Title: RD350 3rd gear slip
Post by: mavguy on June 26, 2025, 04:43:15 PM
Hullo folks,  so I just get up one morning,  fire up the old RD350 LC cylinder hybrid,  reach the cafe and as soon as I finish up my latte and start heading home........the 3rd gear begins giving a horrible clanking sound ( sort of a gun cocking ) and starts to slip.......The problem seems  to only be in the 3rd gear till now. This was a first , never has such a problem before....engine oil levels are fine.
I am seriously hoping not to have to overhaul the entire engine/transmission as the last one was just 2000 miles.thanks.

I guess step one is to drain the oil and take a look at it. If there is any signs of chips, sorry, motor pull time.

Guessed as much. But what I find strange is that there was no problem when I parked. Only when I started back that it came up. It couldn't have happened on its own while parked?

Parking, or downshifting to park, is when it likely occurred.  All that momentum slamming down on the gears and the dogs trying to shift them.

You can leave the top end on, flip the motor over and only remove the bottom case to get to the trans
