Title: The other side of my garage
Post by: busa1300 on March 25, 2019, 09:05:14 PM
This is the 4 stroke side of my garage....

I'll start with my oldest and work my way up.....

1978 Suzuki GS1000E
Sadly this bike has been sitting for over 12 years now.
I bought it and had planned on turning it into a full on AMA period correct Superbike.
Collected a lot of parts....but mostly dust as my two stroke projects keep pulling me away.

I eventually ended up pulling off the 29 smoothbores and cleaned them up and put them on my other GS1000 Left for Dead project

But I have a set of 33 smoothbore to go back on, along with a big port head and 1085 Wiseco kit.....and lots of other cool old parts....

Here is my other 78 GS1000
This bike was originally purchased as a parts bike for the above GS I already had.
But plans changed, and after about $4500 on top of the initial $400 Craigslist price....I had a running bike.

nice work!  those things are exactly suited to my tastes of what a good looking four stroke bike is.

Heres another of my 4 stroke project bikes.
Started out as a bare frame and swingarm that were hanging in the rafters of a barn...

This is the the first version which I built starting in 1997

Then in 2002 I bought a Hayabusa, and the CBX was parked in my basement.
After about 10 years of riding the Hayabusa, I started getting bored with it, and wanted something with a bit more character.
So I dusted off the CBX, and decided to freshen it up a little.

Your collection is on another level. I like the vette too! My a good friend of mine has a '63 he is putting together after it sat for a good 15 years. Those Katana's have a look about them, that is for sure!

Thanks guys
The blue 78 GS1000 was recently sold to recover some finances and get a spot in the garage for my TZR250RSP.
Very sad to see it go, but the guy who bought it drove 6 hours one way to get it, and loved it the minute he saw it.

The 65 Vette was a 365/327, M21 trans, 4.11 rear, genuine factory original knock offs, and added factory side pipes.... Long gone now to a restorer somewhere in Ohio. :bang:     The 2007-08 financial crisis hit me from behind.
Also had a Sept build 68 L71 two top roadster, and a 71 base roadster..... Yes....gone as well.... divorce in those two cases.

The van gets attention almost every time I take it out...usually kids pointing and telling their mom or dad to look.
It has better looking tires and wheels now.

The Katana has always been a love it or hate it kind of design..... I am more towards the love it for what is was at the time.  8)

This is my 86 GSXR1100
Bought it in March 2009.....have never ridden it.
Bought on Ebay, as a non running bike. Drove about 5 hours into Ohio to get it out of the dirt floor barn it had been stored in.
No title.....
Rough but complete...still has the original front tire  under 10,000 miles I think :blah:
Engine ran,but was leaking oil from the head gasket area where the oil flows back down to crankcase.
I bought it very cheap knowing someday they would go up in price, and started collecting parts.

And it has been collecting nothing but dust since.
I got deeper into my two strokes, so it keeps getting pushed back each year with another project ahead of it.

Possibly a retirement project in another 10 years.....

It might seem a waste for it to just sit like this.....but I think it's better than the fate it may have had......
.....during the heat of the custom street fighter time period
It's a still survivor.

1988 FZR1000 that I bought used in spring of 1989 with less than 1000 miles on it.

I've been through hell and back on this one.
Street raced and even had wheelie bars and slicks for a while when I took it to the track to run...
Put me down on the ground hard on the street once, and I still have metal in me from the crash....(busted me up pretty good...bike made out better)

After those early years it ended up sitting collecting dust for almost 20 years before I got it back running again...
Put all the street bits back on it to make it legal, pulled the tether kill and air shifter off
Still runs just like it did during those dragstrip days... :metal:

Although for the past couple years it has been collecting dust again.... ???

Which one to ride would be great if I lived in the South West.....but in Northern Indiana....it has been Since last October  >:(

Quite a big gap between the 1988 FZR and the next bike I bought....a 2002 Hayabusa.
Bought brand new as a present to myself for getting my seriously screwed up life finally straightened out, and completely out of the system....
....(clean and sober for over 20 years now).... Bikes are my only addiction now.

Not many pics of the Hayabusa, as black seems to be a hard color to get good pictures with.....
Here it is in 2012 when I went to the first annual Wilmington Mile with the ECTA....rain at the starting line....

It has taken a while to get there, but I think I'm only 3-4 years away from having all my projects done....

Project burn out is what ended up causing me to buy my KTM 1290SDGT.
After spending a ridiculous amount of $$$ for my RZV500R project, and then to find out it had rust in the cylinders (only 6000 miles from new)
And knowing with rust in cylinders, a good chance of bearing issues as well.....The thought of splitting the cases and the expense of parts caused me to throw in the towel (for about 5 months anyway) and get a bike I only had to put gas in and ride.
And with 175HP I was too weak to resist it....The test ride had me signing papers.

I took my wife with me for the test ride...as I was initially buying it for two up travel.
She has never had positive things to say about any type of exhaust sounds before.....but when on the KTM she said she really liked how it thumped  :whoop:
Just one more reason to take it home

The Hayabusa and the 1290SDGT were both beaten with the ugly stick.....but you never see it while using up that 175HP

I was actually waiting to be cleared for take off......bike sat on the line for over an hour before track was dry enough for a run...
Standing on the line in wet leathers in about 50 degree weather. I swore off ever doing top speed running again, until last year when I went to Bonneville to get back on track for the salt this year.

