Title: What did you do to your 2T today?
Post by: pdxjim on July 07, 2019, 02:19:48 AM
Thread idea stolen from Norbo's rdlccrazy.proboards.com forum.

Just post up whatever you did with your bike(s) today.  A few words, a lengthy essay, pics, whatever.

This thread is what you make it, hopefully it'll catch on.

I'll start:

I'm in the process of prepping my KTM 300xcw for our annual dualsport-lite moto-camping trip.  Usually about ten days and around 1000mi.  Generally roughly following the BDR routes.  Last year we trucked the bikes up to the Canadian border and rode back to Portland.  The year before, we trucked down to Klamath Falls, OR near the California border and rode back to Portland.  Next Satuday 7/13, we'll load 8 bikes int a U-haul truck and drive over to Boise, ID.   From there we'll ride North to Cour d'Alene taking the IDBDR route ridebdr.com  We'll rough camp every night except for the last two at Gold Creek Lodge.  Then another U-Haul back home.

Anyway, today I fit the big 4gal tank and the cushy seat, changed the oil, lubed the chain, went thru the camping stuff and pulled out a few items to bring, spliced together a couple of Battery Tender cables so I can easier charge my phone on the road, cleaned the air filter, etc.  Basic bike prep.

Tomorrow I gotta go to Cycle Gear and get some NoToil filter oil, and maybe some 2T oil.  Then I'll fit the Mosko Moto saddlebags and tank bag and go thru my riding gear.

Here's a pic of the bike fully loaded last year:

Tried to make my 1973 seat more comfortable with some new padding but it was a failure because it felt the same. Looks like I will just purchase a new seat.

I polished it up and did the obligatory throttle jerk before putting it away.

Thanks for playing Jeff!  Your 400 looks and sounds great! So clean!

I battled with my KTM 300xcw some more.

When I put the big DS tank on yesterday, I noticed the float valve appeared to be stuck, so it was pissing fuel.

Of course, I whacked on the float bowl, but couldn't get it to stop leaking.  I've had this 2013 bike since about 2015 or maybe 2016 and have never touched the carb.  I managed to get the float bowl off without pulling the carb all the way and cleaned out the needle and seat and buttoned it back up.  Somehow I managed to lose a float bowl screw, so had to run to the hardware store for a replacement set.  Should have just pulled one off my disused LC carbs but don't wanna start cannibalizing it ... yet.

FACK!! Still leaking, so I wrangled the carb out, stripped all the jets, gave it a bath in the ultrasonic for :30 minutes, blew it all out,  reassembled it, loosened up the subframe on the bike, and wedged the carb back in.  Phew, looks like I fixed it.

Fcuking wasted most of the day farting around learning how to clean the carb on my dirtbike that I've owned for three years without ever messing with.  Can't complain really.  This bike has been 98% reliable since the day I bought it with almost no maintenance other than changing the oil and lubing the chain.  Somewhere around 5000miles and almost 300hours on it now.

And it's STREET PLATED in Oregon which ain't easy.

I should probably do the top end this winter, but I'm sure I won't.

My view today:

I cut up my Jemco exhaust chamber on the DT250 to get it to tuck under the frame and clear the tire better... tacked it up, and built rubber mounted frame mounts.  :cheerleader:

Ok, I have 2 questions for Organic Jedi....

1: How is your bike so damn tidy? Seriously, that thing is gorgeous. Soooooo clean.

2: Will you start a new thread and walk dummies like me on the process of how to post such large pics? Mine all come out like this...

The bike is a result of a complete restomod. I had a thread on the old forum. I intend to put up a condensed version of the thread to show the transformation and to share sources of help (huge thanks to JSpooner). My "secret" cleaner is kerosene. The stuff works great. I fill up a spray bottle and arm myself with some rags and brushes. For finishing touches, some wax, chrome polish, and plastic/ vinyl cleaner make it really shine. I know Spooner uses gas on his stuff. That works great too.

For the pictures, I downloaded the Tapatalk app and connected it to my account on the forum. It makes uploading pictures really easy. I don't think it navigates the forum as well as the browser though.

I know, right?

The special reason is it's only $13/qt at the BRP Skidoo/Can-Am dealership down the street from my house.

Motul 710 is like $19 and I gotta drive all the way across town for it

Assembled up this bottom end, drilled the exhaust bridge lube holes & fitted the cylinder. Waiting for the viton o-ring for the custom crankseal holder to finish it off. Still to decide on stock or period aftermarket head

This video is garbage but it's the first drive in 40 years for my father's Suzuki powered D Sports Racer. We missed the practice last week so we used our friends driveway for some low speed checks. I'll have at least two cameras in the car for the race weekend, which on the streets of Pittsburgh this weekend, so hopefully I'll get some footage with good sound and picture. We will probably be one of two two strokes in the event.

I also have my wife's RD125 running. I rode it around the block a few times last night. I'll grab some video of that tonight.

Put on an LED headlight- tried the one Mark suggested seems to be working good.

Figured out my mysterious trans oil slow leak was coming from the tach drive (thanks Chuck)- always start at the top when hunting down a leak!

Went for an hour ride to go and rent a movie- Hey, I'm happy to run errands for the wife.

Edit: also replaced my broken hi/ low beam switch. FINALLY found a decent left hand switch for the donor part that didn't cost an arm and a leg. My buddy is still working on making a 3D printed copy.

Not today but Sunday, I was having almost much fun as Jim on my R5, when at almost closed throttle going downhill I hear a horrible ratchet sound then bike dies, pull in clutch release it takes off, runs fine does it again. I pull over let it cool off for a minute and ride the 30 miles home under 5k.  :bang:

So now i get to assess the damage. I can't win lately.

The RD125. https://youtu.be/i_FZBOtluvE

I rode it around the block again. The right side seems a bit fouled, I haven't checked timing. When it cleans out it pulls hard but not for very long, shifts comes really quick and it sure sounds like it's revving high. Those littles pistons really hum. The carbs are as they come straight from China, I have no idea what jets are in them, I haven't looked. But with the DT reed blocks and the new throttle cable the bike starts right up and runs good enough to get around the block. I'm going to check the timing, maybe throw some new plugs in it, and then spend a little time matching the carbs. The oil system seems to be functional, but I'm premix for the time being, working on the carbs is so much easier without the side covers. Pretty cool that it's close considering the loose ends.

Oh, and a while back I posted about needing a lock and key set but didn't get much interest. Suffice it to say, I havent found the keys, and I was quoted $150 just to tear the lock apart, making a new key wasn't included in that price. I took the gates out of the lock in like 10 minutes. For now it will be run with a screw driver. It's a bummer though because the key worked the seat, ignition, and fuel cap. I'd love to get a key made.

Will do! We are super excited! The car seems to work really well already, a weekend of driving, and some time to tweak on it and the car is going to be incredible. The Water Buffalo sounds mean and when it gets on the pipe really pulls. The VM38's (over the 34's), electronic ignition, and slightly altered stingers mean it's rev thirsty too. It pulls right to 7,500 and I'm sure it would go further. The track awaits.

