Title: My junk R5
Post by: soonerbillz on December 22, 2019, 01:37:29 PM
Hi folks I thought as my 1st real bike post show you the R5 I picked up some time ago.
I pulled this out of a guy's barn... he really had kind of a little salvage yard going on north of where I live at...  way out in the country here in Oklahoma.
This thing was really left for dead as it's missing tank and as you can see a whole bunch of other parts. Also the top is missing off the motor.
The bike has been sitting as I said in a barn but it had a lot of water on it in so... a whole lotta rusty, crusty parts on it that will really need to be looked at.
The bike seems to be one that I would like to go ahead and build-up.
I never owned an R5 before and I was looking to build one over the next few months to get ready for next summer as a regular rider for back and to work and some fun rides too.
The bike doesn't have what looks like the original engine. Looks to be a DS 7 engine lower ...I guess a 250cc so I have a little bit figuring out to do to build it up engine wise ... meanwhile other than that start getting parts for it.

I'm trying to add a pic but keep getting a error message saying file size too large??

Welcome aboard, Bill! I use a free image size ap that works well, just has a few ads now and again.  The settings you see in this pic work for me.

I think people put the 250 lower end on them to get better gearing in the primary for quickness. May be some other reason, I'm new to all this business with these little bikes.

As you can see I was able to get pics resized and posted...
As I said... rusty and crusty.

I posted up on the Wrench board about the motor.. it's a DS7 lower in my R5 chassis

I thought that the 250 and 350 had the exact same bottom end, tranny and all?

I just purchased a DS7 in nearly the same shape. I honestly like the projects that come this way. For me, I can't take a decent original bike and make it unoriginal or customize it, let alone cut on the frame. It just feels blasphemous. However when they are crusty like ours, who cares. There's hardly any stock parts I want to use anyhow! Stock pipes, shocks, steel rims, airbox, battery box..... all gotta go if you are really doing it up!

Looks like you'll be getting into that motor too. Good time to swap to 6sp or RD400 tranny, upgrade clutch, lighter RD350 crank..

it is the same except for primary gear, clutch basket, oil pump gear and pump, but all swapable.   :twocents: no downside tot he 250 bottom end, you can just go one up on the front sprocket will offset most of the difference if you want 350 gearing.

The R5 I think back to mostly stock. Not a resto but close enough.  350 top end.. probably stay with the piston port and 5 speed ..

The 250 is a mess that front end is so wrong and the only good thing is the motor is complete, carbs and all. So I think it will end up a cafe or street-able road race clone.

It's been a while since I posted on this thread. I didn't want it to die a web dusty death. Ya'll were kind enough to respond to it..so it's only fair I give it a update.
The R5: This bike is going to see a lot of use..
I decided to go with the 6 speed RD350 tranny upgrade. I also will be putting in a matching RD350  clutch set. I will be doing quite a bit of highway travel on the bike..and my home has more than a few hills. The extra gear will help on those long rides and the wider gear range will be a blessing for the ups and downs. If I lived in town the 5 speed would be more than adequate.. but that is not the case.
To keep this bike as simple as possible and keep it R5 real I just bought a R5 top end to sit on that YDS7 case. I have purchased a correct set of R5 carbs to complete the missing items list.
I also found a excellent R5 fuel tank.. it showed up today and I am impressed by the condition..just a few minor dings..and almost not rust inside.
I have so many projects in play..plus I am working two jobs until May..when I retire.
Then it's foot on the gas on my stuff. Till then.. it's baby steps.

that you on FB that just got the 71 tank? that tank is in nice shape. good score.  :cheerleader:

dont forget you need to change all the trans parts to swap to 6 speed correclty. including the shift shaft and arms.  :twocents:

Yes..that was me. I took a chance on a unknown seller through a fb group. He also had the R5 jugs and heads I needed.  The top end parts will need work.. but they look good. May be worthy of throwing some $$ on. And yes that tank is excellent..so happy!

I didn't get a title for this bike as the it was abandoned and trashed..(left for dead).
So next week I'm sending off to Vermont the application and bill of sale. I hope to have it titled back in Oklahoma by summertime.  I could do a Title 42 here but it's such a pain in the butt! The Vermont way is much easier.. but more costly.

Just as an FYI, you should get that paperwork in to Vermont as soon as you can, they are running a few months behind.  It usually only takes around 2 weeks but they are almost 8 weeks out now, I called and they let me know they are behind.

I actually got the bike out of my storage and pulled it into my shop area. Going to start the teardown and see exactly what is usable and what is not. I'm not thinking there will be much as far as wiring, rubber or cables that are salvageable.
As I said I have started accumulating the parts and will be sending off my top end and crank to John Ritter in the next couple of weeks.
My plan is to get the bike in running and driving condition by this summer .. then do a full resto over next winter..
I just want to ride this thing.

