Title: 75 RD60
Post by: mills on July 26, 2022, 09:36:59 PM
I like the lines. Most everything was OK, just needed cleaning. I'm just gonna ride it like it is for a while. First road test coming up as soon as weather cools a bit. Faded tank paint must have a clear coat over it.

2000 miles, very original. They say its only original once but I really want to shorten rear fender and use small brake light. I was going to switch to flat bars but found wires routed inside OEM bars so I'll wait to do that mod later. Nope, I'm gonna mess with it. Oh, and paint, can't ride a bike with faded paint can I?

I WOULD FIND A SPARE REAR FENDER TO CUT UP. those bikes are exceedingly rare these days. I love modifying stuff maybe more than anyone but its going to be absolutely worthless if you cut it up.  :twocents: But, its your bike so.

Yes, I bought a damaged fender to cut up. All the paint buffed real well but tank has clearcoat to cut through before paint can be buffed. I might as well paint it. I dig that Dodge F8 green with maybe some simple decals in black?

Wet sand, cut and buff the paint, or redo the stock paint.

Anything else would ruin it.

Wow. I respect your input. Maybe a rethink is in order? If I cut thru the clear to buff the oem red then I'll have to reapply clear to protect it, right?

correct. I mean, if it's shot and not saveable kind of a different story but I try to save em when they are that complete if can

I'd live with the fading and just return the shine to the clearcoat.

^ same.

You don't need to sand thru the clear. Just wet sand to cut back the oxidation, then wax/buff the sh!t out of it.

It's not faded, that's "patina".

EDIT:  The paint on my KH looked like hell when I got it.  The clear was half gone.  I did as above, and it ended up looking pretty damn good.

I wish there was a spec for oil pump output, not just a minimum gap. I added a bit of oil to gas just for this first tank. Headed out in an hour for first run on the street.

There is a spec for oil pump output. Do you have the factory service manual? I'll check my files and see if I have anything for the baby RD, but I don't have the factory manual for that one.

On a side note, the attached may be helpful if you don't already have it.

Woo Hoo! Jetting is pretty close with a 105 main, #25 pilot jet, needle clip in second groove and a little clamp on air filter. Shocks are wasted, but I'll fix that. I tried looking for oil pump spec I saw for my RD400 to use as a guide but no luck yet. I'll give cutting the clearcoat a try this weekend. I'm sorry, but I have to redo the rear fender and brake light, but I'll try to make y'all proud.

This is going to be very delicate work getting the tank paint buffed. It sure looks like its the clear that has clouded up. In the spot I tried it didn't turn red until clear was gone. The possibility of rubbing through the paint worries me but I guess its a risk I have to take. If it works the bike will be stunning!

Tank paint too far gone, so I repainted it. Not my best effort. Got it out on the road yesterday and it runs clean but 40-45 mph is as fast as it will go. I'm going to investigate that this weekend. I have to say that I am disappointed in the performance, I might be a minimum 20 horsepower kind of guy.

Not saying it's a guarantee, but you might find interested buyers here if you decide to sell it ...

well, i'll eat crow, it looks good.   :toot:

yeah.. they are def slow. i know you can do stuff to make them faster, but maybe its time to sell and 'upsize'. should be able to make money on a running rd60.

Thanks. That Sunshine Red is a funky color, almost a raspberry. I feel bad because I always liked the looks of the tank and tail section. Let's see if I can get it to pull top gear all the way and then I'll re-assess. Time to do some plug chops!!!

I saw this in owner's manual. The line for 5th gear is funny, "40mph or more" It looks like 42mph is about as good as I could expect, I'm 205 lbs. It pulls redline in all but 5th gear.