I apologize to the members here for blowing this thread up single handedly, but I was stewing on this and so I walked out to the garage. Sure enough, the key code is stamped on the gas cap lock. I never thought to look there until now, chalk this one up to inexperience on my part. I'll order from the eBay fellow tonight.

For this era of car the Water Buffalo was a popular choice. Saabs were also popular, but there were a number of other engines used as well. In the "D" sports racer category the maximum displacement was 850cc, at least if you wanted to run with an NO minimum weight. You could run as high as 1300cc, but there was a minimum weight, I forget what that number is. The car originally was well under 1000lbs with driver and fuel, but with modern safety equipment it has gained some weight.

Rules changes and changing technology changed the landscape quickly though. Today the class has been morphed into a slightly different formula, but bike engines still rule the roost.

The car drew a lot of attention, we almost needed a velvet rope around the thing. We probably let 50 kids sit in it, it was a good time despite the 95 degree heat.

Whoa lotsa hard targets (lampposts, curbs, etc ...)on that track.

Is that on public streets?

Yes, it uses the streets inside a park in the city of Pittsburgh. A large part of the course is lined by a golf course, can be seen drive left about half way through the video. There are a number of tall stone walls, trees, etc.. Thousands of spectators come to watch the races. Crashes, as you might imagine, can be very serious and several have died. For the most part though, people treat the weekend as an exhibition and drive within their means. The track is to be taken seriously, but it's a major thrill when driven at the limit. I hold a lap record there in one class.

We made it out. The only 2t in the event. We had a bunch of troubles, mostly brake related. The video is of my best lap, which was not a good lap by an standard, but the car does run.

That's just Awesome right there.
Years ago we had a ton of fun running SCCA Solo2 events. So much so that we built a C-Prepared Z28 and started running Solo1.
Been getting the itch to build another car and get back into it. Thanks for the nudge ;)

I washed my KTM and Mosko Moto luggage, and almost painted my LC sidecovers.

But ran out of time, so didn't.

Maybe,

Nothing!

But, I did prep a borrowed Honda 919 for our yearly Gold Rush Ride out to eastern Oregon.

Lots of deferred maintenance on this old klunker, so I ... adjusted and lubed the chain, adjusted the clutch, pumped up the tires to 30/32, installed a Battery Tender dongle and handlebar bag (fanny pack) so I can charge my phone and listen to tunes while I ride, installed my Mosko Moto DS saddlebags ... etc.

While doing all this, I noticed the clutch cable is frayed and down to only a few strands at the lever.  I'll call around for a new cable tomorrow, but of course it's doubtful anyone will have one in stock.

I'll probably chance it.  Only about 750 miles an most of it is 2 lane highway.  Only time I gotta use the clutch is starting and stopping

Lol!  Clutch cable broke about three miles from town on the way out there and I managed to limp it into town with vice grips and cable ties.  The only tools I brought!

well seeing as how you asked...
I got it running for the first time in months. My power dynamo ignition fell apart during a ride at the gap with Chuck.
Thanks to Chuck and John at EC they warrantied it. So I loaded up my RD in my truck and headed to see my friend Chuck in Clearwater.
While I was down there Chuck also did some work and got the gold valves and new springs onto the bike as well. And seeing as how it was not dark yet, we did a 520 chain conversion. All that and I was able to spend the day with my friend and learn a lot from the guy who has a tool for everything. No really he does. I am going to get him a shirt that says, "I have a tool for that".

First 2 rides were nice but not on a road I would be able to tell. I can tell when the wheel comes back down in 1st and second, no longer bottoms out.

I am just so happy to get it running again. Chuck also drilled and taped for a steering dampener and told me to order one. So that's next.

Trying to get motivated to get back to my LC build.  After what feels like an eternity, it sounds like Chuck may be almost done working his magic, and ready to send my LC cylinders and head back.

To celebrate, I pressured washed the LC chassis, then dried it off with a 2T leaf blower 👍

I should also say that my dad rode the 400 for the first time today since the restomod. He was the original owner of the bike and was blown away by how well it rides now. He said and I quote "it got to 70 so fast and I was only in 3rd gear. But the bike feels solid." He then commented on how light the front end felt when accelerating and how well it handled. BTW- this is with Chuck's stage 1 setup with stock Dave F modded carbs. :celebrate:

Not today, but yesterday.  Trailered my RD400 and Honda 350F up to Ohio to ride with my brother on his Offbrand CB350.  For quite a while now my RD would not idle with the headlight on and not keep the battery charged and I simply figured it was time for brushes and a perhaps a new voltage regulator.  While on the ride I let my nephew ride the RD so I could give it a good look over from the sides and rear.  Soon, every time he would hit the brake the engine would sputter. Then the bike started not running at all with the headlight and tail light on.  So I had him turn everything off and we headed back to the barn.  But then when he would turn either blinker on the bike would die.  So we had him go all electrics off and he made it back to my brother's house.

We suspected a bad ground so I popped the headlight off and started wiggling wires.  Once in a while I could get the neutral and oil light to illuminate but it was very sporadic.  I shook and cleaned every connection in the headlight bucket but could not keep the dash lights on steady.  My brother started pinching the wire harness at the bucket and worked his way back.  Down under the tank, about even with the spark plug he was able to start making the dash lights come on steady.  He took an X-acto knife and cut the sheathing around the wire harness and there he found the red power supply wire with a tiny bit of old electric tape on it.  He carefully pulled the tape off and there the wire was corroded in two.  The sheath had a lot of water in it that had been in there for a while as it was all rusty colored.  The red wire had not been spliced but just a nick in the insulation.  It appears that at some point during the production line the wire was nicked and taped over.  After all these years it finally corroded through and the wire burned in two pieces.

My brother carefully stripped the wire as there wasn't enough slack to waste any, and put a water proof butt splice on, then heat shrinked that, then with self sealing vinyl tape did a very professional job of sealing the wire harness back up.  As an added bonus, he took some wire he had and stripped the insulation off that and put it in the harness sheath as a drain in case water ever got in there again.  During the long ride that followed, I had full use of the headlight and tail light, all blinkers worked as advertised and my brother said the headlight was brighter than he'd ever seen it.  As a bonus, when we returned, the battery was fully charged and showing 13 volts after I shut it off.  It runs crisper, starts much better and it will beat the dickens out of those 2 off brand CB350s 8-)

What I did was change head and base gaskets on my 400.
I was chasing an exhaust leak and found it between my head and cylinder about a month ago.
I failed to check head bolts.
My buddy Chuck Supertune came up for a visit. He helped (ok did it) change gaskets.
After he was done we went for a little ride.
Went from my house in Newnan (south of Atlanta) to LaGrange and West Point lake.
To Callaway Gardens then  Pine Mountain / FDR park little White House.  Then to Gay GA and back to Newnan. 190 miles in about 5 hrs. All back roads.
Bike ran much better. Bask gasket likely was blown out from my not checking it.
Next day was rain and Chuck spend a few hours tweaking my bike (jetting and front end) and teaching me about jetting. Wow. A lot to understand how all of the jets work together and what jets effect what symptoms.
Next day we only rode 60 miles. We waited until it warmed up to 50 degrees.
My bike it so much smother with the very small jet change he made.
Great weekend!