Here is a video I made... just a little overview.

I can already tell this project is gonna take a chunk of change. $$$
I barely have started and already I'm looking at +1k on just rubber, small parts and such. Haven't even got into the big ticket engine and paint work money yet.
Not complaining though. I could have just bought a already built runner.. but whats the fun of that? Besides.. who knows what pig in a poke a bought, built bike would be? Might be just as expensive as building from scratch when you dig into issues unknown.
This bike will be correct top to bottom and be all new.
No idea what the final costs will be... but I'm determined to see this through.

I've gotten several quotes on powder coat.
I'm not 100% certain on whether to go coat or paint.
I'm leaning to do the powder coat route but it will raise the budget by quite a bit.
So of the weird part was of all the quotes I received the lowest came from the place that has to most positive reviews.
The high was at 550$ and the low was 400$
That includes blasting & the coating.
My painter wants 250$ to paint but I'll have to get it blasted elsewhere.
Of course I could just paint it myself..

So after reviewing all the info on the Dyna S and Vape systems .. and reading as much on them in this forum and others, I've decided to just bite the bullet and get the Vape. Seems silly the get squirmy over a difference of around $150 when i can eliminate all the problems that the stock alternator and ignition brings..
Pricey for sure though.

Probably wrecked enough times to knock it off. Mine was hit hard enough to bend one side far enough to let the upper fork clamp bolt hit the tank. I've repaired the tank and have a temporary bumper made out of a zip tie glued on for now. They are useful to prevent tank damage. Find an RD tank with front upper corner dents, and you'll probably find damaged fork stops.

As this bike is going to be a regular rider the choice was pretty easy. Same for going with the RD trans and clutch.
I know I said earlier that I was going to keep the stock exhaust.. I really haven't changed my mind 100%... but I am wondering

well, that was my reason as well. reliable and done.
I literally have had the chambers laying around for a decade or so, so i tossed them on. I would not have been heartbroken if they sucked, but my 70 has the stock pipes so i figured one stocker was enough. that has a dyna on it and its dead stone reliable.

on super stuck ones ive had luck -gently- applying pressure at the area where the oil lines go thru , where that rectangular grommet is. its the only non sealing pry pint. just be gentle, use a steady force and try to go smooth, will probably come off. maybe.

Lets hope if for some bizarre reason someone did epoxy, they didn't coat both sides of dowels before putting in. I agree would not be strangest thing I've seen on a bike.

I was thinking of something similar, Mark. I would try "bagging it". Pour a small amount of acetone through the oil line opening and then tape a plastic bag around the case just inside the cover-to-case mating surface. Put an ounce or so of acetone in a spray paint cap and seal it up inside the bag. Acetone goes to vapor at relatively low temperatures and should penetrate that thin amount of epoxy. It may take a day or so.

Alright!
The cover finally came loose!  And yeah they used epoxy over a paper gasket  :umm:
I kept tapping the thin scraper and sprayed the acetone on it waiting a couple minutes between hits and it finally popped.
Thankfully nothing cracked or broken.

Thanks Mark for the tip!

Then I walked in the barn and looked at this poor abused, left for dead thing.

Another piece of the puzzle connected.
They have the mysterious A1 & A2 markings.

No biggie. Get them cleaned and built.

They certainly look proper with those '278' hallmarks.  We never solved the A stamp but I would say you're good to go.

I finally made the move to fully rebuild mine this winter with all new genuine Mikuni parts, cost was about $150ish but I should be good for years on them now...

So after really inspecting my stock pipes.. they just aren't as good as I hoped.
The pipes ha no big dents or rust through.  But they were butchered on the baffle bolt holes and they put a big self tapping bolt through one of the cones. The amount of surface rust is enough to warrant strip, blast and rechroming.  But the expense is outweighed by the val.. this is not a concours build.
So I guess I'll be expansion exhaust shopping.
I want to keep my oem foot pegs brackets.. if possible.

Those are 278-21746-00-00, DAMPER
I don't think they are being reproduced, but there are some used ones on Ebay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-1974-RD250-rd250-rubber-dampers-set-278-21746-00-00-/324281745636) now

On this post.. first of all I want to apologize to cracky. We made a deal for me to buy a set of pipes and I told I was legit on the deal..
But unfortunately I had to reneg and you will se why shortly..
Brother give me a call and I will make it righteousness!

Anyways.. as you ALL know I've been a royal pain in ya'lls butts for a few months now.. with stupid questions and asinine posts.
But today the sun shined down on me.
I posted on a FB group looking for some fenders and a fellow I know locally but had not see or heRd from in quite some time read my post.. and reached out. He said "come on by the house.. I think I got what you need.
Turns out that was a understatement!

