Title: Rack
Post by: RDFL on October 27, 2021, 05:30:34 PM
Someone is making racks for RD's.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/274471492687

interesting. indian, so would def fit a radjoot. Not sure of the back end differences between those and 73-75's. almost worth it to to just try out.

I saw these and thought it might be worth a try too. I dunno. These racks are shorter and fit over the taillight, Also it seems like it has a spring-tension holder of some sort on it.

ive seen those spring clamps on other racks, different bikes. looks like a big ass mouse trap but i could see where they would be useful.  wouldnt mind one on the r5 actually. the old school one i have is wayyy too long IMHO.

i threw in an offer. If they bite i'll buy. Im not expecting anything great at 50 ish bucks especially out of India, but sometimes you get lucky.

IMHO, a rear rack is the most useful add-on to a daily driver. Add a long bungee wrapped around it and you can strap most anything to it.

I would imagine plating probably very thin, but rack itself strong enough.

Any chance these would fit on a 400F?

The rear cowl flips with the seat, so probably not.

I am in the process of designing one for the 400F, as to allow the seat & cowl to still flip.

Why wait for the arrival of the rack, or racks.

Kawtriplefreak, I think you should get one.  Racks are always better in pairs.

Mounting part looks the same, so should fit.

The second one looks better without the rattrap bit, but the mounting lugs look a little wimpy.

I think one of these will be a welcome addition to the ole' sleeper whenever I can dig everything back out in my garage. Anyone who's ever moved a woman... I think will understand.
Title: Re: Rack
Post by: m in sc on November 03, 2021, 10:23:40 AM
the reason i went with the 'mouse trap' unit is not because of that, but the upright loop at the front. its better for holding stuff from sliding around the rack IMHO.  This, if good, will go on the 70 R5 and i will shelve the period rack i have that again, is way, way too long.
If the mousetrap part is too annoying, i'll just remove it. :science:

speaking of racks... new computer hauling yesterday.

oh I sat on one of those trail 125's at the dealer last week. How do you like it M?
Title: Re: Rack
Post by: m in sc on November 03, 2021, 11:06:40 AM
love it.

is it slow? yes. can you hot rod it? not much. But its fun, great for in town, i can just hit under 60 reliably most times, but 50-55 is about tops. handles fine, you can hoon on it a bit off curbs etc. great for events and the accessories are ridiculous (scope). but, 100+ mpg.

Thats pretty good. I have only bought a few things from India, but shipping has taken 2 months or more.
Title: Re: Rack
Post by: m in sc on November 10, 2021, 02:31:10 PM
so i get a notice today that the shipment is arriving late, but then showed up. fed ex...  :dawg:

So, i looked at the rack. the plating is shiny and pretty. it also doesn't have a single right angle on it anywhere. man this thing is just fabrication garbage. However, i can work with it. hard to see in the pics, but one leg was angled in like 12 degrees and nothing is straight.. and it was def made this way. the box had zero damage. I think the person that built it used his foot as a fixture & really was inspired by tim burtons architectural eye.. Holy shit. its so bad its funny but like said, i can probably get it sorted.

Yet again confirming what i expected out of India for 50 bucks.  At least they chromed the leftover mig whiskers nicely. :love eyes:

In the pics, i had already straightened out the back right support quite a bit. its the mildest steel (?) ever, bent up easy. like, too easy. lol.

IF you dont mind reworking a few things, id recommend it. no way this would have bolted right on, i checked with the 75 thats here.  was way too crooked.

enjoy:

(admittedly it looks better in the pics)

The rack is ok, but a "saree guard" is what you really need to complete the look.

so i mounted this turd up last night.

1st, i had to flatten the slotted tabs that went to the 10mm grabrail bolts.  then i had to twist the steel bar it was on about 15 degrees.. i cant believe the plating hasn't flaked off (yet) I still had to bend the RH lower part out more, then tweak the shit out of the left and the ears to get it sort of straight. luckily i have soft jaws for the vice so i didnt damage the plating. The mousetrap hinge thing is a whole other ball of wax. pretty sure thats going to go away, and the tabs that it pivots on will be bent down to become hooks for small bungees. I did decrease the tension by bending the springs a bit but its just fucked.

the top bar is just crooked as hell. the 2 legs under the top are unequal length and the top bar is 5 or so degrees off. my plan is to cut it down a bit as its also ridiculously tall, and re attach it -level- to the stubs left on the main structure.

I rode the t500 yesterday, so i had a rack on rack incident to get it home. the quality of the 50 year old nos rack on the t500 vs this pile of scrap is pretty funny.

this is it in all its glory.  :haw: :clownshoes:

Sweet. I just passed on a decent used one ( not from India) on flea Bay. It had wooden slats for cross pieces.

yeah, i'm no fan of the 'wood' ones. the old all steel one i had on there (still have) may go back on at some point. its good, just a mile long. Or maybe i'll make one out of stainless down the road. not sure. cant be worse than this thing.  :dawg:

Rack's catch a lot of flack, but anyone who rides further than the local Starbucks knows their value.

I've done over 100mph on my TDR with 2 cases of beer on the rack.

Not known for my wise decisions.

so, i finally gave in and cut the upper loop off and made a low-bar to tie shit to. there was just no saving the original one. so i drilled out the bar where the tube came into, and then masked off and painted (silver) the tops so it wont rust that fast. then took a solid bar of stainless and some long m6 coupling nuts, sort of coped them with the die grinder and then turned the end down so it would slip into the rack stubs. cut the stainless bar and faced it on the lathe. tacked the upper bar on, took it back off, welded it and then cleaned it up.  bolted back in thru drilled holes with m6 counterink screws. Its very solid. also man-handled the mousetrap a bit more and got it straighter.  :toot:

I have a period rack and fiberglass, top loading panniers for my RD. The original owner (my cousin) had them on the Bike from when he bought it in 75. The top surface is flat, but unfortunately the most forward cross bar interferes with opening the seat, so I do not use this rack.
