Title: Off to paint
Post by: paul1478 on December 03, 2019, 09:08:43 AM
I have been wanting to paint by 76 400 from the day I got it but never was what I wanted in terms of performance. After that was all fixed by Chuck.
I was looking for graphics I liked. Stock are nice but I always liked that 70s yellow/black.
Chuck was able to design/have made some graphics I really like a lot. The tank, side covers and graphics are at the painters as of this morning.
can't wait for the results.

strange how 4-5 days always turns out to be more like 4-5 weeks...
stopped by Friday to see the tank as last Monday it was going into the paint booth Wednesday.
well it was in the paint booth ok...on the ground. Not going to ride but just want to see what it looked like. Maybe next week it will be done.

I just picked my tank and side covers up.
The guy fed up the graphics said it was not his fault. I gave him the person who made them phone number. Took him 5 days to call him and was told 3 weeks ago new graphics on the way. When I call him last week he said he had never received them.
So I called the graphics guy. He did not send them because the painter was going to send info about why he thought they were bad.
So
He obviously never paid they guy or even gave an address to send them to. I wonder how he thought they would arrive. Maybe he thought Santa was going to bring them.

I also think the color is off by quite a bit.
Back to the drawing board.

Gees sorry to hear that.

Hopefully you can find a competent painter that will do a good job.

sore spot..
Yes I found someone who had painted many bikes. Has what looks to be a busy shop. I am waiting on replacement graphics now. Some issues getting them printed but they guy printing them is a friend of Chucks so I am sure they will be done asap and perfect.
Weather has been great and I have been riding 4-5 days a week but my RD sits naked all alone and lonely. This is by far the longest I have went after the rebuild without riding it.
Hoping 2 weeks... I should have removed the chrome and had it redone. Had I know it was going to take this long I would have.

Well I am getting close. Painted graphics on and clear today.  I hope to have it tomorrow so I can get it together Sunday. I have to leave to Pittsburg Friday-Sunday morning. I miss riding it.

Thanks guys! Chucks guy did the graphics. I think he can get more if you ask him if anyone would be interested. I really do like them.

67 days to the gap.., wow, I already took the week off. Last time 2 bikes broke I am hoping for 2 less breaking this time...

Paul your paint and graphics look great, I am glad to see you have success after the last snafu paint deal. I am considering using the same graphics so it is great to see them applied.

My original graphics guy that did my Yellow screamer the first time 16 years ago moved to canada and sold his plotter So my other long time graphics guy did a remake in much more modern materials and Pauls job is the ginny pig other than the first guy was a dope!
They will be for sale soon as he's also making the one for the '78 seat tail cowl.
Then on to making them for the RD350 and the Daytona Special hopefully in the summer.

I got my pained tank back yesterday. Looks good not perfect two small defects but I've had enough waiting. Put everything back together rinsed out the gas tank Put fresh gas in two-stroke oil in it and started up for the first time in five months.
Rode around the neighborhood. It ran well So I took it out for a nice little ride.

40 miles into the ride I noticed a little decrease in power and then the motor locked up. I was able to pull over put the bike in neutral and try to start it again. Kickstarter would not budge. I had to call my wife to bring my truck and ramps and some straps.

When I got home I pulled out the spark plugs. And this is what the one on the left side look like. something must've been in the tank or something must've been plugged in the carburetor. I was just cruising in about 5000 RPMs. So bad news I need to top end. But the good news is I get to go visit my buddy Chuck. I want to get it down to them as soon as possible so he can work on it and have it ready before deals gap. If anybody can figure out why it blew up it would be him.

did you bleed your pump and lines upon initial start up?

No I'm on pre-mix. I mix 40 to 1 like I always do the same container fresh gas good suggestion though.  Something changed from when I wrote it last and put it back together that's for darn sure

Bummer! I'd pull the petcock to see if there was any debris in the fuel...

Yes. I will and empty the tank again. I'm heading Down to Clearwater Thursday with the bike so MR Supertune can see what caused it and fix it. My wife says it is cursed. Last year was the power dynamo blowing up and now the top end.

Pull the fuel line off the left carb and check flow before taking anything apart. I see you have inline filters on the carb lines. These filters get blocked quite easily, thats why a lot of guys refuse to run them.

Bummer.

Just cruising along, my guess would be an air leak somewhere on the side that shows damage.

The other plug looks good?

Yes. It looks a little black if anything.
Good idea. I'll check.

Hate to read that Paul but confident you and Chuck will figure out the root cause and get it repaired quickly.

Detonation for sure, but at 5,000 cruising the main jet is not really in play.  There may be a blockage or timing issue, but ask Chuck to check needle jets and needles.  That's where most two strokes fail on the street.

Rarely a main jet problem - usually needle and needle jet.

So I need to get my bike down to Chuck. I was going to drive it down and have a nice visit but with all the stay at home and I have seen stories of FL state patrol stopping cars from out of state I hade to come up with a plan B.
PLAN B
I do medical logistics for a living. Move CT/MR/Cath labs, linear accelerators ect from all over the world to hospitals around the US.
one if my customers has a large amount of "scrap" they need be disposed of. Last time I was visiting Chuck I notice a van behind his building that says, Medical and electronic scrap. Humm, better take a photo of that.

I remembered the van last week and came with my plan B.

I asked the company, do you want to keep paying storage or move on this scrap? They said arrange to get it done. So I booked a truck and by some strange coincidence there was exactly enough room to add my RD...
So it will arrive to Chuck tomorrow morning.
cost to Paul $0.00.

load bars are in front of the load so nothing will shift onto my bike and the driver had 2 bikes so he will be nice to it.

Nice move!

It puts a lot of stress on the sidestand the way you have it.  Imagine the suspension compressing every time you hit a bump.

Always best to strap the bike down with the stand up.

Nice!

What's your plan for recovering it from FL?  We may be confinement until end of May

Well recovery no plans only hopes of deals gap happening and meeting Chuck then. Looking worse for that everyday. May have to wait this out and then go for a visit to FL.

Also
Note about the kickstand. Your right.