Nice! My kids never cared. None ride. And honestly that is a good thing for me.
Too dangerous unless you ride defensively all the time.  I have no idea why my mom let me get one at 15 and a half with a learners permit.
Teach him well.

Getting ready to pack 'em up for shipping to EE.

... and yeah, my 10yo daughter loves to go for rips around the neighborhood on my bikes with me.  She really wants a minibike or something.  Too big for a PW50, but I've been looking for a cheap one to get her out on.  Seems like the tiny size and twist'n'go power would be a soft entry for her.

Found this at a local yard sale a few weeks ago.

Rad!  That's an OG classic, and not a re-issue.  Prob worth some pretty good money if you're looking to flip it.   Curtis Hsaing and Bill Hanley killed the local NorCal backyard pools on those decks.  That's a real survivor, great score!

The Douglas only brought $135ish on Ebay.  A little disappointing, but I'm deep into SELL EVERYTHING mode, so relying on volume, not individual sales.

LOL. might have to sell my daughter's Redline Proline JR next.

Love the board sales for 2stroke works!
It is hard for me to let go of boards.
I have been breaking down my RD350 AIR/LC.
I kept trying to ride it. And, the tires are toast. Plus, the water pump is done.
Also, the last picture shows the split down tube. And, I have ripped the motor mounts multiple time. The right side has a whole new mount.

Bought it a front master cylinder on eBay from Germany, 11mm Aprilia RS125 piece. It will need a lever and undoubtedly a rebuild, but it should be the right diameter to give a satisfying braking experience when combined with the Brembo caliper above.

No, I've ridden it a few hours. The timing was wrong at .2 btdc for an hour of running on the table before I figured it out.

Check to make sure the pump is giving an output.
Has it just nipped on one side?

Whatever it was, looks like you got off easy.

No piston destruction means crank and bottom end are likely ok.
Title: Re: What did you do to your 2T today?
Post by: Greaser Greg on February 16, 2020, 10:02:40 PM
I haven't checked the pump yet, but one of the Pistons was a little tight in the cylinder as I swapped in an matching art piston to replace one from hvc after it had been bored, with just a hone to get it within spec. Forget which side it was, but have a good guess!
Yeah, dodged a bullet for sure with the intact piston. Just a little aluminum stuck to the cylinder walls, and some shiny stripes, so am thinking just try and clean it up at same size.  :umm: :help:
Anybody think that piston is salvageable? The rings def got some wear on them but not terrible. Is it just plain stupid to try and use them? Dykes style rings, if I can find any, are ridiculously priced on eBay, around $100! I think I paid $27 each for two sets last year.
Title: Re: What did you do to your 2T today?

If there is oil then the piston did not have enough clearance(not run in enough), as for cleaning up the piston, give it a go, it will only be noisy .
Did you use mineral or synthetic two stroke after the rebuild?

I would toss that piston also. Muriatic acid is cheap and will dissolve aluminum smeared on a cylinder wall; you might be able to avoid boring.

I was thinking more along the lines of an ashtray, but I like the trophy idea: First seized piston!
I guess if it was an old lawnmower I'd feel better about trying to use it. With a $500 crank beneath it, not so good. :taz:

Yes, just the right side. One piston was a bit tight as I swapped in an Oem for aftermarket after it was bored, so tried to make it work with a hone. Yes, the pump has been tested more than once so I doubt that was it. Will have another look at it though.

Cast pistons with TODAY's modern ethanol fuels need .002-.0022 piston to wall on new pistons at minimum,
They will run at .0025-.0027 with no issues.
Also I've always preached to scotch-brite off the breakin coatings at your piston measurement location so you don't boore it too big and have too much piston to wall clearance after the coating wears off. (approx. 1000 miles)

Played with TDR250 reed cages and files.

Since I've been running the stock 31year old reed petals, and there are no aftermarket reed cages to fit the 1KT motor, I had my friend Martin Johnson (Martin77) cut a set of his CF reeds and send me some tips on modding the stock cages to flow a bit better.

I'll be going back to stockish jetting (been at 230 main will go back to 210.  upping pilot one step to 22.5 from 20).

Zeel CDI is on order.

Should be a fun summer.  Looking forward to a bit more power out of the ol' TDR.

Need to get some hardware to mount everything still and find the locations to mount the other bits in the kit. I put a new rear sprocket on my RD250. The old one really wasn't that old at all but when I rebuilt the bike I made the mistake of going a tooth smaller in the rear on a pretty much stock bike to boot because I wanted a long lasting anchor weight made of steel and I couldn't get the stock 40t size from HVC Cycles. Simply unavailable unless you go aluminum which I probably should've but anyways I found a NOS 40t on Ebay so that's fine and should restore some pep.

I also put a new rear tire on the bike, a Shinko brand 712R. The front tire is an AVON roadrider and is still in very nice shape, I know it's kinda a no no to mix brands but the Shinko was again a pretty good deal from EBay. Unfortunately since a always seem to get frustrated with spooning new and old tires off wheels I took the wheel and new tire to the stealership and wouldn't you know it they put the tire on backwards :bang: :bang: Of course I didn't notice till I got home with it paid for and mounted. :bang: :bang: Kinda thought about sum and decided that since here in Ma. we now have non essential store closings and I really don't plan on riding in the rain as well as the tire being totally overrated for the power of my little 250 that I will just live with the mistake. Unless one of you fellas tells me otherwise however it would take a lot of convincing since I went ahead and put the wheel back on the bike.  :dawg:  :dawg:

Yeah I think your right I keep looking at it smiling at me. Supposed to frown god dammit. Not to mention how much money they charge just to do it. Seriously though does it really make that much of difference. I googled this question and the answers are so varied. Some say it's designed so the tread pattern throws the water away to prevent hydroplaning. OTOH some say the arrows are there because it has something to with the construction of the three plies layup direction, as if it's mounted in the wrong direction the tire will wear prematurely. However I also read that it's theoretically impossible for a round tire to hydroplane. Also  there are cheapskates who ride the track and claim they will remount a tire the opposite direction if a track has more turns to the left hence you wear one side of the tire more than the other. Many have said that they've had this mistake and just live with it and never really notice a difference. I just don't know except it's one of those things thats kinda like the spite of it. Pathetically speaking from my own personal experience riding bikes I seem to get about three thousand miles or so and the tires wear down to the wear bars right in the middle about an inch either left or right of center. Me not wanting to let the tire get to far beyond (seems a safety issue??) I'll replace it which always seems a shame but I really just don't seem to hit enough bends in those 3 thousand miles of riding.

