I went the Economy style but made the fork mount myself.

Cool! Please show us the mount you made. Thanks.
I still have an old GSX-R steering damper laying around from a previous project. Wondering if I can fit this to the RD.

This was taken quite a few years ago. I can get you better pics if you like.
The GSX-R Steering dampers are also able to be rebuilt. You can change oil weights and customize the dampening this way.
Mount it to the reflector hole on the RD400 like the Economy kit.
Truth.
Mine also has the rod reversed in the body, in order to put the "pretty" side up with the left side mounted position.
Thanks for the words of wisdom. Nice to know I can repurpose the part :vroom:
If i bought a universal?? Steering damper
What lenght do fit the rd400?
I use this one on our race bikes.
On the higher end. They were also sold by Works (re-branded)

This one is way more stroke and is 7 click adjustment
The NHK are 85mm stroke, 270-280 overall

Sucks being so busy I can't even participate. Well, it doesn't suck...
ANYWAY, I have a stupid question. What is a steering damper for?
I mean besides to dampen steering. Duh :patriot:
Head shakes. Low weight on the front followed by axial(?) (sideways) force usually. Could be a bump, railroad tracks a pigeon? Something. No bueno.
Keeps your bars and wheel steady when hitting bumps or if the front end gets light. Prevents the dreaded tank slapper.
Big Dave,
You can ride the bike way more aggressive without feeling un-planted.
Once you have a good steering dampner and get used to it, you won't like not having one on a RD.

Think of it like a shock absorber. With light/easy input, it moves freely. With fast/heavy input, it gets harder to move.
yup. adds stability, literally. so, if you hit tar snakes or front end gets light, it wont start to oscillate.
I went way overboard and fit a scotts damper on my rd, on the bottom of the tree.

Adding a steering damper is one of the top few things I've done to my bike, and I've done a lot to my bike.
