about a week and a half ago, my buddy had not run it in about 5 years, wanted to know if i wanted it back. ( i had asked for 1st right of refusal). I paid him what he was asking, which is what he bought it from me for wayyy back. Need carbs unstuck and cleaned, battery,
etc, typical sitting type stuff, but real glad to get it back. Not 100% sure where i'm going to go with it but think i might mod it a'bit', get seat redone (foam is powder and cover is brittle).
this is the ONLY bike i've ever owned that i've actually bought back. Im kinda stoked about it. :cheerleader:

If your using evapo rust or similar, wrap a seed sprouting heating pad over it.

White vinegar will work well in cases where it is surface rust ie not severe. Will not over etch, I have used this many times with great results.

The carbs look great, what is your choice for soaking the bodies in?
Looking good so far. :clap: Those carb bodies look nice and clean now.
I've had good luck with either carb cleaner (which is mainly acetone) or just acetone to dissolve varnish build-up in carbs. Just make sure any rubber. plastic, phenolic, etc. is removed first.
thanks! gunk carb (the gallon can) cleaner and 25% wd 40 in the ultrasonic. nothing works better. those carbs sat for over 5 years, they were NASTY.

in the ultrasonic, 30 minutes. then a spray out with brake clean thru all the passages and jets, then respray with wd. Not quite an hour from on bike to bench, clean. I did this one morning while having my coffee. :haw:
The carbs on my VTR1000 need this attention, and will let my harbor freight ultrasonic stretch its legs.
when i did my concours carbs, I split the rack and it took a bit longer for obvious reasons. this was on reassembly. this also sat outside for almost 5 years with the fuel on, then dried out.

point being, even on bigger way more complicated 4 stroke carbs.. it works.
just put the solution back in the can when done to avoid smell. take out any diaphrams and hand clean those.

Thanks for the additional info, I have used gunk in the past for carbs in automotive application, however without the wd40. I will try this brew out for the VTR carbs. :clap:
nothing too exciting, but did a bit of cleanup. the seat foam had turned to dust, so had to get that cleaned out. also the tank was pretty rusty inside,/ have a petcock rebuild kit coming from john at economy, and a complete throttle cable assembly. In the meantime, soaked the inside of the tank with some 'metal rescue' and water for about 4 days. came out really well, especially considering what it looked like. I'll probably hit it again to get the stuff off the spine. But for now, its pretty good.
this has mineral spirits in it now neutralizing.

I like the auxiliary fuel setup, carbs look great in place. Fuel tank is making a nice recovery.

Does the mineral spirits stop it from flash rusting again? If so will that hold for a while if you are not ready to fill it back with gas?

Is Metal Rescue a better option than Evapo-Rust in this situation? Not really up on all the rust treatment solutions and preferences.
I'll give a comparison in a few days, I am doing a similar condition tank with Evaporust now.
ive used both. about the same, i think evaporust is a -tad- stronger but i could be wrong. end result is the same . :twocents:
About 8 hours in and so far the Evaporust looks to be working well. you can see the line in the gas cap where I had it laying on. I have also heard that it can be damaging to Aluminum if left on too long.
so small update. tanks clean, got rebuild kit from john at economy and good to go.
also, swapped out coils. for moment, relatively stock, ie, points. so, until i change to something else, i figured id try a trick i learned at the gap this year. SV650 replacement coils are 3 ohm and DIRT cheap on ebay. so, figured id try a set on here.
had to make sub harness for spade to bullet, but did that and good to go. bolted in to back spot, used spacer and works perfect.

Need to get the gauge mounting situation sorted out as well. just don't like it. got the beverly shear and some aluminum, going to fab up a new mount rd trees/r5 gauges.

I repainted both of them actually. just missing the decal on the oil pump side. that DID have an rd clutch cover on it.
a bit of history, back in around 03 or so i was going to use this as a track bike. had it set up as such, never did, put it back to relatively stock and sold it to Leo, added the disc for him later. Im glad i never got the track bug, especially on this one.