I try not to over think it but this is one of those things where I bruise my ego on so many levels.  :-[

Holy F#$K!  Got the HPI to fire today. Quarantine is kind of a blessing i guess.  The resources here are amazing. Thanks Chuck and Mark. I read the Team scream thread a thousand times at least.  And any thread that talked about the HPI. Timing may be a little off (had a hard time with no marking on the rotor and clocking it without a key) but its runnin! Now to sort out the rest of this beauty. Things like cutting the chain to length. 91 links plus master? Getting the lights wired, figure out a seat etc. etc. Anyway I'm super stoked to get on with it all.

@ lawnboy : nice!

if oyu have a dial gauge, since its running,y ou can now make timing marks on the rotor and verify timing with a light. pay attention to where the max advance should be, get it to that rpm, and set it there.

My sunday was mostly working on the t500 motor. I got my ass kicked by the kickstart assembly but finally got it together. (its all internal).  I'll post up details in another thread but that design flat out sucks.  :busey:

Nope, for the TDR250!

Rad thing about the TDR one is it's plug n' play, with all the proper connector blocks installed.

He doesn't have a plug n' play LC one yet, but I hope he gets one together soon coz it was super easy to install.

Got a set of lightly scrubbed-in race compound Q3's from a buddy.  110/17 and 150/17 sizes ... perfect for the TDR.

Very soft tires, but he gave me an extra rear, so I should be good for the summer.

Hopefully I can get some miles in this weekend on the street or dirt.  :metal:

What I did today?

I started cleaning the new bike up because yesterday I took a 16hr road trip to pick up another RD400 - So I'm officially back in the 2Stroke game

This bike is a French Blue 1977 one owner with 3K original miles that's been sitting for 28yrs. Not only is it all original but the owner gave me the original sales invoice from time of purchase which was May 1978 and I got the service manual, owners manual, warranty paperwork w/folder and the Yamaha Identification card and to top it off he handed me the original metal can of Yamaha 2 Stroke oil that came with the bike.

A few years ago I got into the K5 & K6 GSXR's and ended up selling my RD - I really got to missing my old RD and knew I had to have another one. So to you guys that are out there thinking of selling your bike DONT do it because trust me you'll wish you hadn't.

Here's a pic of the bike that I took off the computer screen - It's from the online for sale listing

Hello, my name is Wade and I'm a bad two-stroke owner. I did some productive work today and felt it was time to take my wife's suggestion and get my RZ down from the lift and ready to ride to work. In my defense, I assumed the fuel system would need some attention so I started right in pulling the carbs out. Fuel tank: empty. Air filter: dirty. Carburetor bellmouths: dirty. Float bowl drains: open. Peering into the manifolds, I see carbon-fiber reeds. When did I buy those? Thought I had Boyesens.
Carbs off and on the floor (there's a story; I'll tell you someday when we have more time), they're generally grungy, the vent hoses have petrified and they smell faintly of stale gas. #2 phillips deployed and the bowls come off without a struggle, gaskets go in the trash. Interior of, ahh...left? carb is dry with a tiny bit of dusty debris in the bottom of the bowl. Meh. Next door, though...

Not my proudest moment. They'll be swimming in the ultrasonic cleaner Monday morning. Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. Let he among you who is without sin cast the first sta-bil bottle...

It's true.

I really paid the price for my sloth this spring.

TDR carbs were full of that same green varnish.  PJ's clogged.  Air jets clogged.  Float needle valves stuck, etc.  Took a million kicks to start and then would barely run.

Started first kick after a full strip and jiggle in the 'sonic.  Has started first kick ever since.

Hopefully going for a rip around Bull Run or Skyline/Scappoose/ Vernonia with the boys tomorrow afternoon.

That is why I am so grateful I live 400 yards from the local airport where they sell 100 LL Avgas. Minimum 2 year safe shelf life and no ethanol. If I rode as much as I wish I could it would be impractical at $5.10 a gallon. I use it on all my 2 strokes, bikes, weedeater my Lawnboy and chainsaws plus my 1944 Farmall A lawn mowing tractor. I use it as storage fuel in my generators and snow blower. Ethanol is the 😈

Timeline - yesterday.

I nearly finished the oil tank reservoir slotted into the redundant 400/4 airfilter housing air box.....took a cut n shut, but treated to a coat of Wurth and some thin rubber trim to protect the cut edges the alloy tank sits snug.

I rode it- the KTM- with two of my boys, last night and again this evening after work. We picked a little trail through my mother-in-law's clear cut to connect with a trail my youngest and I made in our woods last year. They both did well and we had a good time, and are impressed when I bust out a stoppie! I still have a little cool left in me.

I found the source of my wonky speedometer, the tabs on the speedo drive were slipping in the t500, been chasing that for a few years.  just enough to skip at higher speeds. not a sexy repair but a very satisfying one.

Paul and I spent some time putting finishing touches on the Spondon TZ 350 and the Yamaha TR3 getting them ready for the Concours de Elegance at Barber on July 4th.  Both had complete engine rebuilds but no cosmetic work.  The Spondon wouldn't run right last year and I traced that to ignition problems and the TR3 hadn't been raced since the '90s.

Tried some machining (turning) of the RH fork slider from an XS650C, the last XS with 34 mm fork tubes, same calipers as the RDs, mounted behind the slider. Plan is to turn, mill, file and sand it down to the same diameters as an RD slider.
And use it with a 298 mm ISR disc on the XS carrier, with the RD caliper. Same look as stock, just a 31 mm larger disc.
The alloy was a lot softer than I anticipated, guess the RD sliders are just as soft.

Tweaked my knee at work today, so psyching myself up to pull the forks off my KTM and take 'em to the suspension guy for new seals and new valving.

Besides the pain, I'm bummed coz we we finally scored the georeferenced PDF maps to the secret riding spot out near the coast and were planning on a Saturday morning surgical strike.

Hopefully my knee feels better and I can put off the forks for another week

TDR needs fork seals too.  Had some high 80's temps last weekend and the forks were puking oil out just sitting in the garage on the stand.

First time I've ever seen that happen.

Today, I received 2 rear brake cables from Venhill. The cables are for a mid 70s KX400, but I plan on using them on the RD350 and the XS650. Pulled out the brake plate from my first RD, that I made a cable stopper for sometime back in the 80s........Fiddled a bit with this, before I had to do other stuff.....

Made myself a new aluminum seat / tail to match the tank. Just waiting for the seat foam to arrive. Still needs a little tidying up before clear coat.
The old fiberglass one never really looked right but I trued to copy the same design but it kept twisting, so this one got bent on a little cheapie bending brake.
Tig welding 16ga aluminum definitely had a steep learning curve.