First off sadly he had not one good front fender..
He donated to me these rear fenders and both are excellent!

I have been hawking about looking for wheels.. made a long windedpost about how bad mine were..ya'll gave me a good buch of responses..
But then he wheeled out these gorgeous things..
All done up and with unused brand new tires..
And said.. "gimme $200 bucks for them"
I couldn't pull my wallet fast enough!

Ok.. I'm happy now.. but wait! THERE'S MORE!
Then he tells me to go in his storage barn ... where he has pipes galore. And shows me a rack of R5 pipes and tells me to pick out two sets Ilike.
I go through them all and get some super nice ones.
..I say .. "how much?"  He says "take them as a gift" !!
WOW.. !!

Then pulls out this box and says "Here take this with you"
And man it had a bunch of stuff I need.. especially the side cover!
Stoked..

Any ways I was super happy to get all these parts at a great price.
And if I left then.. I was like a dude at a Chinese buffet.. came hungry, left way full.
But it turns out he had a great dessert for me.
He brings out a project he said he will never get to and offered it to me for $300 bucks..
Another R5 frame with a nice motor complete!
Engine he says will run, has great compression and is real sweet.
Best part?? It's got a good title!
Booya baby!!  :metal:

This build has become a a real $$ pit.
Not bitching..just stating the truth.
I hope that when it's done it it all I hope it would be.
I've build a few race bikes over the years .. they really were serious money pits. But they were great fun animals I had a loots great experiences on them.
I've retro built a couple of older bikes but never held them long enough to say I enjoyed them.  I have always wanted a yammy twin 2 stroker..this is my first build and I have went head over heels on it.
Still so far away to seeing it done.. hoping it is all I hope it was in my head.

So I pulled yours and sent the liners to John to finish my job right.
Thanks so much for offering them .

So I'm getting my frame sorted..
Looking over the seat mounts on one frame .. I notice the mounts are nor the same. One looks straight off the frame, the front mount looks like its headed uphill.
Is this right or is one tweaked?

It would take a hard hit to knock that fork stop off the headstock. Better check the frame is not tweaked.

Thanks all.. got the frame tab squared away.. well I will next week after I get my 220v finished in the shop.
But here is my conundrum:
I have 2 frames .. a title but butchered as in the po cut all the tabs off this frame.  Seat, battery, oil tank and a few others.
My other is complete except that broken fork stop.. and no title or even a bill of sale.. if you remember I pulled this from a closed salvage.
What to do?? what to do..
Title: Re: My junk R5
Post by: soonerbillz on August 26, 2021, 06:08:54 PM
So here is my solution..
I won't be using the butchered frame for street use.. so I removed the head stock numbers and restamped them for my good title.
Not the most kosher way.. but in this situation..I think its fine.
After I get the tab fixed..the frame blasted and painted I'll take the out of state title and the frame to the police and have them inspect it..
Then get a clean new title.
If they lock me up I'll only have you guys to thank😁

These are the 2 side stands I have. I'm going with the one on the left.
The other looks tweaked. Same with the foot rest stands. The bottom looks bent.
Other parts I'm working with what I have which may be just one parts.but
Not sure if air box and other tins deserve or require coating. I may just paint them.

Happy to get the fork stop done.
I first cut some 1" bar stock into 1" pieces.
Then trimed one into a 1/2" piece.
Then milled a bevel round into the 1/2" and one of the 1" pieces so they fit the round head stock center position.
Then tacked those to the head stock, then the final 1" piece on top.
After that welded all of it solid. Ground the welds down proper and finished off with buffer.
I think it came out as good as possible.

So I have a vintage ride coming on July 15.
I decided to go through this one and prep it for that ride.
It has great compression 145 - 140 left to right.
Should I put new rings or leave it alone?
Gears all work as they should it seems.
Definitely new gaskets and seals.
I have lots of new parts for it..pretty much everything you can think of.
I bought double and triple of everything.
Really hoping to get it done..

why rering it? id be more concerned about crank seals than rings.

Definitely putting new seals in. I guess the rings aren't that neccessary with such good compression.  I imagine the new gaskets is more than enough. Just thought it would be a good idea for new rings.

Motor pulled.
Now one head bolt on the right side cylinder was frozen. A rachet with a breaker was laughed at by the head bolt, it laughed at my little impact  My big impact still had to work overtime to break it free. Was really worried I was gonna crack the case.
Now I can't get the cylinder off!!!

SOB right side jug is stuck like hell.
I soaked for 24 hours with WD40 .. Then heated the jug
No good. Would not budge.  So I made my 50/50  solution of acetone and ATF.
I'll give it another 24 and try again.

