It's a former race bike judging by all the safety ware and it has definitely been crashed. Also came with a front faring with numbers on it. It was gone thru by the late Rick Lance and the motor is solid. Starts and runs great, I been after it for 3 years and I finally made a deal. Marsencini mag rear wheel gsxr750 front end, Tommy Crawford pipes, LG filters and jets. Needs tires and bodywork, I will probably try the Chinese replica bodywork to start with. I am over the moon with this bike!! The king has arrived

Very nice Ian! Can't wait to see it done up. Joe Barlow from FL had both his Gamma 500 and RZ500 at the Gap last week. I roomed next to him and Zammy so yes, I did drool a lot.  :righteous:

I threw a new set of bridgstpne battlax tires on it and some new silencers. The old ones were in rough shape. Gonna take it for a short test ride this afternoon. I've ordered Chinese bodywork so we'll see how that goes. It's looking good and it sounds so great!

My first impression is WOW! What a great bike, pulls nice down low but at 7k it get real. Very strong up to about 10k and it's signing off but whew boy it's fast! Handles pretty damn well for a 35 year old bike. Now bodywork

You have the right pipes Crawford pipes make good usable power.
Rick was a friend miss him yelling at me for touching his bikes. I have done a few RG's in my past. I like them over RZ's way simpler. I am a RD guy so Yamaha is my staple. But Dam those thing go fast.....

Will be watching your progress.

The RG has been on my list since 85.
I almost had an RG500 myself, but the deal fell through when the guy saw the market going up.
So I bought my RZV500R, and doubt I'll ever have the spare cash after building that, for a RG now
Genuine engine parts are slowly drying up, but there are enough people out there who still have bits for them.....at a price.
I found several of my bikes here on this Japanese site....as well as all the spares I have for my home market bikes.

This is a RG500 link

After some diagnosis I have found that my powervalve servo is not working. It passes half of the bench tests but fails in the bike. Does anyone know if the can be repaired? Who does work on them? Anyone have a spare they will part with? Thanks -Ian

Zeel ignition.
Fully programable, and cheaper than finding the right used box.

I got my Chinese bodywork, it looks killer imo. The paint is very nicely done!

I also stripped the motor and sent the cranks and top end to Ed Toomey for a rebuild. This bike had been seriously abused. I had to weld this cylinder up where someone pryed on it and created a huge air leak!

Initially you said the bike was running good.
Did the air leak from the cylinder base cause a melted piston ?
Title: Re: Rg500
Post by: 2 Stroke Jamoke on July 11, 2021, 09:02:28 PM
Lucky for me it did not blow up, it would not take the gas, it would buck and cough like it was running out of fuel. Strange symptoms cause it would run ok sometimes. But I did a leakdown on it and found this leak and another on cylinder 2. This bike did run and seemed fine bit as usual it was hiding gremlins. Gonna be super awesome when it's right

Fairingmaster they're outta China, did a fantastic job on tge paint 10 outta 10. the fit is probably a 8 outta 10, good but a little fiddling required. I expected that part but the paint blew me away

Considering where you got it from are you surprised it has had a hard life?

I would not have said the PO would have done any hack work though. Wrung its neck? Oh yes. Definitely.

Looking forward to seeing it next May.

It always kills me; we pay these craftsmen to assembly beautiful crankshafts, port cylinders, etc, then bolt them all together where they can't be seen. Maybe that's why my projects take so long to assemble?
Love this build, and envious of that Gamma!

A post from the man himself! I actually got to meet Ed in person and check out his shop. Some real dreambikes in there boys let me tell ya! A few tz250s of various years (like jewelry) more rzs than I have ever seen in one place and a treasure trove of parts and machinery. Ed Toomey is a class act and was very welcoming, I hung out for an hour or two and it was a blast!

The bike ride beautifully on my first ride, I just barely touched the power, safe to say it's got alot. I have some semi synthetic oil in for the first tank then I'm going full synthetic. Any break in tips?

It's a cover, I just went for a 30 mile or so ride and I let it rip a few times (or more) it's unreal! It's everything I wanted it to be, fast and rowdy. Just like me

Our if all the 2 Stroke street bikes I've ridden. That's the "one". Ad you know once I hits the mid range, it's a instantaneous BANG It's transformed into a different machine. Its a rapid charge of wheel lifting acceleration. You'd never know you were on the same bike.
The RZ500 tried in vain, but was no comparison..not even close. It was a heavy, complicated mess. The RG..Got it right. Styling if course we t to the RZ, but riding both sides by side..there's only 1 choice for sport riding. Such a shame they were never legally imported here. America .got the shaft big time the rest of the world enjoyed the best ever 2 strokes...America was censored, restricted and governed to the 750 4 as stroke platform.

I found my friend a running Gamma track bike for below 4k, He's stoked..
Ed Toomey had beenrebuilding his motor, should be ready soon. After that it's going into a one-off hand built aluminum frame carbon fiber rims Mark dent pipes and Kevin Schwantz's actual+ ,(team Suzuki)  RGV body work..it's gonna be awesome
I also found him an rz500 track bike for 3K.. it has undergone a 5-year modification process which will soon be ready as well with a very similar state of build I just want to ride each one once.

Enjoy that thing!  They sound great and it has an uncanny ability to be two bikes in the same chassis.
Tame or ferocious.