Rode my RZ yesterday, first time in months. The reality of old bike:
Had to clear MORE mouse house from the left Toomey before departing
My home made centerstand stopper fell apart after just 30 years
No tach operation while warming up
8mm motor mount bolt missing, replaced before departing
Dropped into 1st gear so nicely...and stalled. Clutch plates stuck. Le Mans style start needed
Runs good! Sounds nice, crisp throttle response  :celebrate:
No speedometer operation  :umm:
Tachometer woke up after a couple of miles
Realized I hadn't fastened my helmet strap after 3 miles
Who set up this suspension? Jeez, it's stiff. Stupid 20 year-old racer wanna-be
A little freeway? Why not? All six gears work, tested to 10,000 RPM  :vroom:
Topped off with ethanol-free 92
The long way home, many turns...oh yeah, that's why the suspension is stiff!
Right turn signal DOA. Dead bulb in the back
Oops, probably should renew that license tab!
Nothing fell off!
Needs a bath, turn signal bulb, speedo repair, centerstand stopper, tabs, 1/4 turn of the airscrews

Some flies in the ointment, but I was reminded of why I still have this bike after all these years: I enjoy the experience every time. Looks good parked, sounds great, acceleration feels fantastic, stops and turns well, is reasonably comfortable (with clip-ons and rear-sets) and turns heads out in public. If I stop long enough to take off the helmet, there's going to be a conversation!
Nice weather expected here Thursday and Friday, and I should be able to get tabs mailed to me by then, so I'll be riding to work!

I managed a nice evening ride. It cooled off nicely, now in low 80's or so, it was a perfect ride to the observatory and around some of the local twisties. The new shift lever is kick ass, I need to finish the foot pad, I just bolted a piece of junk on there to allow me to ride. But the action is really nice and the feel is great as a result. Of course the petcock is dripping now, I tossed a new seal in it, but it still drips. I'm thinking the wave spring might be crushed.

Of course my wife's car is acting up, it the blower runs slow and the radio is intermittent. When you rev it up, all is fine. Some sort of charging issue I assume, not quite sure where to start. The alternator is new as of a year ago. But it looks like I'll be playing with it instead of motorcycles for the near future.

Finally had enough of the ridiculously stiff shifting of my rearset arrangement (LSL peg and shifter,   Tarozzi knuckle) Just took an old XT 250 shifter, cut it, straightened it, drilled&tapped it M6.
Old knuckle was 42 mm c-c, the new one is 70 mm. LSL shifter has a 55 mm arm, and is around 140 mm long  The new knuckle should result in pretty much the same feel & leverage as a stock shifter, which is 180 mm long, IIRC. Just did a quick test ride, despite rain and low temps. Success :)
This quick fix also confirmed that longer knuckles are preferable, for several reasons.

Bolted up these cheapy Amazon GXSR rearsets and hooked up a cheapy Amazon rear master cylinder.  They work fine for now, but let's see how they hold up in the long run.

Yesterday, I installed the oil pump on the GT200, having primed and bench tested it with an electric drill. It's delivering oil, so it's now in place and synch'd with the throttle slide/position as per the manual.

Today, metail bashing. Andy,my neighbour has acetylene so we heated and spent longer than I thought trying to figure how to shape the kink I needed to clear the exhaust flange bolt on both sides.
Got there in the end.

Took a little trail ride with a friend in Gifford Pinchot national forest, it was a great day!

Mt. Adams behind me, Rainier, St. Helens and Hood all visible from where we were parked at the base of a rock tower called Jumbo. We did 30 miles and met a bunch of cool dirt bikers, bicyclists and a couple of hikers. Lots of late-model KTMs and Husqvarnas, a couple of CRFs and Yamahas. A twenty-something with an e-start KTM 300 asked me: "do you have to kick-start that every time?"!
Funny how many riders of electric-start, fuel-infected bikes commented on what a great bike my old XR200, ridden by my pal Ron, was!
Starting today with Ibuprofen. Won't help the mosquito bites or the sunburnt neck...

Pulled the Derbi out of the back yard shed. Poor little guy has been sitting
there for over two years.
Checked the air filter = perfect condition.
Put in a battery from the TT-R125L.
Squirt a wee bit of Motul800 down the spark plug hole and cycle the piston.
Clutch plates stuck, so put in high gear and push back and forth. fixed.
lift the choke lever, Turn on the key and three kicks later....ring_ding_ding.
:vroom:
Good things happen from time to time.
Now that I know it runs fine, guess I should change all the fluids.
Cheers, Jeff

Got a wild hair up my butt, pulled the '98 GasGas EC250SM out of the back of the garage.
Started to fix the leaky front forks, and before I knew it.....

Looks like I'm going to be doing a complete suspension maint. Change all the fluids
and lube all the linkage bearings.

Good thing as the air filter turned to crumbs as soon as I touched it. Carb is all gum'd up too.

Edit: Aug/12/20
Finished with the quick resto. It was a lot more work than I thought. Rebuilt the F/R suspension.
Linkage bearings. Front brakes were soaked in fork fluid. Rear brake hose and reservoir were
clogged up solid. Had a custom rear brake hose made by a local shop.
Water pump seals failed, now fixed.  Replaced all the fluids. etc....
Time to ride  :vroom:

Today I pulled the RM500 engine out of my 72 TS250, along with the new harness, led lighting etc. and put the 250 engine and associated parts back in. Then I got to ride it :celebrate:.

The RM might eventually go back in if I can find a kick shaft that is longer then stock. I broke a couple of bones in my right foot several years ago and I limp for 3 days after kicking it over a few times. I figure a inch or so longer might give me enough leverage. Now I know why the old kick start Harleys had those bicycle pedal looking things on the kick starter.

My 73 is still in pieces, so I put the stock pipes and center stand back on my 74, took a guess at jetting changes and took her out for a ride.
Stock pipes sounds weird after chambers, but soo nice and smooth with more low down power that makes it great for driving in traffic.
I was thinking of selling her, but now I may just respray the spare tins I have and shine her up a bit.

Prepped the truck and trailer for a trip from Clinton, TN to Columbus, OH to get my next project and my first 2 stroke since '79. That was when I sold the '76 RD400 that I had bought new. Finally found one to restore. Not fully a basketcase, but in pretty sad shape. Over the past seven years I've been rescuing old GoldWings (and one CB750F) fairly successfully, but I'm certain that I will need knowledge from those who have traveled these paths before.

:vroom: rode it! We did 30 miles in Washington's Capitol forest, and my boys did well. In one of my now-famous low speed tipovers, I bent my OEM handlebars last week. Can you believe it? After only 21 years... I should file a warranty claim. Anyway, instead of trying to straighten them, I put on an old set of OEM Yamaha (Honda?) ATV bars that were lying around. I'm 6'3" and have always kinda thought taller bars would be more comfortable when standing, which I succeed in doing about 85% of the time.

They look pretty wonky, and feel a little weird when I get tired and sit down, but definitely great when I get up on the pegs where I belong. As a bonus, they have steel slugs welded in the ends that I had to drill and tap 5/16-16 for bark busters. They are absolutely bomb-proof now! I know, they're uneven and the left grip isn't safety wired yet... I was in a hurry, OK?

Rolled it into the garage (from the shed) to start on it! Sold the '78 GL1000 today, so it left enough space to actually work on the RD. Already have the masters stripped down and interiors cleaned, exterior will be cleaned of the loose paint tomorrow. Also fixed a broken tab on the bottom of the right side cover. Cleaned, glued with ABS cement, and then reinforced with fiberglass cloth worked in with ABS cement.

Lots of parts on order. gonna be a fun time!

Air cooled no more.

