keep an oily film on the surface of the fuel in the tank and stop moisture absorption into the e10, would be nice if it were true!
cheers
les.
Same here. Premix seems to last a long time for me. I use Motul 710 like SoCal mentions. My local US Gas has ethanol free. Once I do my heads and cylinders this fall I will probably start tuning on the ethanol free.
That said, 80 and up I don't warm up much. Below like 60 I let it idle for a while.