Hi busa1300 sorry I don't have any pics to back my claim here but I to own a 16'1290SDGT. Mine's the one that wears the orange fairing shrouds along with orange/black hard bags. At first it was a bit too orange for my taste and I really wanted to get some kinda graphics sticker kit to subdue that but the color scheme has grown on me. Also mine is pretty much all stock with exception of some R&G frame sliders, radiator guard, and tinted windscreen that the previous owner added. I got her with 9k on the odo and  what a beast. At this point I really like the bike a lot and only have a few legit gripes. Being 5,10 I can't flat foot it at stop lights except when I do the peg leg to one side but that's fine as I get used to it and really bikes are made to be ridden anyways not idling in traffic. On that note I also find it a bit frustrating to snicker that gearbox into neutral which seems so much harder to find coming to stops than say your Hayabusa or my 06'gixxer 1000. Again I except this and often times I just keep the clutch pulled in a a stop. I do find the shifts to be buttery smooth if and hard to explain one attempts just the right timing of on/off throttle clutch work in the attempt at spirited riding otherwise the shifts can be in the words of Jay Leno a wee bit "agricultural" and in my words just plain clunky,

Seriously though my bike in stock form with no power mods what soever sounds quiet yet purposeful and has more power than I really get the opportunity to use, Exciting! The handling seems to be far beyond it's dry/wet weights as well. It's also amazing how practical the bike can be going grocery/cloths shopping and or picking up my favorite brews on the way home ;D. It's an overall amazing do all bike that I didn't want to buy new and glad I had the means to get into used. However looking back maybe well worth trading up for a new one next year or two. It's the ultimate compromise bike.

That was one of the biggest reasons I got mine....it can do basically ANYTHING you ask of it.
Drag race / track day / haul a couple gallons of milk on my way home from riding it to work / nice rides around the lakes or to wineries for the wife / wheelies and stoppies / or anything else other than big jumps on a dirt bike track.
I lost all interest in every other bike I had in the garage for the first riding season I had it....
At 0.9 percent financing and over 25% off the list price I couldn't find a reason to say no to a new one.

One of the reasons I bought my KTM was because I was tired of working on two strokes so much.
But I had a large investment in my RZV and I had to finish it.
I went on to build another two stroke project....and I have found myself burned out again with never ending work on projects.
Because these strokers always need some type of attention when you have more than one....
Along with my trip to Bonneville this year...I found myself wanting the newest baddest sports bike possible for a future run.
And a bike I could just turn the key and go...every time every day without any concerns....
I ended up selling the CBX on the previous page as well as a RGV project that was languishing for too many years.

This is what I got
217HP...a two stroke powerband has nothing on this bike.

Congrats Randy, that's a bad-ass machine! :bacon: :olaf:

Quite the museum in the background. I totally understand the need to just jump on and go riding, instead of doing continuous maintenance and wrenching. I can relate and I have nowhere near the vintage 2T quiver you're hoarding.

Yea...the constant need to search for parts for the bikes I have has turned into a serious pain in the ass.
The last straw was when I had decided that I wanted to start doing track days next year on my RS250, tried starting it and the right cylinder started fouling out and had major smoke coming from it.... Need to do a leakdow, but guessing a crank seal letting trans oil burn... Either way, a like new engine has to be rebuilt because it sat too long. :bang:

The same time I bitch about too many projects.....I get an offer I can't pass up.

1983 CB1100F.....one year only model....
Makes 20 more HP than the new CB1100 Honda produced....progress.
Not a Honda guy, so not sure if I'm going to have it long, but always liked the 1100 version. If I keep it, first thing is a repaint back to original red/white...
Although, if I do keep it I might turn it into a CB1100R if I find a deal on the aluminum factory tank.

Recommended break in is complete.
Time to step things up.
Ti pipe and race map tune...

Dyno testing shows an average of 12-14 extra HP at the rear tire with this combo....on top of the 217 at the crank

As I briefly mentioned last year, that I had gone to Bonneville as a bucket list item I had to do. Initially the plan was to take my RGV VJ21-SP, but time and Covid changed that, and I eventually took my Hayabusa instead in 2021. Bonneville was also where I wanted to spread my dads ashes, as it is the birthplace of speed, and my dad lived to go fast.
I finally put together a very short clip of that together.

Bonneville was rained out in 2022, but I am hoping I can have the $$$ and logistics figured out to be there to go faster in 2023

Swapped out the velocity stacks on my RSV4 a while back, and reprogrammed it again.
Not that I needed the few extra HP....but I thought I did

Removed some unneeded euro5 emission crap.

Then wired in a tether kill going into my kickstand wiring to get through tech at top speed events.

I put a number on it...

Was able to pull a 160.26 out of it on the 1/2 mile run.
Pretty average, but I'm over 60 and haven't run on a dragstrip in well over 25 years.
Not happy, but satisfied.

Bike was more optimistic

I was using the Indy Airstrip Attack as a test run with the bike, as well as testing me, on hanging onto something with close to 210HP at the tire. I saw where Bonneville got rain when the SCTA was setting up and running... the track looked awful with a rough pot holed surface. I kinda figured that the AMA might call it when it was their turn several week later to run. The extra rain made it official.
I think I'm starting to get old though as the RSV4 pulls so damn intense that I question my ability to keep it held down and straight at full throttle in 6th... on the salt...
Even though the bike has wings on the front, it was still feeling pretty light at the airport.
But I'm addicted to how it sounds and pulls, which is why my strokers have been collecting dust.

Finally got one of my runs on my YouTube channel. Not the best one, because my camera was dead by the time I was able to figure out how to get the bike off the line.