Fired her up for a quick test after giving her a heart transplant.
There is still a bit of work to finish the exhausts, carb tuning and find an air filter that will actually fit in the tiny gap between the back of the carbs and the frame.
But it was nice to hear her run after putting together a bunch of used parts. Especially the Dynatek CDI, Nology coil and Banshee stator that were bought off Facebook sites. Not much of a warranty option if parts are DOA.

I tried the long unis, but the bend in the frame is directly behind the carb so they dont fit. The intake is actually the internal crossover version, but I took that piece out to get more clearance. I have ordered smaller intakes, but delivery is very slow these days.
I should have cut out that piece of the frame and added in a new piece with some clearance and a new rear motor mount, but I wanted to leave the frame alone so that I can put the AC motor back if I want to. Even the rad mounts are bolt on.

Im thinking of trying one of the flat foam type filters made for Weber or Delorto 45 downdraft carbs

id be curious to hear what you find with that, but think it will restrict flow too much. Ive actually considered making something that went around the tube as well.

I feel your pain. this is as good as ive gotten it. ive even tried milled spacers at a slight angle to bring them in, the 250/350 frame just isn't suited for it. But it runs great otherwise.

On my KH400, I made intake runners from silicone turbo intercooler hose I got off ebay.  On the triple, I use one straight hose at the center, and 22* angle hoses on the outside to get all the filters inside the frame rails.  Worked great.

Some say  the increased intake runner length helps preserve some of the lowend that's lost when going pods instead of the airbox (Y boot theory).  I cannot confirm this, but my KH ran fantastic.

With smaller carbs that would work, but the TM34's are 2.25" diameter at the back, and there is only maybe 4 inches between the frame above the rear engine mount.
Thats why I started making a y boot to go straight back to a single filter. I may have to finish it, but it was very difficult to get on and off.

Oxy-acetylene or MIG Welding?  Looks like you did not use enough heat.
I have only tried pipe building using TIG, and have found that precise fit is critical.

And what software or method did you use for the cone templates?

I got another RD350 this weekend. It was the low-low price of free. It's in pretty rough shape. I didn't grab any photos of it. I should have. It has the orange color scheme. No title or keys, so it will probably be a part out. Once I get home I'll take some photos. it's sitting at my father's place for the time being. It has some welded seam hydro formed pipes that are totally rusted off, they were probably sweet at one point.

Welding with a MIG. The cones are 22 ga, if I crank up the heat it just blows holes like crazy.
I used Cone designer by Ezin Hobeki to make the curved cone templates. Cones were hand cut and cleaned up on a belt sander after rolling, but the fit was not 100% perfect. There was also quite a bit of trial and error involved which did not help. I tried first with making a paper pipe template but it was a bit flimsy and was driving me nuts, so I just went straight to production mode. Ill get around to some grinding and neatening up the pipes when the weather turns, but for now the pipes work great and the silencers I Made sound pretty good.

Welding that with TIG would have taken me forever

Finally made some progress on my rearset pegs with cable for the rear brake. Sort of TR350 inspired. Using 7 mm alloy angle for the cable stopper setup, and the muffler hanger will be 6 mm alloy plate, sandwiched between footpeg plate and frame, and at the same time acting as a spacer to avoid interference with the swing arm bolt. The footpeg plate also will prevent the swing arm bolt from sliding out, should the nuts come off. I had to fit the bolt from the RH side, to gain a little bit more clearance..

Today I just continued working on the rearset/ cable brake bracket. Finalized the shape and made a cable retainer out of some 20 mm alloy channel I had.

I have managed to F my neck up so I cannot lean my head back and my left arm hurts when I hold it out so riding my RD with club bars was out. I could not make it to the end of the block. It has been 5 weeks now so I had to take action. I ordered new bars from EC. I can now ride with only a little pain. I am not a fan of these bars at all. I dont like how it feels. More like riding a dirt bike but hay, I am riding it at lest...

id like to suggest stock rz bars.  i have wide bars like that on  the t500 and the naked concours. def better for bigger bikes IMHO

sorry about your neck, that blows.

Paul, that probably comes from your nuts being smashed into the tank and seat.  :dawg:

I had a set of these on the ducati. flat out best adjustable clipons, ever. smallest they make is 35mm but a .020 sheet of shim stock will put them spot on on an rd w 34mm forks. use brass shim to go with your gold theme maybe.  :toot: I can not recommend these enough if you decide to go clipon.

I agree.  I always push the levers and switchgear inboard as far as they will go without fouling on anything, then use the grips to measure and chop em off.

Plumbing tubing cutter ias the way to go.  Nice square cut with no burrs.

Mark,
the idea of the clip on intrigues me. I wonder if a rubber "bushing" can be located instead of metal shims. may reduce the vibrations a little.
I just went for a nice ride with the new bars. I can not 100% sure but the club bars may be about 80 lbs heaver because the front wheel sure seems a LOT lighter now. Power wheelies were fun. Now they are scary.

just fit bar weights, so do not use rubberized shims. i had these on a 1000cc aircooled ducati. lets talk about vibes...    with bar weights they were fine.

I was looking for a set of Moose intakes before. The UPP ones I have had in the past dont seem to last very long before cracking. I ended up with billet intakes. The Moose were not available at the time (stupid Covid strikes again) and the billet were almost the same price

Top quality s#it and the guy behin the counter said if I bring the jug back in he'll refill it for $40.  That's only $10 a qt/liter!

1st time in like 7 years that the bike has been put back together. I attempted to start it up for the first time since 1982, but had no luck. Did manage to spill about a gallon or so of gas from the petcock. I installed the rubber, then the ring, then the dial, then face plate. This was a mistake, the correct way I. Rubber, dial, ring over the dial, then face plate. This held the gas back.  Gosh, I can't believe I made that mistake.

At any rate, tomorrow I'll check the points, spark and try again.

Played with the LC jetting some more.

Got the #55 pilots in.  Ran it a bit with the airscrews at 1.5 out.

Then I wound the airscrews in to .5 out. Pulled off the line a bit better, but chugged and four stroked on the needles, so dropped the needles to #3 position.

That was Friday.

Rode my KTM in the snowy woods Saturday.  Was rainy soggy muddy down low, with about a foot of snow up higher.  Despite what you may think, dirtbikes suck in the snow.  Was a great day all around.  Did three loops, for about 25 miles total.

Rode the LC across the street (literally) to the gas station, then around the neighborhood a bit.

Still a bit fourstrokey on the needles.  Will open the airscrews a bit and see if that helps.

Upcoming weather not looking positive for motorcycless the next two weeks.  Highs in the 30's and lows in the 20's with snow in town.

Should be some good pow days up on the hill, tho.

After a quick shakedown on the R5, dragged the dusty 200 out of the shed.  It started right up so I took a lap around.   Need to finally fix a sheared bolt on the exhaust hanger....

All the talk about rubber fender washers and exhaust mounts got me to freshen up my exhaust mounts. Finally got her pulled from the back of the shed and went for a ride. Glorious little thing!