Day 3 of beating with a dead blow after letting the stud holes soak in acetone/atf mix. Heated the jug with my heat gun for a hour forst.
Nothing!!!
SOB won't even crack a bit.
At my wits end here.

Not sure how to drill out studs with a stuck cylinder.
Maybe a if I had a 3/8" hole saw maybe.

well would be an 8mm or 5/16 drill. I've only had to do that 1 time on an s2 motor, but would dev avoid if possible. keep soaking.

WD40 isn't a penetrating oil, use PlusGas or Ziebe Black Magic (if you can buy it?). Even soak it in a bucket of diesel is better than WD.

Likely my only last choice.
I let it sit another 24 hours with Croil.
Heated it with my propane torch..
Beat the shit out of it.
Never budged

So here I go again.
I of course lost all the R5 engine parts and stuff in the fire.
But like the proverbial Phoenix I'm not letting that little thing stop me from a R5 smoker ride.  I have a frame, a tank and some pipes that didn't get destroyed so that's a start.
This group here is special. Without it I would know nothing about these bikes and ya'll always been good folks. But without naming names (yet) I'll tell you I've been gifted a R5 lower unit.
So the quest starts again.

So let's just say... this was a good day.
If you remember way back in this build thread I told you about a good friend sold me some great parts... then told me to come back and made me a great deal on a titled frame, motor and tons more parts.
Since then him and me have been on a few Tiddler rides.. rides with just a few friends and lots of bike talk since.
Well he called me the other day and told me to come to his place. He wanted to show me something.
I went over there today. He showed me a sweet Bridgstone 200cc twin. The bike was all original and sounded great. Beautiful bike. He said he had to buy it.
 Can't blame him.
But then he told me that wasn't why he told me to come over. He took me and showed me a R5.. complete bike in fantastic condition... except..though it would start it was making seriously bad noise from the pistons and bottom end.
Then he handed me the clear title.  :omg:
Said.. "It yours.. price is a cheeseburger, fries and a shake."
I was totally floored.
Of course now it's in my yard.

He said he saw my fire posts he knew this one was destined to be my new build.

Yeah now I'm happy.
 Getting top end done.
New parts for that, the new rebuild on my crank and all that's needed for a 6 speed trans to R5 transplant.
I ordered every rubber or wear part for the engine and frame/chassis.
Talked to my body man to get the tank painted.
 Stoked I am
This bike will be sweet
...just like my previous build that went up in smoke.
Thanks to all who helped get me here.

Ok another crappy internet night...so no pic
They are supposed to be ProX R5 rods kits #03.2251
But though I know they fit multiple engines I'm not good enough to know.

According to the PROX catalogue I have the 03.2251 kit is for a RD / DT 125LC YPVS. The kit for the RD250 / 350 is a 03.2025 which should be the same as the R5. The 03.2251 kit has almost identical dimensions however there are a couple of subtle differences the main one being that the big end pin is 3mm longer.

Strangely the OEM reference on the box ( 34X ) is the correct Yamaha code. The rod in the 03.2251 kit would have worked however you would have had to use you're old big end pin (not recommended) Have you just bought the one kit ?

Making good progress on the new R5 Phoenix project. Lots of prep accomplished and parts have ordered. I'll likely have the engine done by the 1st week in August fingers crossed 🤞
Frame teardown has started and paint work should be done by the last part of August as well.
It's amazing how paint materials alone will cost almost as much as the engine work. 😮
The timeline is fine for me as I'm still recuperating from my recent shoulder surgery and I can't really push it too hard or fast.
Anyways I'll say this. The first attempt on my part to build a R5 was really a long struggle because I knew so little on how these bikes were built and the process of actual 2t engine building, what parts are needed and what parts could work together.
This time it seems much easier and going much smoother. But if anything it seems like I really have a better understanding of what I'm doing and it's factoring to make this build a little more financially sensible.
I really went a little overboard the first time buying doubles and triples of everything, making mistakes and ruining stuff then redoing stuff.
I thought the last build was going to be sweet... and still do. This time it will not only be even better, it will be correct.
Most importantly this project is so good for me mentally. The fire and subsequent losses were really devastating.  I really wasn't sure if I had it in me to start all over again.  But here I am.
Thanks to all you guys who have helped me get here. Couldn't have got here without you!🫡

Stuff is coming together ❤️
Top end done
Crank done
Cases vapor hone cleaned.
All engine parts for build sorted.
For right now I have to shelve everything as I'll be busy building a small shop to work out of.
Working off my porch isn't cutting it.  My new bigger building won't be done for a while. But I'm happy with the R5 progress so far and look forward to getting the rest done!