I like all yamaha twins. I always felt R5's looked better, hands down. Ive owned 4 total, 2 of which i currently now own, ive owned many more rds.
I mean, its essentially the same bike as an rd aside from obvious differences. smaler ones are the lack of a lower frame rail mount for the muffler, battery box mounting and air box differences, and the motor and trans stuff. also the friction dampener, drum brake, etc. however, an r5 can be turned into an rd pretty easily.
I liek the midrange pull of a piston port. easier to ride IMHO . (stock to stock). an rd250 or 350 power is much more abrupt at 5500, as we all know, due to a slight dip before the harmonics get right , and most useful tuning,t o me, gets that smoothed out on a reeded motor. they got some of this sorted with the 400
but back to the R5.
My 70 is just a neat survivor, always runs well, I have -no- idea whats going on in the motor as ive never even pulled a head off. its just a nice stock example of one thats a rider.
The 72 is going to obviously be more of a 'bridge', to me, between that and my 2 hot rodded rds, which are both a bit over the top. They both ride and run really well and can be used all day long believe it or not. I even took the lightweight out on a 4 hour group ride a few weeks ago. reliable as the day is long.
The 72 has the basic upgrades the rds had, 6 speed transmission, disc brake, will get electronic ign (still on points now) and now, chambers.
I just like them like i would an RD. they tend to be thrashed less. Im quite fond of the RD250 top end, they make a really good amount of power and are often overlooked, but they have much more transfer area in the ducts than the 350s do due to the bore decrease. That sounds like a cool project for sure.
IF the r5 were my ONLY yamaha twin, id be tempted to fit reeded 350 cyls, for sure. But id def consider the one you are looking at with the 250 topend.
the beauty of an r5 is all the machanical shit for th emost part swaps, and rd support is strong.
your right as far as converting to rd, I Thank you for the input. The R5 is basically complete minus correct seat and side panel. engine is not seized however it has a RD 250 reed valve top end. Fellow is asking 550 for the bike.

got tuning dialed in a bit. now need to swap to 7 disc clutch, won't hold even with new plates with eh stock 6 plate.
stock r5 carbs, 169p-0 emulsion tube vs the 169o-0, 140 main, 5dp7 needle, 2nd clip, 35 pilot (needs a 37.5 or a 40), airscrews at a hair under 3/4. k&n in y boot.
not a 'legit' plug chop but feels good, pulls really strong over 5k.

headlight is the chrome one from economy cycle from yrs ago with an led bulb H4 and i put the high beam indicator in from the stock headlight. thanks, its fun. :D

received my vape CDI from john at economy last week, and also installing a zeeltronic (spare i had) on this to give it better charging, much better spark and a rev limiter.
keep in mind, its an rd bottom end but same as an r5 for the most part. had to notch the LH cover to clear the pickup.
Also, used a long thin piece of welding wire to snake up a neutral wire through the vape harness.

the zeel lets you set the initial timing static angle, this wound up being 37.2. what you do is set it up advanced, somewhere under 50 degrees, and then adjust it digitally under setup. max advance im using is 22 on this motor so far. retard goes to 17 degrees at 9k. I just write the static on the rotor

zeel box mounted on front of battery box. the nice thing about usiung a zeel is it requires power to run, so you power this off the old coil lead and your ign works as stock with the key and kill. no relay needed.

side note, you HAVE to used resistor plugs OR caps to run the zeel. no way around it. I forgot, wouldn't fire off without em, so i put on 5 ohm resistor caps.. otherwise, it scrambled the zeel. :eek:

Havent updated much, but the 72 just seems to be running really well all year. But, I did a bit of cleanup on it and added a tool tray under the seat.
What i did was bend up some aluminum, and used speed nuts to mount the upright tot he stock battery box (no cutting nec to stock stuff). then bent up the top part and used an m5 bolt with some heatshrink on it to sit in the stock 'pin' location of the airbox.
this would work on an rd as well. (k&N y boot solution). I use one of the alarm batteries as well hence the extra room in there.

so, a sa LONG overdue follow up, this is the biek i put the ebay RD cyls on. 6 mos ago i swapped them out and its been really good. I wanted to put in some v force reeds vs the stockers, remove the reed spacer and just get a look at the face of the piston. this motor sees 10 pretty regular, and gets ridden fairly frequently.
Reeds are for rm100/kx85. drill holes out to 9.5 mm and they bolt right in.. NO cyl cutting. they are also 4mm shorter than a stock rd reed cage so the boost port gets unshrouded a bit.
Cyls and pistons are ebay specials, $194 set that come sup. JUst had to chamfer the ports & remove the intake tab on the piston like a banshee piston.
carbs are stock rd350 carbs , no dave f mod.
the v-force reeds alone, no other changes, def smoothed out the transition intot he powerband. zero jetting changes needed.
also did a compression check after 6 mos. about where it was from 'new'. heads are unmodified r5 units, so not super awesome.