I put my new seat on my bike. I have been looking for almost 2 years before I settled on this one. I am very happy with it. Not sure what to do, paint it yellow with graphic to match, paint flat black to match fender, leave it. I am very happy with it. It looks great to me and almost exactly what I wanted. I only had to add my hinges and latch and it fit perfectly.

After 4(!) years I finally took the sheet off the RD and gave it some attention. I figured the carbs would look like crap but I must have used stabilizer or real gas because everything was still really clean. Because this is a Bitsa Daytona there's a bit of a mishmash of parts. I'm not sure if the airbox is 1A1 or 2V0 but in order to remove the carbs I have to disassemble the airbox in the frame in order to wiggle it out, I also have to loosen the electric plate under the RH side cover to make a little more room.

Since it's been years, I cleaned and synced the carbs, bled the brakes, flushed the gas tank and gave it a good overall cleaning of dust and cobwebs.

Of course its raining a little today so I'll hold off on firing it up.

Cleaned the rz's front caliper/piston system via ultrasonic cleaner for rebuilding.

Also, removed small rust patches on the frame and touched them up.  I decided not to paint the whole frame.

Yesterday, I took the other rz for a quick rip around the neighborhood.

Checked on the RD's fuel tank liner. Looks like I suspect it should. Four days to let POR15 cure. I think it's going to work though because there is a very small drip/bump that formed on the pinhole. Work on other bikes instead, and get ready for the big vintage show in Sevierville this weekend.

Walked out to the garage and pulled the tarp off the TDR.

The annual Portland Alley Sweeper ride is this Saturday.

Toss up between the KTM 300XCW or the TDR.  The 300 is way too easy to go way too fast thru the alleys, and the super gummy tire won't last long on the street.  The TDR will keep me out of most of the alleys, as the supersport tires are deadly in the grass an mud.  The ride's a bit of a shitshow these days anyway.  A victim of it's own popularity.

Finally replaced the intake manifolds, put on a clean air filter, checked the fluids, set tire pressures and fired it up. Sounds ready to rip!

Disconnected both fuel lines on the RD400c and joined them with a piece of 1/4" tubing (petcock is leaking - new one on order). Then drained the float bowls, put ~5ml 2T oil down each plug hole, put them back in loosely, and kicked and kicked. I'm fairly certain that I put fuel into the crank from a leaky float valve seat (loose - my uh-oh). So I'll patiently kick it over when I go past it. Had to put it in the shed again because I just got a text that my new Spyder will be delivered tomorrow!

I learned two things riding my RZ today: the part-throttle hesitation I experienced last fall WAS due to cracked intake manifolds, and my knee is OK with the rear-sets in the morning, but not so happy after a day of work. I tore the meniscus in my right knee in February, and apparently I'm ready for the stock footpegs again.

Took the RD out for a romp. It was a bit slow off idle. I hadn't changed anything since Deals Gap and it felt lean. 670 foot difference in elevation. Turned airscrews back to 1.5 and it ran great. Fun was had. The front wheel occasionally left the ground.

I've been playing with the airscrews on my RZ, too. Still just a touch rich at 1/4 throttle in the evening, but runs like a scalded cat on the way in to work (50-ish degrees in the mornings lately).
I sure hope my RD350's front wheel occasionally leaves the ground when it's done!
Today my lovely bride and I ventured North to the bustling metropolis of Tacoma, famous for giving us Bing Crosby, Steve Miller and, of course, Almond Roca. Picked up a donor front end for my RD project and I think bought a car from dgorms. Made plans to do a ride next Sunday and had a fine visit as well.

Discovered a fork seal leak on the RD400c. As a first attempt, used 35mm film to swipe under the seal lip in case there was something lodged in it (they are new and the tube is smooth/clean). Pumped it hard and didn't see any evidence of leakage so it will be like this for a show this Saturday, then ride it a  bit and check again. Oil was measured in carefully, so it was not over-filled. Might drain and refill next week to make sure it isn't too low (or al least take off the cap and measure).

Took the old, crispy, cracked Avon off the front and put on a new 2021 dated BT46 from eBay. Very satisfying.
The new 90/90-18 BT46 is significantly narrower than the 90/90-18 Avon. Photo has bad perspective but it's not too far off.
Did a weight comparo on the wheels - having lost the info from before.
HERE IT IS:
Spoked RD350 front wheel only with somewhat drilled rotor - 15.2 lbs.
Aluminum RD400 front wheel only with undrilled rotor - 18.8 lbs.
3.6 lbs weight savings
Would like to do that with the rear wheel someday...

Might be informative too look up what the Avon width should be. I had a GoldWing SEi with 15 year-old tires with the rear rubbing the swingarm. Replaced with new the same size (both Dunlops) and had plenty of clearance. Time and internal pressure had allowed it to swell ~1/2" beyond original width.

TDR 'guard has been in a box since I took it off the bike 23 years ago.  LC 'guard came off when I got the bike 3 or so years ago.

Gave it some fresh 50:1, filled the bar oil tank and greased the roller tip. Small tree fell over in the driveway and my lovely wife had me trim a big 'ol cedar away from the roof at Grandmas house. First contribution to the wood stove in the barn; Winter is Coming, and it's too cold out there without a fire.

My old $25 yard sale Poulan; recoil rope was broken, but it came with a new rope. Ran so well when I got it home I couldn't bring myself to adjust the carburetor. Bought it a new roller-tip bar and rim sprocket and a few chains (amazing how many new saw chains I find at yard sales) and it drinks from the KTM gas can.

I've had it for 10+ years now and it's never let me down. My father-in-law gave me his Stihl 029 Super when he quit cutting wood, and it's a nice saw: lighter, better chain speed, blah, blah. But I like my heavy old bile-green Poulan. And yes, of course it's a 2-stroke

Excellent Mark.
I replaced the too short mini harness I made on my RD for the turn signal flasher and subsequently the flasher after it still failed to flash due to a bad terminal in the flasher unit. Pulled the tank, re-routed the flasher unit wiring away from the throttle cables and installed the new sub harness. All appears to be well.

I freaked a little when I saw my cost for an EBC disc and cancelled the order, then found this on eBay for $50 less. Stainless, floating like the OEM...but actually heavier! OEM=62.29 oz, Tour Max=63.88 oz. I'm gonna need some ti bolts to offset that ounce and a half  :omg:

Vintage motorcycle show at Honda Yamaha Suzuki of Knoxville. Huge turn-out of great old machines (including lots of RDs) and spectators. Beautiful weather, beautiful machines, good hamburgers (I don't usually like frozen patty burgers, but these were good!) I rode my cafe '78 GL1000 in and the daughter drove the pickup pulling the trailer with Yamaha RD400c, so we could show two bikes. Best of show was a 1946 HD flathead that is immaculate. I suspect Marlon will have it at our church's show this Saturday, too.

