Thinking hard about buying this RG400.
Very nice visual condition. Allegedly runs well with no issues. 25,000km on the clock. 60hp in stock trim.
Half the price of a well sorted RG500.
Talk me into/out of it.

Not sure how rare they are or how hard it would be to source parts but I personally have only seen one on the road in the late 80's and other than that only at a couple of two stroke show's over the years.
I think it is an incredible find as old as it and the condition, from what I can see in the pic.
Buy it Jim :bacon:
A few more pics

Do it! :whoop: I'd rather have a RG400 than a RG500. More rare and unique.
Sure looks like a mighty nice specimen! :olaf:
Engine ever rebuilt? Life is too short. If you have the coin, get it.

Dunno about rebuilds. It's FOB from Japan. Appears to have led an easy life by JDM standards.
The bottom ends are pretty robust, and I'm planning on a ported 460cc conversion. The trans is the only thing I'm worried about. 2nd gear is notoriously weak in these things, and the parts to fix it are expensive.
YOLO is right, and hopefully it'll keep me from messing with my 356 too much.
you like it? can you afford it? then buy it. done. :whatever:

I mean, yeah, but after my LC and buying a (nearly) new 690SMCR, I swore off old bikes.
Every time I ride my TDR it seems like a clunky old POS. The RG is even older.
I def won't be happy until I do to the suspension and get a set of newer wheels on it. 16" front tire choices sux.
"I know you said it's in great shape, but what am I gonna be disappointed about when I see it?"
Just got a load of detail pics as an answer, and boy I'm glad I asked for them.
Cracked plastics, rusty fasteners, broken bits, pitting on the fork tubes, etc, etc.
Currently getting my Dad's place in CA ready to sell, our old house in Portland ready to rent, and our new house here in Portland ready to live, and a detached garage build and whole house remodel getting underway.
ANOTHER PROJECT IS EXACTLY WHAT I DON'T NEED RIGHT NOW. I SHOULD SPEND THE MONEY ON A NEW KTM AND SAVE MYSELF THE HEADACHE.
... I guess I could buy it now, and save the restomod til I have more time?
thats negotiating currency.. just remember, go in expecting a clunky pile of garbage and you will never be disappointed.
Always loved the Suzuki blue and white bikes, but personal preferences aside what's not to like about that? Have never seen one. I suppose parts are outrageous, but if it blows your skirt up buy it!

It's a beautiful bike, and would be a fun project, but I've got too much else going on to make it practical.
Happy to share the seller's contact info if anyone else is interested. He is in Oklahoma and has a ton of desirable JDM bikes available.
At this point I think I'm gonna spend the money on a Street Triple RS and focus my motorcycle wrenching efforts on my sadly neglected TDR250.

Right? All my friends have 890 Duke R's, and my 690SMCR gets left in the dust in the straights. I need something different and better, and not (almost) 40yo and needing love.

buy a zh2.
trust me, well worth the 20K and will out perform 95% of whats out there.

Haha, no way. A naked superdupersport is the absolute last thing I need. Way too over the top for my tastes.
Street Triple RS is way more my jam. 125hp is twice what my 690 makes and way more than enough to keep up.
if you get a chance ride one, they are fantastic. and very easy to ride.

It looks like something Batman would ride. 🤷🏻♂️
that's particularly funny coming from a KTM guy. :dawg:
like said, ride one, it will def change your perspective. :twocents:

The 690 looks like a big dirtbike, but I agree the street focused bikes (Dukes, RC8, etc) are way more futuristic than suits me. Even the STRS looks too much like Bumblebee (actually a pretty fun movie 'specially since it was set in NorCal) for me.
I'm sure the ZH2 is super fcuking sick and would blow my mind. If it's so good, why don't you have one in your garage? 😈
I don't think we make logical choices around here. Lol
My thoughts are, if I never ride anything newer than my 70s bikes it'll never feel like I'm missing out.
... also, even tho I'm looking for an all-day comfortable sport standard, I want something nimble and flickable. If you look at the ergos on the STRS and Dukes, it's very similar to a modern supermoto. Just with 2x the hp and supersport suspension. I'll gladly ride a ZH2 given the chance, but it looks like it'd be to the STRS, like a 'Busa is to a GSXR.
why don't i have one? as great as the Z is, my CB1100 is fast enough for me . i'm not much of a sport bike guy TBH, I also passed on a 950SM a few yrs ago. Just not my groove, but its a fantastic bike. Would i own one? absolutely. But i like slow klunky and outdated. ;)

I think that's something we all have in common. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't true.
I think the transmission in the rg400s were updated and no longer have the weak 2nd and 6th gear
I'll be honest, I've ridden a few v and square 4s. they are what they are and can be great. but I'd never want to live with one. my 0.02
