Title: Rd400 horn is so weak
Post by: rd400greenhorn on June 28, 2021, 06:56:42 AM
Yes so my brand new horn.. Hardly says anything on a fully charges battery.

Why? 🤔

I have messed with the bolt that hold the face on and it will change a little but not much.
I want a horn like I have on my Goldwing.

I'd like the same. At least to have one of the two tones. Thinking of trying GL1800 breakers.

BTW, there is an adjustment screw on the back that you can use to vary the frequency a bit.

I've used these and they seem to work good and are loud. They come in high or low tone.

Jump it straight to a battery to see if it makes real noise without any of the circuitry.  I'd think a new horn should be loud as F.  I've got quite a few old ones lying around here and they have to be pretty trashed before theyre not loud.  Air horns typ need a relay iirc.

If youd rather, or if its easier, press the button and measure V at the horn, compare to what the battery reads, could be losing juice on the way.  Straight to the battery with a good connection eliminates all guessing about how loud it should be.

You might need to cobble a bracket and it won't look exactly the same, but GL1800 horns are loud and plentiful on ebay.

Connect it directly to a battery to see if it will "honk". If not, then do what PID suggested, the screw will adjust the contact breaker and impact the sound.

A modification that I did not make to my original RD (in the 70's) was a louder horn. It would have just alerted Charleston drivers to nearby prey, anyway. Now they occasionally cause a driver to look up from whatever they are doing that is obviously NOT driving. The original Yamaha horn is barely more than a scooter horn. So, I went with a horn demonstrated to get attention - one from a GL1800 GoldWing! Was able to use the same bracket and wire connectors, but bent the bracket about 5 degrees more to clear a sound short to the frame.