I am currently a mechanic at a friends shop. A few days ago I interviewed with a boiler company for a project controls role (have 16 years of industrial construction experience) and I have not told my buddy/boss. I won't tell him until it's too late.
He's been fucking up lately and doing stupid shit. Today I decided that I am taking EVERYTHING I have at the shop I am currently working on that relates to my cafe racer build and am taking it home and putting it in the garage to work on there, instead of at the shop. I intend to also remove all of my tools and equipment I have at the shop in the next few days. Surprise, you should have paid me instead of shorting my checks.

People often forget that extreme things happen when people are pushed to the extreme.

Did a trackday Saturday at the local kart/supermoto track.

Brought the LC and TDR. TDR was brilliant as always, but the sloppy trans linkage made the session on the LC and the missed downshifts at the end of the front straight a truly frightening experience

Had a go on a friends KTM 690SMCR and have decided I need one in my garage.

LC for sale soon!

The wheels needed to come off of my RD400c to get the black paint off that some PO had put on them (poorly). I stacked 2" thck lumber on a furniture dolly and strapped the bike too the dolly with a ratchet strap, then removed the wheels. Makes the bike nice and portable for moving around to make room for a 1972 T150V that I plan to pick up tomorrow. Hope to find someone to vapor blast the wheels to remove the paint.

It wasn't so much "to" as "for" my two-stroke. Since I don't have enough to keep me occupied in my spare (?) time, I am upgrading or at least changing the wheels and suspension of my RZ350, this:

I am adding this:

And the wheels, front brakes and forks from this:

Anyway, I took the rear wheel off of the CBR this morning to get a better idea of just what a debacle I've taken on and found this little arrangement:

Got two garage days this week.

*HAD* to sort stuff for spring startups before the Guzzi arrived and sidetracked me.
- Drained fuel from both two strokes.  Replaced with fresh 93.
- Charged both
- Washed 200, the cover was off for some time this winter in the shed and it was pretty dirty.
- Like a Swiss watch, the 200 just works.
- Changed R5 fork oil due to uncertainty of level after a leak.
- Disassembled R5 carbs to sort out leaky float needle (again).  Took Marks advice and used the clips to hold it in place on the float arms.  Found one wildly out of the 15mm spec.  Seems good now, no current overflow.
- R5 only running on one cylinder after carby work.
- disassembled RS carb.  Nothing really wrong, reinstalled.
- cleaned oily Irridium, trying to save $20.  Of course bike running good now, ie "no trouble found" after an hour of fiddling.
- Still have low speed surge problem, will mess with air screws one of these days.
- Need to repolish some aluminum after using wrong cleaner on it last fall.
- then I fully detailed new Guzzi, polished aluminum rims, waxed paint, cleaned chrome....

Spent a bit of time with my TDR this weekend.

Replaced the nose fairing and windscreen, and did a spring carb cleaning.

I rode it about a month ago for our annual "Alley Sweeper" ride, and boy it ran like shit.  I pulled the carbs off and ran eveything thru the ultrasonic, cleaned the air filter foam, etc.  I did a Zeel CDI last year, and leaned the jetting a bit, and HOLY SHIT ... I forgot how hard this thing rips.

With Wade's guidance, I replaced the carb on my 20yo Craftsman chainsaw, then used it to battle a stump in my backyard.

The chainsaw had sat for probably 15 years, and the gas lines were fried. Once I replaced those (not easy), it still wouldn't run. Wade hipped me to the fact the fuel pump (?) diaphragm in the carb was probably fried too, so I ordered a new "genuine" Walbro carb off eBay.  Looks like Wade knows his sh!t, coz when I installed the new mixer, I found the crankcase was hydrolocked and full of fuel, also pointing to a failed diaphragm .

Once I pulled the plug, pumped it clear, and let it dry out, it fired up and ran like a champ.

I ended up attacking the remains of the stump with a maul and wedge.  Thankfully, the Stump Remover enzyme crystals (epsom salt) I hit it with last fall seem to have done their job, and I (with much effort, sweat and swearing) now have a hole in the ground instead of a stump.

I have a Eucalyptus Mitchelliana sapling to go in the hole, but thankfully won't need any more 2T power to complete the job.

...also, I did all this while wearing a 20yo Moto Carrera t-shirt, so there's that, too.

Pumper carbs will do some weird stuff when the diaphragm isn't working correctly. The best is that sometimes the diaphragm looks perfectly fine. Then you gotta stretch springs and set popoffs and what not, it's a bit of black art. Buying a new carb was probably the easiest way to go.

I have to look into those crystals. I have a few small stumps on my property that I tried to burn out and gave up before they were even below ground level. It just didn't work very well.
Title: Re: What did you do to your 2T today?
Post by: pdxjim on August 23, 2022, 12:23:34 AM
Yeah, rebuilding the fiddly bits of the carb was a nogo for me, since a new carb was only $35. I could have opted for a less than genuine carb for like $12, but thankfully Wade steered me clear of that bad decision.

I'm pretty sure the stump remover crystals are just epsom salt.

Last Fall, I drilled a bunch of holes in the stump with a Hole Hawg and a long ship auger bit and filled them with hardware store "stump remover".  Like you, a couple weeks ago, I doused the stump is gasoline and built a fire over it with little to no effect.  Thankfully the portion of the stump below grade was significantly rotted, and it busted up pretty easy once I got my method down.

I will likely order a replacement glass as they are still available from CRG.

It was a bit odd to install as you have to hold all the pieces together while tightening the part that goes up against the inside of the bar and slide it in just shy of it being too big to go into the bar and then continue to tighten. There was no screw to turn you turn the whole stem. Eventually I figured it out.

Flogged her good on Thanksgiving Day.  This bike LOVES cold air.  It proceeded to spit gas on the garage floor when I parked it...

The RZV is up on the table for some exploratory surgery

"Exploratory surgery" never sounds good! I hope it's nothing more serious than a missing sparking bolt.

nothing terribly exciting, resurfaced bowls on t500.. they were indeed a bit warped,  drilled screw holes out to 4.5mm (lets bowl align a bit better))and chamfered edges of holes. also added a double gasket as they would seep a bit when on sidestand.. super annoying leaving that brown fuel stain.  cleaned up intake hardware to stainless studs as well. just.. maintenance.

Layed up the R5 in the shed to make way for the.....snowblower in the garage.  It did remind me though that it's leaking fuel when the petcock is on.  Petcock, floats, dunno and won't until spring.

Yea that's not happening.  At least the bikes in the shed are covered and mouse baits set.
Beside the snowblower I need room to work on the RD200 in the garage.  More on that when I bring it in...

Swapped the RD200 into the shed and pulled the R5 into the garage to make some fixes.

1) Tach is making a new noise.
2) Gas leaking which of course means repaint the chambers but that's ok.  Found the bowl nut on the left side less than finger tight lol and that was the leak.  Good thing my wife likes the smell of gasoline.
3) Pulled pipes off for stripping and repaint.
4) Scheduled a gear oil change while the pipes are off.
5) Chance for a good cleaning of the underside, it's pretty greasy under there.
6) Fixed a throttle problem, the grip had crept over and was binding a bit on the housing.  Grips feel pretty gross and sticky, they are a few years old so I'll be looking at options.

You guys south of me riding this week got me motivated to get maintenance done.
